Reflecting on God’s Word A CLASSIC IMAGE When we think of today’s Gospel, the image of this meeting between the Angel Gabriel and Mary by Fra Angelico (1440–1445) likely comes to mind. In this fresco, Gabriel and Mary are outside sitting among the columns, and Gabriel, with his big wings and hands crossed, gazes upon Mary and gestures towards her. She is well dressed in a traditional blue garment, and though her face shows shock, her folded hands model submission and humility. This work of art is so beautifully executed that we can miss some of its finer details. Similarly, because the Gospel scene is so familiar, we can forget to take in its small details. A few years ago, this author found a children’s book called “The Nativity” illustrated by Julie Vivas. Because her drawings were so fresh and charming and simple, she invited new perspective on the story.
LOOKING AGAIN Luke says that Mary “was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.” She asks, “How can this be?” These questions don’t fit with how Fra Angelico positioned Gabriel and Mary. In the Vivas illustrations, the Angel Gabriel sits down with battered wings and a balding head and has a cup of coffee with Mary as the two of them try to figure it out together. The text is the same, but the message conveyed is different. There is a different degree of comfort and familiarity to these illustrations.
This “having a cup of coffee” is something we need to learn to do with the scriptures and with our lives. After this event, pregnant Mary traveled into the hill country to be with Elizabeth; an older, wiser, mentor—a mother figure. She spent three months there reflecting and preparing for the birth of her child. In this final week of Advent, take a few moments to find a Gabriel/Mary or an Elizabeth/Mary moment and read the Christmas readings again to see what you might have overlooked, and to find a new way for Christ to dwell in you. Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios UNA IMAGEN CLÁSICA Cuando pensamos en el Evangelio de hoy, probablemente podemos imaginar la pintura de esta reunión entre el ángel Gabriel y María que hizo Fra Angelico (1440-1445). En ese fresco, Gabriel y María están afuera y sentados en medio de las columnas, y Gabriel, con sus grandes alas y manos cruzadas, contemplando a María y haciendo gestos hacia ella. Ella está bien vestida en un ropaje tradicional de color azul y aunque su rostro muestra conmoción, sus manos cruzadas modelan sumisión y humildad. Esta obra de arte está tan bellamente ejecutada que podemos desapercibir algunos de sus más finos detalles. Del mismo modo, porque la escena del Evangelio es tan familiar, podemos olvidarnos de los pequeños detalles. Debido a que sus dibujos eran tan frescos, encantadores y simples, convidaba una perspectiva nueva en la historia.
VOLVER A MIRAR Lucas dice que María “estaba muy preocupada por lo que se le dijo y se preguntaba que tipo de saludo podría ser ese”. Ella preguntó: “¿cómo puede ser esto posible?” Estas preguntas no concuerdan como Fra Angelico puso a Gabriel y María. En las ilustraciones de Vivas, el ángel Gabriel sentado con las alas maltratadas, cabeza calva, está tomando una taza de café con María mientras los dos juntos tratan de resolverlo. El texto es el mismo, pero el mensaje transmitido es diferente. Hay un grado diferente de comodidad y familiaridad en estas ilustraciones.
Este “tomando café” es algo que tenemos que aprender a hacer con las escrituras y con nuestras vidas. Después de este evento, María embarazada viajó a las colinas para estar con Isabel, una mentora sabia y anciana, la figura de una madre. Ella pasó tres meses ahí reflexionando y preparándose para el nacimiento de su hijo. En esta última semana de Adviento, dedica unos momentos para encontrar un momento Gabriel y María o momento Elizabeth y María y lee las lecturas de Navidad de nuevo para ver lo que podrías haber pasado por alto, y para encontrar una nueva forma de que Cristo habite en ti.

End of Year Giving and the 2020 CARES Act
Some of you may be looking to close out the calendar year by making a charitable contribution. I pray you consider St Cyril when you do. The CARES Act has changed some of the requirements for this year's giving.

DSF-2020 -- Closing the Gap! Diocesan Services Fund for 2020
It’s been a while since we talked about the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF), but we’re
coming to the end of the year and we have to. Our 2020 DSF Campaign started great – until COVID-19 hit and everything changed.
For many of us our sources of income diminished, or stopped. Bills at St. Cyril continued to arrive, like all the rest of us, but our source of income dropped seriously. Like many other families and churches we had to focus on bringing in enough money to be able to do the fundamental work of our St. Cyril parish: Mass,
Confessions, Passing on the Faith, Upkeep of our Building, etc.
Our own parish needs have not changed or diminished as we approach the end of the year. But we also, as a parish, have an obligation to the larger church, our Archdiocese. Each year we address that need through
our contributions to the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF). DSF supports more than 60 ministries and programs that serve the faithful of the Archdiocese and us too, here at St. Cyril
This year, Cardinal DiNardo has assessed our parish DSF Goal at $177,000. So far you have contributed $108,045 towards this goal – Thank You!!Thank You!!Thank You!!!!!
We still have $68,955 to raise.
I know that we are in difficult economic times, and we have been challenged to give in all kinds of ways, yet each of us has been blessed in so many ways, and we are called to share those blessings with others. We
missed our DSF goal for 2019 by approximately $17,000, which we had to pay out of our operating budget.
This year we need the help of everyone so let’s pray and then give, in order to Close the GapClose the GapClose the Gap.

DSF-2020 -- ¡Reducir la diferencia! Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos - 2020
Hace un tiempo hablamos sobre el Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos (DSF), pero como nos
estamos acercando al final del año, tenemos que hablar de nuevo. Nuestra campaña DSF 2020 inicio muy bien, hasta que llegó el COVID-19 y todo cambió.
Para muchos de nosotros, las fuentes de ingresos disminuyeron o se detuvieron. Las facturas en San Cirilo siguieron llegando y nuestra fuente de ingresos se redujo seriamente. Como muchas de las familias e iglesias,
tuvimos que enfocarnos en obtener el dinero suficiente para poder llevar a cabo el trabajo primordial de nuestra parroquia de San Cirilo: como la misa, confesiones, transmisión de la fe, mantenimiento de nuestro edificio, etc.
A medida que nos acercamos al final del año, las necesidades parroquiales no han cambiado ni disminuido. Como parroquia, también tenemos una obligación con la iglesia en nuestra Arquidiócesis. Cada año abordamos esta necesidad a través de nuestras contribuciones al Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos (DSF). DSF apoya a más de 60
Ministerios y Programas que sirven a los fieles de la Arquidiócesis y también a los de nuestra parroquia San Cirilo.
Este año, el Cardenal Di Nardo ha evaluado nuestra meta parroquial de DSF en $ 177,000. Hasta el momento hemos contribuido con $ 108,045 - ¡¡¡Muchas Gracias!!!
Al momento tenemos que recaudar el balance de $ 68,955.
Sabemos que todos estamos atravesando tiempos económicos difíciles y que dar de muchas maneras ha sido un desafío; sin embargo, cada uno de nosotros hemos sido bendecidos de muchas maneras y estamos

QUÉ SIGNIFICA EL CARES ACT PARA DAR CARIDADES
La Ley de Ayuda, Alivio y Seguridad Económica por el Coronavirus ha creado cambios temporales en el procedimiento fiscal de tales donaciones. Una de ellas es una deducción estándar general de 90 +% dirigida principalmente a los contribuyentes , y las otras restantes están destinadas a incentivar a los
donadores corporativos de altos ingresos.
9 de cada 10 personas que ya no detallan específicamente sus donaciones caritativas, CARES Act les permitirá a estos contribuyentes individuales a deducir sus donaciones a organizaciones benéficas hasta $300 en su reporte de impuestos federales del 2020, a pesar que se toman la deducción estándar. Los contribuyentes casados que presenten una declaración conjunta obtendrán una deducción de hasta $ 600.
Para aquellos donantes que aun pueden detallar sus deducciones y que por lo tanto, pueden contribuir directamente con donaciones a obras de caridad, el límite de su deducción actual es del 60% del ingreso ajustado. Las corporaciones pueden deducir donaciones caritativas hasta el 10% de su reporte de ingresos.

WHAT THE CARES ACTS MEANS FOR CHARITABLE GIVING
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act creates two temporary changes to the tax treatment of such donations. One is a universal
deduction targeted primarily at the 90+% of standard deduction taxpayers, and the other is
meant to incentivize the remaining high-income givers and corporations.
For the 9 out of 10 people who no longer itemize their charitable giving, the CARES Act will allow these individual taxpayers to deduct donations to charity of up to $300 on their 2020 federal tax return, even though they take the standard deduction. Married-filing-jointly taxpayers will get an above-the-line deduction of up to $600. For those donors who are still able to itemize their deductions, and therefore directly write off gifts to charity, the current deduction cap is 60% of adjusted gross income. Corporations are able to deduct charitable donations up to 10% of taxable income. *The 60% of AGI limit is for giving to 501(c)(3) public charities. The deductibility of gifts to 501(c)(3) private foundations is capped at 30% and was not included in this legislation.
What about IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)?
The CARES Act did not change the rules around the QCD, which allows individuals over 70½ years old to donate up
to $100,000 in IRA assets directly to charity1 annually, without taking the distribution into taxable income.
However, remember that under the CARES Act an individual can elect to deduct 100 percent of their AGI for
cash charitable contributions. This effectively affords individuals over 59½ years old the benefits similar to a QCD; they can take a cash distribution from their IRA,
contribute the cash to charity, and may completely offset tax attributable to the distribution by taking a charitable
deduction in an amount up to 100 percent of their AGI for the tax year.
