The Season of Advent

Advent is a time of preparation. We in the Christian church take this time

to prepare our hearts for the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Advent begins for us on Saturday, December 1st. Here are some of the ac-

tivities you’ll find during Advent at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer:

Advent Conspiracy Sermon Series ~ Join us as we look at choosing to make Christmas what it

should be – a joyous celebration of Jesus’ birth that enriches our hearts and the world around us. We

will explore what it means to Worship Fully, Spend Less, Give More and to Love All in this Advent

season.

Lighting of the Advent Candles ~ The word Advent is from the Latin “adventus” which means

“coming”… Join us in worship each week as we anticipate Christ’s birth with the lighting of Advent can-

dles.

Sunday Church School Christmas Program ~ Celebrate the coming of the baby Jesus with the

preschool through fourth grade church school students. The Sunday Church School program is Sunday,

December 16th during the Church School hour at 9:30 a.m.

Wednesday Church School Christmas Programs ~ The Wednesday Church School students will

share in WOW Worship throughout December. Here is the schedule:

December 5th: Preschool – Kindergarten

December 12th: 1st & 2nd Graders

December 19th: 3rd & 4th Graders

Longest Night Worship ~ This is a service of light in the midst of darkness. It is a worship service for

those who have heaviness in their heart this Christmas. This service includes candle lighting and prayer

and will be held on the longest night of the year, Friday, December 21st, at 6:30 p.m.

Christmas Eve Worship Services ~ The worship schedule can be found on the back page of this

newsletter.

LCOOR Care Fund

Our Mission of the Month for December is the

Care Fund. Dollars donated to the Care Fund are

primarily passed along to church members need-

ing help with food, clothing, rent, utility payments,

transportation, lodging and other emergencies.

When donating to the Mission of the Month, be

sure to clearly mark “Mission of the Month” on

your offering envelope so that it is properly credit-

ed. The dollars you give through Mission of the

Month are so very much appreciated by those

receiving the help they need. Thank you.

“By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on

high will break upon us, to give light to those who

sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide

our feet into the way of peace.” Luke 1:78-79

December is upon us, with all the busyness that

it brings. There is much to do as we prepare for

Christmas. Presents are purchased and homes

decorated for the season. We begin to anticipate

family coming to visit or prepare to travel to see

those that we love. Christmas cookies and other

seasonal goodies are baked. There are Christmas

programs and bake sales. The pace of Christmas

is out of control.

This is one of the reason that I love Advent. Ad-

vent is a time of preparation. It is a time of wait-

ing. During Advent, we wait in hopeful expecta-

tion of Christ entering into the reality of our bro-

ken world. Advent comes at the darkest time of

the year. During the longest nights there is prom-

ise that the light will shine. A savior will be born.

Hope comes to us. Advent preparation isn’t one

of busyness and hustle and bustle. It is a prepa-

ration that is marked with prayerful anticipation

and hopeful longing for the world to be made

new through our Savior, Jesus Christ.

I wish you all a blessed, intentional Advent

marked with prayerful waiting and the promise of

Christ’s light breaking into the darkness.

In Christ,

Pastor Dan

Bergan Announced as McGovern Hunger Ambassador Award Winner

The McGovern Center at Dakota Wesleyan University recently awarded Nyla Bergan with a

McGovern Hunger Ambassador Award during the annual South Dakota Hunger Summit on

November 13.

Nyla, a former Watertown teacher, leads the

Watertown Sandwich Ministry program at the Water-

town Salvation Army where volunteers assemble

and distribute nearly 200 sack lunches three days

a week.

Nyla travels the area to secure food donations for

the sack lunches and coordinates the “cookie

brigade” at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer,

which bakes more than 1,200 cookies a week.

In addition to her regular duties, Nyla recruits

volunteers and when in need, delivers lunches,

as well.

The McGovern Hunger Ambassador Award was created to recognize South Dakotans who exemplify

the same passion for ending hunger as George McGovern showed in his life’s work both home and

abroad.

Congrats, Nyla on this well-deserved recognition!

One of my birthday gifts this past year was a bracelet that contains the words, “Find joy in the jour-

ney!” It’s a beautiful message all year long, but seems especially meaningful during this season of

Advent.

As we recall the long journey taken by Joseph and Mary, there might not have been much “joy” in trav-

eling from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Mary was just days away from delivering her baby, was riding on a

donkey and didn’t even know where they would be able to stay when they arrived.

“While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her

first-born son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there

was no place for them in the inn.”-- Luke 2: 6-7

Now, as our present-day commercial and social expectations of the Christmas season demand our

time, we may find ourselves feeling more filled with stress than with joy! (Gifts to purchase, wrap and

deliver! Travel plans. Baking and hosting…or being alone.)

Advent helps us to once again, “Find joy in the journey.” The weeks leading up to Christmas provide

us with a time to prepare our hearts to receive God’s most precious gift of Jesus.

Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem brought indescribable joy to Mary and Joseph -- and continues to be the true

reason for our celebration as well. We hear again this season the amazing news that was delivered to

the shepherds on that Holy night…

“Do not be afraid; for see – I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people; to you

is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord!” – Luke 2:10-11

My prayer this December is that you “Find joy in your journey” – and that you share that joy with those

around you! Merry Christmas! Joy to the World!

Few treats bring me as much joy as sugar cookies! Diann Moe’s Angel Cookies

seem perfect for Christmas.

Angel Cookies ½ c. butter 1 egg, unbeaten 1 tsp. salt

½ c. shortening 1 tsp. vanilla 2-1/4 c. flour

½ c. white sugar 1 tsp. soda

½ c. brown sugar 1 tsp. cream of tartar

Cream together butter, shortening, white sugar and brown sugar. Beat in one egg and add vanilla. Sift

together flour, soda, cream of tartar and salt. Add to first mixture. Roll in small balls in your hands.

Flatten slightly. Dip in cold water in a small dish and then dip in sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 13 to

14 minutes.

Why have you been hearing so much about the Imagine the Blessings Stewardship Appeal for 2019? Because it is so important! It is how we accomplish the work of the Lord through Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer.

As of this writing (November 23), 223 families have returned their Statement of Intent card. If you aren’t among that number, there is still time. Please prayerfully consider what your family intend to give in offerings for 2019, fill out the Statement of Intent card (this can also be done online, by going to the church website – which is super easy and fast to do!)

I hope you know that your financial gifts make a difference! Seven days a week, God is at work among us. This church is alive with people, young and old. We are on our way, with generous supporters like you, to meet our 2019 goal of increasing our giving by $69,000 for the following 3 ministry initiatives:

$21,000 for feeding people spiritually and physically

$20,000 for more generously funding our “Missions of the Month

$28,000 for general church operations and church mortgage reduction

Also, your Statement of Intent for 2019, may help our congregation move toward receiving the $18,000 challenge amount for new and increased pledges. The $18,000 challenge will be divided in the following ways:

½ to LCOOR debt reduction

¼ to LCOOR missions of the month – divided equally among them

¼ to start a fund to replace the 2 sanctuary cameras (15 year old technology) that project baptisms and record musical pieces and sermons

Again, thank you for being a part of Imagine the Blessings stewardship for 2019!
