ADVENT REFLECTIONS 2018
Week 2 - December 9
Rise Up to Glory…Prepare the Way! Events often leave us confused and dismayed. We are overwhelmed by what we didn't anticipate and can't understand in the ups and downs, the hills and valleys, of life. Today John the Baptist reminds us that there is no reason to be distraught; "Look up, turn around," John says, "Welcome new opportunities and new possibilities!" This Week: Recall a time in your life when change brought unexpected -- and maybe even unwelcome -- results that became in time a blessing from God. Remind yourself that the mystery of Christmas escapes us if we are
unwilling to accept something new and unexpected.

Page 5 PASTOR’S MESSAGE
We are definitely in a new liturgical year (year C). Mostly
St Luke will be the one who will teach us about Jesus’
mystery throughout this year. At the same time today is
the first day of Advent, a time of joyful hope, a time of a
new beginning, the time of deliverance approaching, the
time of desire. Advent is all that because it announces
the coming of what will be the maturity and salvific full-
ness that God wants for humanity. Because of that, the
readings emphasize the aspect of “conversion.” We
should prepare our heart so that Jesus can be born in it.
Last Sunday, Jesus warned us with catastrophic images.
Why? Apart from being taken literally, the apocalyptic
images are a way to say that God is the Alpha and the
Omega, he is the Master. Jesus wants to wake us up tell-
ing us that this life doesn’t last forever. It is an opportu-
nity to enact changes in our lives. People don’t like
change; they can get very upset when they have to
change something. They will even say: there is no good
or bad, there are only differences. It is a nice argument
to justify anything and everything. No, in life there is right
and wrong because of the simple fact that human life is
morally structured. Sometimes we should be ready to
make serious changes in order to put things right. The
destruction of Jerusalem and its temple is a frightening
event, but yet it is the sign that Jesus comes on the
clouds. What about that?...The upsetting events Jesus
talked about, far from the end of everything, are just the
beginning of another world, the announcement of a
meeting with God. For instance, far from being the aboli-
tion of history, the catastrophe of Jesus' death is the real
starting point of a new story. So don’t be afraid to make
change in your life. Changes are good when we under-
take them with the purpose of becoming closer to God.
The unpredictable suddenness of death should lead us
to be smart; we cannot live as if there were nothing after
we die. Heaven must start here in our daily life. In the
gospel Jesus reminds us to be vigilant; by these words he
tells us that every day is the day of his coming. It is not
enough to just do what we consider the politically correct;
rather, as St Paul said, it is more important for us to
strengthen our hearts and to be blameless in holiness
before God. So, let’s take advantage of this Advent to
ask ourselves: How am I living my life? What do I need to
change or improve in my life? Our salvation is at hand,
Jesus said; do I feel prepared to stand before him? Every
year we celebrate Advent, what trace does this encounter
with Jesus leave in your life? Do we let God be God in our
lives, or do we try to adjust our ways of living? While
thinking about the answers, let’s pray that this prepara-
tion will lead us to put aside the works of darkness and
make us increase and abound in love for one another
and for all. Our Lady Queen of Peace…pray for us!
