Board Member Nominations at October Membership Meeting

Class A At-Large RepresentativeJosh Johnson, Superintendent, Valley City Public Schools Josh Johnson, a 1999 graduate of Devils Lake High School, earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of North Dakota (UND) and obtained his master’s degree in educational leadership from UND in 2012. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in educational leadership from UND. He began his teaching career at Grafton Middle School in 2004, teaching 7th and 8th grade social studies for two years and also serving as an assistant boys’ basketball coach in 2004-2005. The following two years, 2006-2008, Josh served as a graduate assistant women’s basketball coach at UND, while pursuing his master’s degree in educational leadership.

Josh began his administrative career in 2008 serving one year as K-12 principal at Barnes County North-Wimbledon (BCN). At BCN, he was the head girl’s basketball coach during the 2008-2009 season. From BCN, Josh and his family moved to Devils Lake, where he served as Central Middle School principal for four years. While at Devils Lake Public Schools, Josh also led the boy’s basketball team as head coach during the 2010-2011 season. Following his time at Devils Lake, Josh was the superintendent at Oakes Public Schools for three years from 2013-2016. Josh is in his fourth year as superintendent of Valley City Public School District. Josh serves as the president of the Sheyenne Valley Special Education Unit, board member on the North Dakota State Board of Public Education, board member on the North Dakota Career and Technology Board, board member on the North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders, and a member of the Valley City Economic Development Corporation. His family includes his wife Tristan, son Jayden (14), and daughters Rylyn (12), Piper (6), and Kambry (4). Josh and his family reside outside of Valley City on a small hobby farm.

Class A At-Large RepresentativeNed Clooten, Principal, Wahpeton High School Ned Clooten is a 1993 graduate of Beulah High School. He earned his bachelor’s degrees in Science Education and Coaching from Valley City State University in 1998, and obtained his master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2006. Ned began his teaching career in Minnesota at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton schools in 1998, teaching middle school and high school science for three years, while coaching Football, Basketball, and Track. From D-G-F, Ned and his wife moved to Alaska where he served as a science teacher in Juneau for one year in their alternative program for freshmen called CHOICE. While in Juneau, he was

the head coach for both girls and boys track earning three individual state champions and a team finish in the top five at the state meet in 2002. Since one could only leave Juneau by air or water, it was very ‘locked-in’ for this North Dakota boy. He and his wife moved to Nikiski, Alaska, after just one year in Juneau. While in Nikiski, Ned served as a middle and high school science and math teacher and as the Athletic Director for Nikiski Jr/Sr High. During his five years in Nikiski, Ned also served as head football coach and head boys and girls track and field coach. He also gained valuable experience hosting regional and state tournaments as an athletic director. During this time, Ned officiated basketball for five years and was selected to referee two regional tournaments. In 2007, Ned and his family moved back to North Dakota. He was hired as the high school principal and athletic director in Milnor, ND. In 2013, Ned was selected as the NDASSP Principal of the Year. His six years in Milnor were all great and helped Ned learn and grow as an administrator. In 2013, Ned was hired as the principal at Wahpeton High School. He is now in his seventh year as the high school principal there. Ned has served on many boards in his time in both Milnor and Wahpeton including NDASSP and NDCEL. He has served as President for NDASSP and is currently the Secretary for NDCEL. His family includes his wife Valerie, his sons Jackson (14) and Noah (12), and his daughter Ella (10). Ned is also a member of the Fergus Falls Church of the Nazarene, Fathers of the Year United, SECA, and a former leader of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on the campus of North Dakota State School of Science.

If you find a need to track more coach information than listed on this form, please feel free to add columns AFTER (to the right of) column 10. Only columns 1-10 need to be submitted to NDHSAA.

All coaches must be submitted each year. Only coaches not certified in a prior year will be mailed coaching permits. Coaching permits will be issued by the North Dakota High School Coaches Association. The due date for the Coaches Education Permit Submission form is April 1st each year. This form has been emailed to main school contacts and is available on the NDHSAA website under Forms. Please contact NDHSAA for any questions concerning this form.
