Stories of Faith in Action Back in fall when an email went out to the council with a request to help organize

dinners once a month for a woman’s shelter here in Murfreesboro. I felt a very

strong push to step up and offer to help. To see people come together from all

different backgrounds and religious beliefs to offer and provide a part of a meal to

some of the woman in our community is amazing. This has been a gratifying ex-

perience. To be able to offer these woman an opportunity to relax and not worry

about what, where and when they will eat a nutritious warm meal is simply heart-

warming. It’s not much for us but to them it meant a lot. I hope they felt the love that went into every

meal that was provided. -- Jaime Olsen

More information on how you can help with this important ministry on page 8

Won’t “Christmas” hurry up and get here???

November 1. That’s the date. You can buy some Thanksgiving items at the

store after that date, but really…that’s the date to “swap over to Christmas.”

Stores, radio stations, and even the Hallmark channel start shifting their

production to reflect CHRISTMAS!!! And with on-demand music and mov-

ies, we can select items from the Christmas genre ANY TIME WE WANT

THEM!!! (Christmas on-demand, so to speak.)

This all makes me think about one thing: the POWER OF STORY.

(Thought I was going to complain about too much Christmas too soon, did-

n’t you? Nope…not this time.)

Why do we connect to Christmas so eagerly? Why is it that we just can’t wait for it? I think the sto-

ries of faith surrounding the holy day of Christmas (and the season of Advent leading up to it) re-

minds us that we are part of a story that is larger than our own individual story! The story of the

babe in the manger is OUR STORY…the story of the Word made flesh is OUR STORY…for God

enters OUR HUMANITY!

Some folks wish to avoid the Christmas stories, because the loved ones they have shared stories

with for so long have died and the holiday celebration is simply too difficult. For them, we wish

peace. For others, they are still able to cherish and celebrate the season with their loved ones. For

them, we pray they might embrace the moments they still have together and that they might share

stories with one another.

My hope for you this Christmas is to see how God’s Good News is coming into the world to speak

into our bad news…to see how OUR STORY and GOD’s STORY come together for good.

May God bring you healing and hope this month as we recall the story of God entering our story in a very personal way. I wish you a Happy Advent and Merry Christmas!

Peace, Pr. Michael

December 5 (God’s Grace)

December 12 (God’s Grace in Daily Lives)

December 19 (Sharing God’s Grace)

Theme: God’s GRACE Changes Everything

The 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering brought together more

than 31,000 youth, adult leaders and volunteers to learn,

worship and experience God’s grace through the theme

“This Changes Everything.” The scripture focus was Ephe-

sians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith,

and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

Each adult, teen, and child gathered for these dinner wor-

ship experiences can learn from one another.

(A word to our adults: listen

closely to what children are say-

ing, don’t interrupt or correct right

away; rather, help them explore

the answers together. Also, we

encourage you adults to

“interpret” the questions for the

ages you are engaging with at

your table or in your small group.)

As a cross-generational gathering on Wednesdays in the season of Advent, we will eat a meal, sing parts of the Hold-en Evening Prayer, and share in Scripture readings and some light activities to help us engage the Good News and the Advent (i.e. the coming) of our Lord. We will have some kind of experience for everyone, young and old.

All children participat-ing in Advent’s Sunday School program (preschool - 5th grade) can participate. Safety Planning Meeting

The mass shootings occurring across our country – es-

pecially those occurring in churches – is causing us to

need to be more intentional about our safety as a con-

gregation. We are not alarmed, but we would like to do

our due diligence in caring for all who gather here for

worship and fellowship.

To respond to this need for intentionality, we have

asked one of our members, Lt. Eric Anderson (Training

and Special Projects, Office of the Chief of Police,

Franklin, TN), to lead a workshop to assist us in plan-

ning our care for those gathering under our roof. Eric

has led workshops like this for some time and can lead

a course for us at two different times:

Sunday, January 27, Noon - 1:30pm, and Tuesday,

January 29, 6 - 7:30pm.

The Civilian Response to Active Shooter

Events (CRASE) course, designed and built on the

Avoid, Deny, Defend (ADD) strategy developed

by ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Re-

sponse Training) in 2004, provides strategies, guidance

and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event.

Topics include the history and prevalence of active

shooter events, civilian response options, medical is-

sues, and considerations for conducting drills.

Please consider coming with thoughts and questions to share.

Pastoral Care Needs As a church grows, so does the need for pastoral care to the people of the congregation. To honor

that need, the expansive amount of calls and visits amplifies. But there is still only one Pr Michael.

So, how do we fix this problem?

Here’s a proposal: Pr Michael is looking for a team of people to be trained to handle making phone

calls and some visits so that the people connected to our congregation have ample opportunity to re-ceive care. Pr Michael will still be making visits,

but he also needs assistance with keeping track of the growing amount of concerns and care needs.

Pr Gretchen Person has also served this congrega-tion when visits have needed to be made, and

many thanks goes out to her for all she has done.

If you are interested in assisting Pr Michael with these pastoral care efforts, please contact him at

[email protected].

Remember: this will require some training with Pr Michael, making phone calls, keeping track of care needs, and even making an occasional visit with

folks in person.

We are better together!
