How Credit Bureau Freezes Can Help Prevent Identity TheftYou can protect your credit information by placing a credit or security freeze on your credit reports. A credit freeze can be requested free of charge for any Indiana resident, and their children under 16, as a consumer right provided by Indiana law. There are two major advantages to freezing your credit report:

• Blocks identity thieves from opening accounts/obtaining credit in your name

• Prevents new creditors from accessing your credit report

To place a freeze, contact each of the three credit agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) online or send a letter by certified mail to each agency. A credit freeze placed online or by phone must be completed within one business day. When you request to lift the freeze, credit bureaus have one hour to complete that request.
