honest by reporting illegal practice. You must have a current practice licence in order to per-form any intraoral duties. If you have a Dental Aide in your office who is performing any in-traoral duties OR if someone is asking you to do something which is out of your scope of practice, please contact myself, or Executive Director Susan Anholt immediately and we will direct you
on the necessary steps.
At the last council meeting in November, the question of Invisalign arose, and whether or not RDAs were able to place the bonded attach-ments necessary for the treatment. It was agreed that you will require your orthodontic module in order to do so. You can contact Amy Quickfall at [email protected] in order to be put on the list for the module in 2019. Something new that was added to our scope of practice was the ability for RDAs to apply liquid non-injectable topical anaesthetic products.
Another competency added to the scope!
The council voted on a motion a couple years ago to support and donate funds to Sask Poly-tech to aide in creating a Dental Implant Treat-ment Planning and Surgery course, as well as a Dental Implant Prosthetic course. With the con-tinued advancement of Dental Implants in the general practice, we felt the importance of en-suring RDAs are properly trained to assist in all aspects of the treatment. I am happy to an-nounce the courses are both in their final legs of planning and should be available soon. Keep
your eyes open for these exciting new courses!
The Proposed Salary Guide will see an increase of 2.5% for 2019 - please remember to complete the Compensation and Benefit Survey when the link is circulated - the more completed surveys we have, the more accurate our information. This information not only helps your council

The flip-flops and sun hats have been put away for another year and out have come the snow boots and mitts! This year has flown by and I would like to extend a happy holiday
season to all our members and their families.
2018 has been an exciting and busy year for
the SDAA.
This year we have seen the opening of a new Dental Assisting program at the U of S Col-lege of Dentistry in Saskatoon. With the lack of Registered Dental Assistants in the prov-ince (as of the November 2/3 council meeting there are 66 vacancies), this new program is a welcome addition. However, this program is not yet accredited - which means the gradu-ates will not be able to licence until that ac-creditation is confirmed. With this infor-mation, I wanted remind our members how important it is to keep our profession safe and

Schedule of Professional Events: Save the Date!
We are looking forward to the New Year and a much needed break with family and friends!
• Please ensure that your professional development requirements are uploaded and ap-
proved prior to January 31. You must allow our staff time to approve your uploads. Our
Member Management System cannot accept a renewal until your PD requirements are
approved by our staff.
• CPR is now required once every three years. Those member holding a ‘practice’ licence
who took CPR in 2015 must complete the course in 2018. January 2019 is a great time
as well! Renewals cannot not be processed without CPR.
• Please take the time to read about our continued relationship with the Canadian Diabetes Association (pg 9). Members that are
interested in addressing the dental disease associated with sugar consumption are encouraged to get involved. We need booth
volunteers for various events and would like to have members make presentations on sugar and oral related issues for plenary
sessions. Please contact the SDAA office if this is a public health initiative that interests you.
• Saskatchewan Polytechnic is offering an ‘Infection Prevention Control and Sterilization in the Dental Office’ online course for dis-
pensary assistants/dental aides’. Please raise awareness for this important course within your workplace.
• My wish list for 2019: That every member would login and enter their renewal data and generate their invoice; That as many members as possible would add SDAA as a payee in their online banking and use that method to make their
payment for licence renewal; That every member would begin to login to the Member Portal to maintain their contact information and upload their profes-
sional development; That every member holding a Restricted Temporary licence would upload their NDAEB certificate as soon as they receive it
from the NDAEB. World peace!
Respectfully submitted, Susan Anholt, (RDA) BA

when deciding on the Proposed Salary Guide - but it is also another great bargaining tool for your annual salary reviews (which if you were present at my lecture at the March SDHA PD event - you would have heard all about how important these annual reviews are and how you can increase your value in your office). I am always happy to speak to any of you regarding this topic, so feel free to
reach out.
Lastly, I am pleased to announce that we have signed a partnership with GoodLife Fitness. The SDAA knows how important a healthy lifestyle is, and are very happy that GoodLife will be offering our members a 30-40% discount on memberships and no enrolment
fees! Once the program is rolled out, the information will be found on the website.
Again, I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and hope to see you at the April 26-28, 2019 event in Regina which will be co-
hosted by SDAA, SDHA and SDTA.
Smiles!

Click “Invoice Me” and the invoice will be sent to your email. You need to print the invoice and give it to
your employer.
If the employer is paying for several RDA licences, all the invoices should be collected and paid with a
lump sum cheque.
The time has come for our members to utilize the Member Management System for all things dental assisting! Renewal forms are not being sent
again this year.
Effective December 15, our online renewal system will be open. You will need to login, and you will note a “RENEW” button. Click it and follow through the renewal process. Please ensure that your address, contact information and employment infor-
mation is correct.
Once complete, you will see an “INVOICE ME’ button. You must click it and an invoice will be sent to your email address. Do this before
you submit your payment!
It is then a simple process to log in to your online banking and make your payment. Our staff will enter the payment and will mail your re-
ceipt and practice permit.
If you do not utilize online banking, simply enclose a copy of your in-voice along with your cheque and
mail it into our office. Your payment
will be processed by our staff.
If your login does not work—call us,
we will help!
If you absolutely do not use a com-puter and will not be able to log in, a renewal form can be downloaded from the HOME page on the web-
site.
All renewals must be completed by January 31, 2019 in order to avoid
late fees.
Certificates from professional development events should be saved in your computer/phone (via down-
load, scan or photograph).
Login to the Member Management System, click on the link to “PD Upload” and the system will lead you
through the upload/data entry process.

Negotiating Wages
At the recent Council meeting, Council determined that Registered Dental Assistants with ‘application of topical anaesthetic’ on their competency list could apply non-
injectable topical anaesthetic.
This is considered to be a transfer of function, given that RDA’s with training in topical anaesthetic already under-
stand the principles of application.
Non-Injectable Topical Anaesthetic
Congratulations to the SDHA on planning and realizing a very successful dental mission to Clearwater Dene First
Nation and La Loche.
Thank you to RDAs Katelyn Buettner, Bertha Chartier, Melissa Janswick and Laurie Kuliasa for providing intra-oral services, chairside assisting, sterilization services
and for going above and beyond!

As a public health initiative, the Saskatchewan Dental Assis-tants’ Association is dedicated to raising awareness to health risks associated with sugar intake, therefore we will be continu-
ing our partnership with Diabetes Canada throughout 2019.
Diabetes Canada is a national health charity dedicated to help-ing people with diabetes to live healthy lives, and to the relent-less pursuit of a cure. They lead the fight against diabetes with a professional staff and over 35,000 volunteers and members. Diabetes Canada is the third-largest health charity in Canada, with a well-recognized and respected reputation since its incep-
tion over 60 years ago in 1953.
Diabetes affects everyone – and is on the rise. Latest statistics estimate that 100,000 people in Saskatchewan are diagnosed with diabetes – representing approximately 8% of the popula-tion. By 2020, that number is expected to reach 110,000 or close to 10% of the population. There are a further 176,000
people living with prediabetes or undiagnosed diabetes.
Diabetes Canada is dedicated to support Canadians living with diabetes to lead healthy lives, while promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for all Canadians in order to prevent these omi-nous and increasing prevalence rates. With the help of our community partners such as SDAA, Diabetes Canada contin-ues to spread the message of best practices in health manage-
ment, especially for those living with diabetes.
SDAA WILL SPONSOR DIABETES EXPOS
Diabetes Canada is proud to annually host a variety of educa-tional expos targeting key segments of the diabetes community. Diabetes Expos provide an ongoing self-management learning experience for people living with diabetes and are designed to increase awareness and knowledge about best practices in
diabetes self-management.
In 2019, we will be offering sponsorship and participation oppor-tunities at 3 key events which specific dates are yet to be deter-mined.
Indigenous Gathering Gala & Trade Show
• May, 2019 in Prince Albert, SK
North Central Health Fair
• August, 2019 in Regina, SK
Pediatric Day
• September, 2019 in Saskatoon, SK
All expos will include some or all of these elements – and more:
• Information sessions on a variety of specific self-management topics
• Experiential components such as fitness activities or risk assessments
• Tradeshow featuring information about diabetes-related products and health information from partner organizations
• Expert keynote speakers
• Nutrition breaks
SDAA Continues Partnership with Diabetes Canada in 2019

ANSI/AAMI/ISO 11140-1:2014 de-fines six types of chemical indicators:
Type 1 Chemical Indicators Type 1 chemical indicators are also known as Process Indicators. These types of indicators are external and indicate whether an instrument set has been fully exposed to the sterili-zation process.1 Indicator tape and labels placed on the outside of a peel pack are examples of Type 1 chemi-cal indicators.
Type 2 Chemical Indicators Type 2 chemical indicators are indica-tors for use in specific tests. These types of chemical indicators are used in specific procedures defined by ster-ilization standards.1 For example, Bowie Dick tests are used for a steam sterilizer with a pre-vacuum cycle to check the efficiency of the air removal and steam penetration in the auto-clave chamber.
Type 3 Chemical Indicators Type 3 chemical indicators are known as Single-Variable Indicators. These CIs react to one of the critical parameters (e.g., time, temperature, pressure) of the sterilization pro-cess, and indicate exposure to a sterilization cycle at stated values of the specific parameters.1
Type 4 Chemical Indicators Type 4 chemical indicators, also known as Multi-Variable Indicators, react to two or more critical param-eters of the sterilization process, and indicate exposure to the cycle at stated values of the chosen parame-ters.1 Time and temperature are examples of critical parameters that would be chosen for a steam sterili-zation process.
Type 5 Chemical Indicators Type 5 chemical indicators are also
known as Integrating Indicators, or Integrators. These CIs are designed to react to all critical parameters over a determined range of steriliza-tion cycles1. The performance of Type 5 Indicators have been correlated to the performance of biological indica-tors.
Type 6 Chemical Indicators Type 6 chemical indicators are known as Cycle Specific Indicators and are designed to react to all critical pa-rameters for specified sterilization cycles.1 For example, each Type 6 CI for a steam sterilization monitors the specific temperature and time of a chosen sterilization cycle.
