A Christmas Message from The Revd. Glyn Diggins

Believe it or not, Christmas is nearly upon us once more. I really don’t know

where the last 12 months have gone…but gone they have.

This time of year means different things to different people.

Some look forward to the festivities with a childlike enthusiasm and excitement,

while others face the season with a sense of dread. The sheer busyness of

preparing for it can leave us drained and tired and completely stressed-out,

rather than being in the mood for a joyful celebration of any kind.

Modern life can be exhausting at the best of times, Christmas preparations on

top of everything else can sometimes feel impossible!

We feel the pressure to create unrealistic scenes of utopia in our homes, based

on a Dickensian vista of bonhomie and tables straining under the weight of

Cordon Bleu cooking.

Add on top of that the pressure to purchase the latest “must haves” in order to

prove to our loved ones that we truly cherish them and the true meaning of

Christmas starts to slip into the background, buried under an avalanche of

marketing and unrealistic expectations.

Let’s strip all that away and start to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas,

which first and foremost is the feast of the new-born King: the God who

becomes one of us, to renew us and give us new life - the life that can never die,

the love which the Christian faith says is at the heart of everything. Christmas

celebrates the birth of one who shows, by his coming among us, as one of us,

that love can be a reality, even in the midst of a troubled world, peopled by a

deeply flawed human race.

The Christmas message which is prepared for, proclaimed and celebrated in our

churches here in Malton, and in Christian places of worship all over the world,

can help give all this a sense of meaning and reality.

The opportunity for worship and quiet reflection

can also help us to regain a sense of equilibrium

and balance in our lives and help discover or

rediscover what Christmas (and perhaps life

itself) is all about.

Maureen, Rhys, Myles and myself, wish you

all a very joyful and peaceful Christmas.
