John DiSantis Wins PBA East Region

Knob Hill Senior OpenBy Russ Mills - PBA

    LAS VEGAS Bill ONeill of

Langhorne, Pa., completed a dramatic per-

formance to win his fourth ProfessionalBowlers Association Tour title in the Alka

    Seltzer Plus Cold Cheetah Championship,

the opening tournament in the 2012-13

PBA Tour season, at South Point Hotel

    and Casino.

ONeill, who won his last title in the

    2010 Pepsi Viper Championship, started

the title match with seven strikes and

cruised to a 243-192 victory over top qual-

ifier Mike Wolfe of New Albany, Ind.

The title match concluded an uphill bat-

tle that began when ONeill barely made it

into the Round of 16 in 16th place by two

pins. After sneaking into the Round of 16, he advanced 12

positions to qualify fourth for the four-man stepladder finals

    by 28 pins.

In the stepladder finals, ONeill eliminated Chris

Loschetter of Avon, Ohio, 248-223, and Jeff Roche of

Dearborn, Mich., 246-177, to advance to the title match

where he raced to an easy victory over Wolfe.

The Cheetah Championship finals, conducted as part of

    the GEICO PBA World

    Series of Bowling IV, aired

    on ESPN.I was definitely confi-

    dent today, ONeill said.

I wanted to get off to a

good start. I knew what I

needed to do. I had to stay

    mentally right and keep

    focused on my game, and

    make sure I wasnt throw-

    ing errant shots.

    In his opening match,

    Loschetter started with five

    strikes before leaving a 10

    pin and missing the spare.

ONeill answered with a string of six strikes after convert-

ing a single-pin spare in his first frame, taking a 23-pin lead

after seven frames which Loschetter couldnt overcome.

He had an easier time against Roche, who missed three

spare attempts in the first five frames of his national televi-

sion debut. ONeill led by only 11 pins after four frames,

but started a string of eight strikes in the fifth frame and ran

    away with the victory.

When Jeff started off slow, I got a little complacent an

I almost threw one shot in the gutter, ONeill said, but

made the spare, and took a deep breath, and tried not to looahead to the championship match.

Winning again was definitely important. After not ma

ing any TV shows last season, I just wanted to bowl well.

wanted to compete again, and be in the hunt to mak

shows, ONeill added. I made a lot of top 10s last seaso

but I never even threatened for a show. Thats what I wan

ed to do coming into the World Series. I worked really ha

on my game over the summer and its paying off.

In the title match, ONeill admitted thoughts of bowling

nationally-televised 300 games began dancing in his hea

after building a big lead with seven strikes to start the con

test. Wolfe, who didnt throw consecutive strikes until th

seventh and eighth frames, was all but eliminated after s

    frames.

When I got the strike in the seventh frame, I knew I ju

needed one more mark to lock up the title, he said. I g

to thinking it would be really cool to shoot 300, becaus

Tony Reyes bowled 300 for his first title on this lane cond

tion, and that was kind of going through my mind. I got

little jittery in the eighth and threw it a little quick, and le

    the 2-8-10. Thats what happened.

SPARE SHOTSBy Bill Vint - PBA

    You can't be more amazed

than when you spend some time

    with todays younger genera-

    tions.

    Whether it is them displaying

    their flying fingers on comput-

ers, their flying feet in gymnas-

tics or their rolling the ball and

    making parents and grandpar-

ents take a good second look at

    their talent, mentally and physi-

    cally.

All sports and all fields have

    their child prodigies. There

    have been teenagers in every

major sport, and many in their

    early teens, particularly in

    swimming and tennis.

Many of them have been great

or gone on to greatness, at great

    sacrifice, being forced to grow

up too quickly, being forced to

    choose between fame and for-

tune early, or after a suitable

    stretch of education.

In the dream world it would

    be wonderful if every young

    athlete in every sport was

forced to obtain a high school

    education at a minimum, and

    college or other advanced train-

    ing as a recommended path.

    But the real world doesn't

    work out so neatly.

    Some really young baseball,

    basketball, tennis and hockey

phenoms can and do make mil-

lions of dollars before they can

legally drink or vote. How and

when do you tell them they are

    too young or too unprepared?

At 17 they can be accepted into

the armed services and put their

    lives on the line.

    So how can you realistically

    ask any youngster talented way

beyond their years to put a hold

    on opportunities and riches that

may not be there later. In many cases it is boys

    against men, and girls against

women. But boys grow up fast

    these days and women aren

nearly as mere as they used t

    be.

    Bowlers are amazingly adep

at early ages. You can visit an

    junior program and see obviou

talent. But, at 15 many bowle

have been bowling for a decad

and bowling at pro class calibr

for years. By the time they ar

    ready for college, many ar

ready for a shot at the pro tour

    or the big money tournaments

    Look at the Mark Roth

    Johnny Petraglias and Pe

Webers and a list of thousand

and you could see super stars i

the making at ages of 17 o

    younger.

    Junior bowlers can't b

reminded too often that a 20

game is fine, but an "A" in an

    subject is better. A tournamen

win is terrific, but the Hono

Roll is more terrific. A 30

game or even a 900 series

great, but a diploma is th

    greatest.

In bowling there is no reaso

    why both areas cannot b

    encouraged. A high school o

    college student can utilize h

time so much can be spent o

bowling and much can be spen

on study. And students can ma

out a schedule that covers bot

sides, and gives them the best

    both worlds.

    Parents, bowling coaches an

bowling officials have a duty t

    counsel young bowlers and n

to put too much pressure o

them in either way, except to u

    common sense.

    Education should alway

come first, but bowling is a

    education too, if used wisel

    whether you're a shooting sta

or a struggler. But always hit the books a

hard as you hit the pins.
