President’s Report

by Peter McCarthy

Dear friends,

The month of November concluded on a sad note with the passing of club life member, DAVE CHAMBERS (70) on 29th (70 years to the day since the first Holden 48-215 (FX) rolled off the assembly line at Fisherman’s Bend). Our thoughts and prayers are very much with Dave’s wife of 46 years, Joanne, and their 2 children Leanne and Scott.

In accordance with Dave’s wishes, there will be no Funeral as such. Instead, there will be a Car Display in Dave’s memory on Saturday 19th January at Bell Park, Emu Park, Central Queensland commencing at 11:30am. Club members are invited to attend.

As this is the final REVS for the year, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the 2018 executive who enabled our club to continue running like a well-oiled machine (grey motor with triple SU carbies)! You have

been a great bunch of people to work with. Enjoy a well-earned break until the band gets back together in 2019.

Our next meeting is the AGM on Monday 11th February, where all positions will be declared vacant, and a new executive elected. Start thinking about how you might put your gifts and talents at the service of the club by putting your hand up to be an office bearer in 2019.

In the meantime, we look forward to the FX-FJ Nationals in Murray Bridge, SA 28th-31st December. Safe travels to those who will be attending.

Wishing you much peace this Christmas, and throughout 2019.

Until next month, keep Holden on!

QHMC: Cheryl Nott.

WA has a Historic Registration Scheme similar to ours which allows club runs and road testing. One refinement of their scheme is the “Impromptu Event”, which allows an individual club member to initiate a Club Run at short notice. In WA they are also known as “Single Vehicle Events”. Doug found out about this and made representations to Qld’s TMR about it. TMR has now agreed to us having “Impromptu Events” here in Qld. They advise that “the Department of Transport and Main Roads is happy for Queensland incorporated car clubs to manage “impromptu events” on a case by case basis, as long as the event is added to the incorporated club’s newsletter, website or social media page.” They acknowledge it can be for “one or more” vehicles. (The full email is reproduced at the end of this Bulletin.) This will give many of the benefits of a Log Book scheme without the restrictions and administrative burdens Log Books create for the member, club officials and Government. It is up to individual clubs whether they want to participate in the scheme or not, and how they implement it. In WA, clubs’ effect this in 2 ways: 1. By the member sending an email to the club which then goes on the website, 2. By filling in an on-line form, which results in it becoming a listed event automatically. The form can be set up, so a password is needed to access it. In WA they do not have the option of it being listed on the Club’s Social Media page. In deciding how to implement this, clubs need to take security into account, as thieves can target residences when they can find out the owner is away. This can be addressed in a number of ways.

2 possibilities are: 1. Password-protected online form and Events Page on the club website.

There are 2 problems with passwords: a. People forget them, and b. They can be passed on to others.

2. By creating a closed-group Facebook Page for the club, only accessible to financial members, on which they can establish events. This can be by a Facebook post. The Facebook page manager invites members to join the page once they tell him their Facebook ID. If they don’t pay their subs they are removed from the Group. Queensland Historic Motoring Council Inc. – 1376 Old Cleveland Road, Carindale Qld 4152 Mobile 0419 789 151 – Email [email protected] – Web www.qhmc.org.au

3. Where members choose not to have Facebook or Internet access, despite the inconvenience to the club’s webmaster/Facebook page manager, they could ring up to have an event listed.

This will also allow club members in remote locations to use their cars more often, as well as shift workers and fly-in fly-out workers who are unable to attend organised club runs. Some clubs are voluntarily limiting the number of Impromptu Events a member can initiate for each SIVS registered vehicle to 60 or 90 days a year, so they can be said to be using their vehicles no more than owners in the Log Book schemes in other States. Obviously Transport and Main Roads will be watching this carefully so let’s not give them reason to change their attitude. It needs to be stressed again that SIVS-registered vehicles cannot be

used for commuting to and from work, as a work vehicle, or for hire or reward. That would void their insurance if an accident occurs. There is increasing use of automatic number plate recognition in police cars, on overpasses etc., and it won’t be long before a press of one button will reveal the usage of a particular number plate. Frequent repeated use on one stretch of road will be detectable and in the event of a claim, insurers will look, as always, for any way to avoid liability. This is a great privilege – let’s not abuse it.

If you receive an infringement notice, check vehicle and number plate as in some instances false number plates have been attached to vehicles picked up through number plate recognition.

Do not leave keys in ignition when out of vehicle, like when posting a letter at the mailbox.

AEHF: Jeff Mann. Jeff checked the AEHF Facebook page. There is very limited info. The last newsletter is dated July 2018. They are accepting late entries for the Nationals.

This book features a lot of modified cars. Peter Whalley moves that a donation of $500.00 is sent to the Cancer Council. Seconded by Bob Schofield and passed by those present at the meeting. Jules Knight (previous member of our club, visitor) states that there is no new venue in sight for the Nationals in 2022. He wants to bring it to Qld to be held in the Redlands. We have political support. It will take approx. 3 years of planning. He suggests that the FX FJ Holden Club partners with the Northside Club and to take an expression of interest to this year’s Nationals in Murray Bridge. Dudley M. explained the money required to run a show and sponsorship is hard to get nowadays. Peter W. has an issue with the timing of the Nationals. National’s dates cannot be moved. It has to be between Christmas and New Year. Peter McC discusses Jules’s proposal with the members. Comments: - Great idea but what help will we get. We will all be 4 years older. - It is a huge job. - Economy is not favourable - Sponsorship is hard to get. Peter Whalley moves not to go ahead with Jules’s proposal and the Expression of Interest. Seconded by Dudley Monement and passed by those present at the meeting.

Peter McCarthy thanks Tineke and Donna for all their work in the last year. Also, a big thank you for the cakes made by Marion Monement and Jill Manganaro for supper. President Pete’s Jokes of the month. The teacher asked young Patrick Murphy: “What do you do at Christmas time Patrick?” Patrick addressed the class: “Well Miss Jones, me and my twelve brothers and sisters go to Midnight Mass where we sing hymns, then we come home very late, put mince pies by the backdoor and hang up our Christmas stockings. Then, all excited, we go to bed and wait for Father Christmas to come with all our toys.” “Very nice Patrick, “she said. “Now Jimmy Brown, what do you do at Christmas?” “Well, Miss Jones, me and me sister also go to Church with Mum and Dad, and we sing carols, and we get home ever so late. We put cookies and milk by the chimney, and we hang up our stockings. We hardly sleep, waiting for Santa Claus to bring our presents.” Realizing there was a Jewish boy in the class, and not wanting to leave him out of the discussion, she asked, “Now, Isaac Cohen, what do you do at Christmas?” Isaac said: “Well, it’s the same thing every year…..Dad comes home from the office, we all pile into the Rolls Royce; then we drive to Dad’s factory. When we get inside, we look at all the empty shelves…..and begin singing: What a Friend we have in Jesus.” ***********************

In the days before Christmas a bloke appeared before the local magistrate. “Now then, please tell me, what is the charge against you?” he asked the defendant. “I was caught doing my Christmas shopping very early, “the man replied. “That doesn’t seem like an offence to me. What do you mean by ‘very early’? “Well, your Honour, “said the defendant “It was before the shop was open.” Meeting closed: 9:15pm. Next meeting (AGM) 11th February 2019.

David Chambers lost his battle with cancer and infection on the 29th November 2018 at 3.27 pm. Now to most that is simply a date and time, but to the true Holden man he was, it is significant as this is the anniversary of the unveiling of the 48-215 and the time is a Holden motor size in the HK Holden Monaro which he was driving when we met. David's passion started like many when he learnt to drive in his Mum's cream Holden. From there he became involved in the Winton Motor Race Track near Benalla in Victoria, in the 1960s, as a track official and Marshall for many years.

After moving to Queensland in 1981, he joined the FX FJ Holden Club of Queensland (actually before we moved up in 1980) and over a period of 21 years he worked for the club at swap meets, car shows at various locations, camp out weekends and ultimately when the Club membership was dwindling he became President. For the next seven years together with a small group, he helped increase the numbers to 50 again by making the Club a family focused Club.

David was never a gushing person racing to shake your hand but he was a genuine person who loved your FX or FJ from the moment he met you. His knowledge of the details of the car was uncanny. David loved to go to the Nationals and up 2017 he had attended all of them after Nowra, except in 2006 when we were in Western Australia on our around Australia trip.

To take his Blue Panel Van on the road was a special time and he savoured driving it with various members of the club over that time.

David's battle with cancer started almost 4 years ago and he fought it bravely until a month ago when he was overwhelmed by an aggressive cancer and pneumonia. Throughout it all he maintained his sense of humour and values, he even started moving his models into the hospital room to keep his focus on a positive outcome.

In place of a formal service Leanne, Scott and I will be holding a day to honour David on Saturday 19th JANUARY 2019 at BELL PARK EMU PARK which was a sanctioned event by the All Classic Motor Club Rockhampton, with no flowers or cards but a donation to the Cancer Council who supported us through this journey We lost a good mate, friend and club member.
