Sadly, Anne Bordelon, one of our most active members has passed away after a full and active life.

Election Day, November 8, is behind us and there are likely to be significant changes. Whether or not they will be beneficial to most citizens remains to be seen. As these emerge, may I urge each of you to express your views to your elected representatives?

The Commission on Employee Retire-ment Security and Pension Reform, as-sembled by House Speaker Bill Howell, is studying state employee compensa-tion through July 1, 2021. The group has already put forward some good sug-gestions. It will issue annual reports by December 1 each year.

Ron Jordan, Executive Diector, is our VGEA representative. We should press our representatives to put State Em-ployees First. Improved compensation is our top priority. We need to let our voices be heard by the Governor and the General Assembly. We can do so by go-ing to virginiageneralassembly.gov and getting the contact information.

Our speaker was Tom Veazey of the Better Business Bureau, who discussed scams which target seniors. Treasurer

Faye Spruill presented her report and Vice President Dee Esser talked about future meetings. See Janet Martino’s Minutes on page 2 for more details.

We plan to meet on the second Monday of each month through April at 11:30 a.m.: • December 12 • January 9, 2017 • February 13 • March 13• April 10

The Brio restaurant was suggested for our December 12 meeting. The meeting room was booked, the minimum lunch was $17.95 plus tax & tip, and only one check would be prepared. So we will again meet at The Red Lobster, 8009 W. Broad Street, 23294 (804.747.9490). The 2016 November Meeting of the Retiree Chapter was held on the 14th at Red Lob-ster. The meeting was conducted by Walt

Pulliam, President. He asked that everyone check the listing that was being circulated to ensure that all information was correct.

Walt welcomed everyone. He asked if anyone knew the status of Anne Bordelon. It was report-ed that she was very weak and not doing well. No one knew the status of Doris Clements.

Becky Ryburn made a motion that we approve the minutes as published. It was seconded by Dee Es-ser. Motion carried.

Treasurer Faye Spruill gave the Treasurer’s Report. The balance as of October 31st was $1,763.07. Becky Ryburn made a motion that the Treasurer’s Report be approved. Dee Esser sec-onded. Motion carried.

Walt introduced our speaker, Tom Veazey, from the Better Business Bureau/Senior Fraud. His expertise is scamming. In addition, he is a half marathon runner, a photographer, and a volun-teer with nonprofits who work with children.

Mr. Veazey told us that his interest was prompted by his mother-in-law who received a call suppos-edly from her granddaughter asking for money. She almost lost $2,000. The total annual cost lost to scammers is about two billion dollars. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is trying to prevent these losses.

The top scammers are supposed calls from the IRS, debt collectors, sweepstakes, technical sup-port staff, government grants and lottery winners. None of these would notify you through a tele-phone call, nor would the lottery or sweepstakes ask you for money to process your winnings.

Four thing that you should do to protect your identity are: (1) Make copies of the front and back of all your cards (financial and medical) and your passport. (2) Keep a copy or the original of all your most recent bills so that you have the phone numbers to call to stop everything. (3) Check your balances on your accounts frequently. (4) Make a copy of your most recent credit report.

You should also call 1-888-382-1222 yearly to ensure you are still on the “Do Not Call List.”

Additionally, make sure you have privacy settings on your computer and iPad, and that your antivi-rus software is up to date. Do not open suspicious emails. If you do not recognize the name or num-ber on the Caller ID, do not answer your phone.

See page 3 for some tips from the BBB’s Senior Fraud Program and a listing of Senior Fraud Pro-gram Resources which Mr. Veazey provided.

Next, Vice President Dee Esser checked with Deb-bie’s Restaurant for our Christmas Luncheon, but it did not work out. She was asked to check on Brio’s at Stony Point. (I spoke to Dee and Brio’s was already booked.)Our Christmas Luncheon will be at the Red Lob-ster on West Broad at 11:30am on December 12th.

Walt asked that we please try and invite guests to join us. It might stir some interest in VGEA. Please let me know how many guests you will be bring-ing so I can let Red Lobster know how many to expect.
