Once again the Community Chest is requesting donations for

distribution to various charities. This eliminates the necessity for these

charities to canvas door to door. Donations can be left at the Stavely

ATB Financial Agency or mailed to Community Chest, Box 249,

Stavely. We feel that a minimum of $2.00 per organization donation is

not unreasonable.

In 2016 the Community Chest contributed to the following charities:

• Stavely & District Community Emergency Fund

• St. John’s Ambulance

• Canadian Cancer Society

• Heart & Stroke Foundation

• Canadian Mental Health

• The Arthritis Society

• The Salvation Army

• Alberta Children’s Hospital

• The Kidney Foundation

• Canadian Diabetes Association

• Claresholm & District Health Foundation

• Alberta Lung Association

• STARS

• ALS

• War Amps

• The Alzheimer’s Society

• Parkinson Disease Society

• C.N.I.B.

• Juvenile Diabetes

We wish to let you know that the books of the Stavely & District

Community Chest are open to your inspection at any time. Should you

wish to see them, please contact any member of the Executive.

Your response in the past has been good and we look forward to your

continued support this year. Please give what you think is right and

many thanks. Income tax receipts will be issued for all contributions.

Library News

BOOK CLUB

This month’s book was called “Room” by Emma Donoghue. We had our

December meeting early on November 24th and handed out our next read for

December called “A Painted House” by John Grisham. A historical fiction from

which Grisham drew from his personal experiences growing up in rural

Arkansas. This is a heart-wrenching story of an impoverished farming

community. It’s got it all, destitute share-croppers, migrant farm workers, a

sweet young boy who lives for baseball, a devastating flood and a mentally

unhinged murderer thrown in for good measure. Please feel free to come by

the Library to pick up your copy—everyone is welcome to participate and we

welcome suggestions for future book club reads. We will be meeting to

discuss this book on Thursday, January 5th at 7:00 pm in the Library.

Flipster—a new free digital access to popular current magazines through a

subscription, courtesy of your Library. Magazines can be downloaded to

desktop computers, Android™ and Apple® phones and tablets, and also

Kindle Fire mobile devices for offline reading anytime, anywhere. Flipster

focuses on providing access to current issues, though it also provides access

to back issues for many magazines. There is no limit on how many magazines

can be read or downloaded. There are likewise no “holds” and there is no

waiting to get a copy. When you download a title to a mobile device, an

expiration period may apply—2 day expiration may apply for some weekly

publications and 7 day expiration may apply for some monthly or seasonal

titles. You can always re-download an expired title, though, if you wish to

continue reading. All other downloaded titles will remain on your device until

you choose to delete them. Links to the app downloads here http://

FEATURED BOOKS OF THE MONTH

• The Whistler (The Whistler #1) by John Grisham. This is the story of

two judicial investigators and the most corrupt judge in US history, who

seems to be making some illegal money in the Native American casino

business. A well written fast moving story with plenty of suspense.

• This Was a Man (The Clifton Chronicles #7) by Jeffrey Archer. A

captivating final installment of the Clifton Chronicles, a series of seven

novels that has topped the bestseller lists around the world. Basically,

the series follows the Barrington and Clifton families in England and

Scotland over a span of 100 years. Among the shocking discoveries, of

which there are plenty, is the emergence of a secret will that’ll change

one character’s life forever. Beyond that, Archer dials up the family

drama with betrayal, secrets and several delicious twists that end on a

touching satisfying note.

• The German Girl by Armando Lucas Correa. This is a debut novel that

revolves around the lives of two little girls, Hannah and Anna, over a

period of 70 years. A story of a twelve-year old girl’s harrowing

experience fleeing Nazi-occupied Germany with her family and best

friend, only to discover that the overseas asylum they had been promised

is an illusion. This story is told in parallel with a present day story of a girl

(Anna) who lives in New York City that receives a mysterious envelope

from her great-aunt Hannah.

NEW DVD’S

• The Jungle Book—The Jungle Book is a live-action remake of the 1967

Disney animated film. The computer-generated effects are extraordinary,

the jungle and it’s menagerie of beasts and critters look positively lifelike.

The Jungle Book is a great visual experience, a great story, and a great

movie.

The Library will be closed December 23rd to 27th and December 30th to

January 2nd.

Stavely Museum News

The Stavely Museum held it’s annual meeting on November 22nd with

12 people in attendance. Updates were provided on our ongoing

projects. Work continues on the re-organization of exhibits and

displays. Work has also begun on the outside murals. So far, seven

volunteer artists have committed to 8 murals. We have supplies for 2

more volunteers if anyone is interested. Linda Emann, chairman of the

United Church Board, presented a proposal to the Museum on behalf

of the Stavely congregation. The Museum has agreed to purchase the

church building, contents and assets for $1.00. This agreement

requires final approval from Foothills Presbytery at it’s January

meeting. The Museum’s mandate is to maintain the building and

especially the sanctuary for community use if the need arises. Brydon

Saunders agreed to join the Board of Directors, replacing Bev Stacey.

Our thanks to Bev for her years of Museum service, as a board

member, hostess and volunteer. The Museum is scheduled for it’s

next casino on June 28th & 29th, 2017. If you could help on either of

these dates please let us know. Thank you to the Stavely Rebekahs

for their generous donation of $500.00. Remember, the Museum as a

charitable organization and can issue tax receipts for any donation.

Please help if you can.
