On Jan. 11th the GMG Basketball Teams will be playing BCLUW in a JV/Varsity Quad. Prior to the Varsity

Girls game, we will be having a special ceremony to honor Coach Gary Peterson by naming the lower gym

court after him. Coach Peterson coached for 33 years with 31 being at GMG/Garwin. Over those years we

had a 478-216 record and later named into the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame. We would like to

make sure to pass the word around so that we can have anyone that is wishing to be part of this event the

opportunity to be here. Prior to the game, we will be having a few other activities (i.e. meal fundraiser)

planned that will coincide with the ceremony. More details will be released as the date approaches. If you

11 Winter Weather and School Closing Information at GMG

When bad weather threatens- As early as possible, weather and road condition information will be gathered from

various sources and through personal inspection by school personnel. GMG transportation director and superintendent

check road conditions throughout the district, share information, and typically prepare a recommendation prior to 6:30

Am. The superintendent then notifies the media and begins the staff telephone tree.

Start, delay or cancel? How we decide- The safety of students and employees is the overriding deciding factor. We are

sensitive to the needs he time of working parents who try to minimize the time students may be home without

supervision. When we cancel or delay, all preschool through 12th programs are included. Information regarding extra -

curricular activities is announced separately. There will be NO Before and After School Day Care when school has

been cancelled.

When we delay start times- When information suggests conditions will improve, school will start one or two hours

after the normal start time. The regular start time for GMG is 8:30 AM and regular dismissal time is 3: 25 PM.

Whenever GMG classes are delayed, there will be NO morning preschool class and NO breakfast will be served.

Parents will be notified regarding make-up days for the cancelled preschool classes.

Why we would decide to dismiss early- We are reluctant to dismiss students early. If at all possible, we will keep them

at school until the regular dismissal time. If very dangerous weather as freezing rain or blizzard is imminent, or unique

circumstances like power outage causing no heat, threatens students safety an early dismissal will be announced. If

early dismissal is determined it will be made as early as possible. Children normally transported on the buses will be

returned by bus according to the early dismissal schedule unless other arrangements have been previously made and

communicated to your child’s teacher/school.

Emergency (hard surface) routes- If we use emergency routes in the morning, we will also use the same routes in the

afternoon. Generally, if the county has placed an embargo on gravel roads, we will be using the emergency routes. At

other times if we feel snow and soft, wet conditions of the gravel roads are a safety concern, we will use the emergency

routes.

Weather conditions can be unpredictable, especially during the winter. How the GMG School District handles

emergency closing and delays, however, should be predictable. The following are specific guidelines that will be

followed in making these decisions.

When bad weather threatens- As early as possible, weather and road condition information will be gathered from various sources

and through personal inspection by school personnel. GMGs transportation director and superintendent check road conditions

throughout the district, share information, and typically prepare a recommendation prior to 6:30 AM. The superintendent then

working parents who try to minimize the time students may be home without supervision. When we cancel or delay, all preschool

through 12th programs are included. Information regarding extra-curricular activities is announced separately. There will be no

before and after school day care when school has been cancelled due to weather.

When we delay start times- When information suggests conditions will improve, school will start one or two hours after the normal

start time. The regular start time for GMG is 8:30 AM and regular dismissal is 3:25 PM. Whenever GMG;s classes are delayed, there

will be NO morning preschool class and NO breakfast will be served. Parents will be notified regarding make-up days for the

cancelled preschool classes.

Why we would decide to dismiss early- We are reluctant to dismiss students early. If at all possible, we will keep them at school

until regular dismissal time. If very dangerous weather as, freezing rain or blizzard, develops or is imminent, or unique

circumstances as power outage, of breakdown of a heating system threaten student’s safety, an early dismissal will be announced. If

early dismissal is determined, the decision will be made as early ad possible, and the media will be notified. Children normally

transported on buses will return by bus according to the early dismissal schedule unless other arrangements have been previously

made and communicated to your child’s teacher or school.

Emergency hard surface bus routes- If the county has placed an embargo on gravel roads, we will be using emergency routes. At

other times if we feel snow and soft, wet conditions of the gravel roads are a concern, we will use the emergency routes.

Greeting and Happy Holidays from the Industrial

Arts Dept. I can’t believe it is already December and half

way through the year. Things have been quite busy for

classes this year. Here are some of the things that we have

been hitting on this semester.

In Industrial Math Class we have been using the transit and have been laying out plots and how to use

Trigonometry to find the angles and distances to each point of the property without moving the transit.

The Intro to Ind. Arts class has been working hard on their patio tables and they will be done by the

end of the semester. During this process, they have used all of the machines in the shop and how to cut angles

and measure correctly.

Our Engines and Energy class is currently dismantling 2 engines that I have in the shop and are

learning about the 5 systems of an automobile, which include the Fuel System, Lubrication System, Electronic

System, Cooling System and the Exhaust System. Before the end of the semester, we will be exploring the

alternate energy vehicles including Hydrogen Cars and Electric Cars.

In General Shop, we have done a variety of activities, but one of the favorites is the aerodynamic

section, where we discuss the why planes stay in the air and cars stay on the ground. We make paper airplanes

for the airborne and Air Racer cars for the ground. The competition on how far the Air Racers go is fun to

watch.

I am really excited for the 2nd Semester to start. We have a new machine and are going to integrate it

into a new class called Manufacturing Processes. The new machine is a laser engraver that we have purchased

with Perkins money. In the new class, we will be using the CNC Router, the 3D Printer and the laser. This will

be an exciting time of year.

As the Holidays approach and plans are made for families and friends to get together, please enjoy the

times you have together, be thankful for what you have and most of all, take time for yourself and your family.

From the Family here in the CTE department to all of you, Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas and

Happy New Year!

From the desk of Mr. Spurlin

The year has been moving right along. In Earth science, the eighth graders are using a new curriculum and we are currently discovering convection currents and their impact on the atmosphere and ocean currents. Freshmen, in General Science, are working their way through chemistry concepts and ideas. The periodic table is becoming a useful resource, rather than another poster on the wall. Applied Chemistry & Chemistry are also working through the elements and the compounds those elements create. Shortly we will be naming compounds, which is interesting and new for the students. Physics students recently dropped devices to protect an egg from a 1-meter and 5-meter drop. After a philosophy write up and sketch or animated scaled design, student’s created the devices from 50 straws and ó meter of duct tape. This is a challenging task and more duck tape is always requested, but never granted. Several eggs survived the 1-meter drop, but only one egg survived 5-meters. Physics next challenge will be toothpick bridges. Keep in touch with your student and ask them about the cool stuff happening in science and all their classes. Mr. Teske

Happy Holidays Happy Holidays from the Elementary Staff! We hope families have a safe and peaceful holiday break. Please take time to talk with your students about giving and brainstorming ways your family might assist those who may be less fortunate. Outreach Program On December 17, GMG Elementary will be participating in the Outreach Program. The Outreach Program is a food packaging event which produces dried, non-perishable meals to be distributed to people in need, both locally and/or internationally. Students will help package meals and learn about hunger through presentations offered by the program. Our vision and goal is to provide our students the chance to help package great tasting nutritious meals for our community and allow them to use their talents in helping others. The packaged food will be distributed to organizations in need, such as, The House of Compassion, Child Abuse Prevention Services, Marshalltown Emergency Food Bank, NW Tama County Food Pantry in Gladbrook. Daycare Reminder Please remember that if you drop your student off before 8:00 or do not pick them up after the last set of buses, your child will be sent to daycare and you will be charged. Wednesdays Please remember that we have a 2:20 dismiss for professional development every Wednesday. Outside Recess It is the time of year when we get snow. I am asking that you send your children to school in snow pants and boots when there is snow. In order to be on the woodchips or grass, they will need to have snow pants and boots. If they only have shoes, they will be able to be in areas without snow. Also, it is getting cold out. Please make sure your children are appropriately dressed for the cold weather. The students will be going outside if the temperature is above zero with wind chill. Severe Weather and School Closings In case of severe weather and situations that demand school be closed, the official announcement will be made over radio stations KFJB (AM 1230), KDAO (AM 1190), WHO (AM 1040), KXIA (FM 101.1), KZAT (FM 95.5) and television stations KWWL (Channel 7) and KCCI (Channel 8). If rapid changes in the weather occur on days that students are already in school, we would ask parents to tune into those stations. We also send out messages through Gov Delivery. As a reminder, at GMG Elementary, we are a “Leader in Me” school. Below are the seven habits and a little description of what each means. Habit 1: Be Proactive I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my mistakes. I can only be offended if I choose to be. Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school’s mission and vision, and look for ways to be a good citizen. Habit 3: Put First Things First I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized. Habit 4: Think Win-Win I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in others’ Emotional Bank Accounts. When conflicts arise, I look for options that work for both sides. Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. I look people in the eyes when talking. Habit 6: Synergize I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than any one of us alone. I am humble. Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I take time to find meaningful ways to help others. Upcoming Events December 5 K -3rd Grade Winter Music Program 6:00 PM December 10 4th-6th Grade Winter Music Program 6:00 PM
