In late August, we had our
Annual Pizza Inn Fundraiser.
The center was able to make a
grand total of $583. We
appreciate your continued
support to the GMHSC and
Partners Inc.
On October 22nd, the GMHSC had our Annual Fall Festival. We were
scheduled to host the event outside, but mother nature got in the way
again. This year, our Seniors really showed up and showed out. We had
games such as the cake walk, bobbing for apples, and corn hole toss.
There was also live music from the group “Rockreation”, vendors and
even a few treats. The costume contest was won for the 3rd year in a row
by Bette Hamilton, who came as “50 shades of Gray”. We hope to see
you again next year. You don’t want to miss it!
Congratulations to Ms. Mary Brewer, who is the winner of the Annual Quilt
Raffle, sponsored by the GMHSC Partners, Inc. group. The beautiful quilt was
handmade by Pat Carlson, a member of the Pamlico River Quilt Guild.
Proceeds from the raffle will be used to support GMHSC programs and fitness
center equipment upgrades. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket and
congratulations again to Mary on your awesome win!
100 years ago a great event took place in
Attleboro, MA. Harlan MacKendrick was
born on January 18th, 1920. The Roaring 20's was beginning and
that's the world little Harlan was born into. He was happily married to
Edith for 73 years before she passed four years ago. They had two
children, a son Robert, who lives in MA and a daughter Linda who
lives here. Harlan enlisted in the Army after Pearl Harbor. Harlan did
his Officer Candidate School in Providence, RI. He served for 13
years and is a WWII veteran. Harlan and his family moved to NC in
1948. The first moved to Williamston and then Washington. They
were instrumental in starting the men's Zion Shelter where Harlan
volunteered for 35-40 years. Harlan is a very active senior. He lives
independently with his dog Maggie, who gets him out to the dog park
daily. When his dog Maggie isn’t keeping him busy he is very active
at the Sr. Center There is no way to adequately cover 100 years in a
short overview Stop, talk and ask Harlan about his amazing life.
The GMHSC will be closed December
19th and 20th for floor replacement in
the lobby and downstairs hallway. There
will be NO ACTIVITIES during this
time. We will reopen on December 23rd.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
The River Readers Book Club (RRBC) will be celebrating seven years at the GMH Senior Center on
January 23, 2019. All are welcome to participate and anyone can recommend a book and facilitate
the discussion. We've read a variety of authors from Bill O'Reilly to Jane Eyre, fiction, non-fiction,
biographies and classics. Each month, there is a lively discussion, then grading of the books from 1-
10. Honestly, we have had some zeros. We are a diverse group of seniors with many opinions and
we sure laugh a lot. If you are a reader, please come join us on the fourth Wednesday of each
month from 3-4:30pm at the GMHSC. We'd love to meet you and have you become a part of RRBC.
If you need additional information please call the Senior Center or Chris Hall, 252-702-0403.

“Jingle Bells” was written for Thanks-
giving, not Christmas
The first artificial Christmas Tree was-
n’t a tree at all. It was created out of
goose feathers that were dyed green
 Brenda Lee recorded “Rockin’ Around
the Christmas Tree” when she was only
13 years old.
The Statue of Liberty was gifted to the
US by the French on Christmas day in
1886.
We’d like to introduce
our newest volunteer of
the month, Diana Robb!
Diana is originally from
Kane, Pennsylvania. She
moved to Washington,
NC in 1998 because her
husband had a boatyard
at in Belhaven, NC. She volunteers at the
Senior Center because she likes to give back to
the community and interacting with everyone.
Diana has been a member of the GMHSC for
almost 15 years and says her favorite job is to
be the front desk receptionist. We thank
Diana for being a wonderful volunteer and
supporting the mission of the GMH Senior
Center.
