Looking back over the past twelve months and I can’t believe how much UBI Global has grown — as a community and as a team. Thankfully, we have a new article on all the activities that took place both within our community and in the world of innovation itself. Read more in this edition of UBI Engage!
This month, we bid a warm welcome to 17 new member programs located in Argentina, Australia, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Pakistan, South Africa, Sweden, and the United States. We shine the Member Spotlight on entrepreneurship@UBC within The University of British Colombia and its startups Acuva and CarboNet, two health-tech powerhouses that will continue to impact the global innovation landscape.
UBI Global has our own announcement in the form of a new leader, Fredrik Grufvisare as the new CEO. You’ve read that correctly — the organization has evolved so much over the years that the leadership role simply had to expand and evolve. It was clear to me that my passion for UBI Global lies in interacting closely with members, partners, and friends we have gathered over the years, and my role will continue along those lines.
Thank you for your innovation and inspirationin 2019 — bring on 2020!

Welcome! Meet Fredrik Grufvisare, CEO — UBI GlobalUBI GLOBAL NEWS
Sometimes life takes an unexpected turn. For some, change is a light-bulb moment; for me, it was a casual conversation in an empty auditorium.
Contribute your story at page 12 / 15The Monthly Member Magazine, December 2019
It started with a conversation...
I have always thought of myself as a mix between an entre-preneur and an intrapreneur. My time at university was spent studying economics and entrepreneurship, but I never started my own company. Instead, early on I began looking to join companies that were in need of an organisational change. Six years ago, I found such a company.
Studentkortet AB was a small business focused around a com-munity of young adults in Sweden. The business had been strug-gling for a couple of years and the owners were looking for someone to take the company on a journey of digital transforma-tion. They decided to put their trust in an untested twenty-seven year old with big plans and a large mouth — me.
Over the next five years, the amazing team and I transformed the company. We started by listening to our community and took this knowledge to another level to build smart, creative digital solutions that brought value to the vast majority of the members. We hired more people and began the task of creating AI and machine learning solutions to deploy the data in our BI into
Who am I anyway?
I had not planned to leave Studenkortet or anticipated making any kind of change, but I had to be part of this exciting community! Today, I am even more excited than I was in those first five minutes after Ali’s presentation, during our impromptu brainstorming session, and as we finally walked out into the cold January evening.
I am proud and humbled to have been given the responsibility to take over as CEO of UBI Global. Ali continues as Chief Commercial Officer and will be doing what he loves the most. He has together with the UBI team done a tremendous job growing an international community, arranged the World Incubation Summit, whilst creating the now renowned benchmark framework that makes the World Benchmark Ranking possible.
Our future goals and plans include nurturing and developing the cornerstones already in place to create new, exciting features that will bring further value to our entire innovation community.
My door is always open to the team and to you, the extraor-dinary members of the UBI Global community. I look forward to your insight and inspiration as we welcome a new year of innovation together!
Nothing Changes Except for the Changes
I had never heard of UBI Global until I found myself in the audi-ence during a talk on the diversity of businesses in Sweden. CEOs from different Stockholm-based companies gave the audience ten-minute introductions to their unique businesses. To be honest, my attention on the first couple of speakers was with half an ear, as I was also reading up on some emails on my phone. You’ve been there, right?
That is until Ali Amin stepped up on stage...
predicting future behaviour and (un)expected outcomes. The company continued to grow and at the end of 2018, Student-kortet was recognized with the Gazelle Award for being in the top 0.1% of the fastest growing companies in Sweden.
Back to the Auditorium
When Ali had finished his presentation on UBI Global, my head was spinning. I hung back until the conference was over and the auditorium was empty before stepping up to introduce my-self to the guy who just switched on my light bulb. We started talking and two hours later, we were still in the empty audito-rium and had filled out every square inch of a small whiteboard left behind by the staff.
Sometimes the next phase of life starts with a conversation — or in this case, a presentation followed by a conversation!
