FROM THE DESK OF VEN JAYANTH JEYAVEERASINGAN
My dear people of God and the community,
As the incarnation of Christ comes amongst us, and as we prepare ourselves to stand at the portals of a new year, I would like to take examples from the fauna and flora, which is around us. They often bring serenity and soothe our hearts and minds, when human-beings cannot be of any help.
We take a box and put some paddy husks in it and we keep an
odd numbers of eggs which can be held by the mother hen. The maximum we usually go up to is 17 eggs. The mother hen sits on them for 21 days. For the mama hen to cluck and hatch her eggs properly, she has to come out once in two days, take a walk, eat and drink to gain strength. On the 20th day, you will hear the mama making a very tiny noise as if she is calling somebody and that is a sign that she has seen the eggs cracking and the chicks ‘chip, chip, chip’. It takes two days for them to hatch and then the mama and the children are put into a coop. After two weeks, they are let free with the mama to walk about. Whenever the mother confronts danger, she makes a very peculiar chirping noise and all the chicks run for shelter and hide. When the mama finds something special to eat, she makes
another noise and all her kids will gather around her and she will share it amongst the chicks but she will not eat a grain of it herself.
In the last few months, I have been involved in gardening, where our parishioner Savithri, who is now in charge of the garden, along with Velu, the gardener, Piyasena, and the sextants, in a cycle have been helping me to care for my plants—very specially the gerberas and the jasmines. When they bloom, it seems that they are smiling at you. Personally, I feel that no physician can bring such serenity and peace to a human heart. When I sit in my office chair in the vicarage, there is one particular gerbera, small in size, that catches my eye. I can see her turned towards the office-room as if she is smiling.

What is the lesson we human-beings learn from the above creation of God? God the Trinity is the Creator of the fauna and flora as much as He has made us in His own image and likeness. Like the mother hen gives signs to her babies, God gives us, His children, signs when there are dangers so that we can avoid
such situations. Also, like the mother hen, who when she finds something very special, calls out and brings her chicks close to her, Jesus Christ shares blessings with us so that in His name, we share it with the broken and bleeding world. The warmth of the mother hen, not only makes the embryo in the egg grow but after birth, the warmth of the mother makes diverse feathers in the growing chicks. In the same way, Jesus Christ helps us to grow physically, spiritually, and in prosperity.
The story of my little red gerbera reminds us that Jesus Christ is always smiling down at us and helps ease our burdens. It also conveys to us human-beings that the beauty of life is not to be hidden but to be shared as Christ shared the beauty of life with us.
In conclusion, Rajitha, Stephan, and Louis join me in thanking
all of you for supporting us in the pilgrimage of life during this year. As a family, we could never have wished for a better parish. We share our love with all of you and wish you and your families a blessed Christmas and a happy new year.
May the God of peace, creation, and history bless us all
Fr Jayanth
