A l Rent never stops. Perched on a seat at the production desk for Telesale – the place where the organizers track

the auctions and figure out what’s supposed to happen next, he only pauses.

“What?” he says, looking up. A floor director has called him and Al fast-walks past the studio cameras, cables, and Telesale hosts waiting to go on.

Just a few feet away on the television stage, other Telesale hosts are pitching items for sale and the phone bank is busy. Al is back less than a minute later: Everything’s fine, just a miscommunication somewhere.

But that’s the way it is during Telesale, the three-day, 10-hour televised fundraiser to benefit WIPB, a community tradition that started back in 1978.

Al and fellow volunteers Tom Foote and Gary Addison were here for the first broadcast and still work the sale every year.

“A group of us got together and said we’ve got to raise money for the station,” he remembers.

“Somebody said we ought to do an auction, and this thing was born.”

The show began in a downtown warehouse. Technology wasn’t so advanced then. Today, from a expansive green-screen “virtual set” in Ball State’s Teleplex, the broadcast has the polished feel of any modern live show.

From the beginning, it was a social event. Telesale was popular as a way to bid on vacation packages and other fun offerings, but part of the fun for viewers was to tune in to see who would appear on the show.

On this night, as Al thinks back to past shows, Ball State football coach Pete

Lembo arrives straight from his office at 8 p.m., slipping off his jacket and greeting the other volunteers.

Al has been director of PR for Marsh Supermarkets, owned an ad agency, been

co-owner of WLBC/WXFN Radio and served as director of marketing

for Ball State. Now he’s director of relationship marketing and community relations.

He’s hosted or emceed so many local events that The Star

Press dubbed him “Mr. Muncie” and named him their 2010 Person

of the Year.He smiles easily, lighting up especially

when talking about the station where his career began as a volunteer. He describes WIPB as a community treasure, and Telesale has always reflected that community spirit.

“It was organized chaos when we started,” Al says. “We all just had so much fun.”

He appeared on the air in a coat and tie. During a slow stretch one show, callers started bidding on his tie. They would buy it, and then give it back to be sold again. The tie raised $300 in a single night.

“And then a guy said, ‘I’ll give you an extra $100 if you’ll cut it in half - on the air.”

He spent the last half of the show with just half a tie dangling around his neck.

That was just the beginning: Somebody paid to have a pie thrown in his face, and that was so entertaining that Al became a regular target.

“I have suffered great indignity over the years but I have borne it well,” he says, with mock solemnity.

“I had to retire those clothes, though – too much whipped cream.”

By John Strauss, interim general manager

He’s everywhere: WIPB Telesale’s chief cheerleader marks 37th year

Bing Crosby Rediscovered: American MastersTuesday, December 2, 9 p.m.

Explore the life of this remarkable radio, film, TV, and recording star. For over three decades, through radio, film, television, and records, Crosby reigned supreme. Crosby recorded nearly 400 hit singles, an achievement no one - not Sinatra, Elvis or the Beatles - has come close to matching. Thirty-seven years after his death, he remains the most recorded performer in history. This film explores the life

and legend of this iconic performer, revealing a personality far more complex than the image the public had only thought they’d known.

Downton Abbey Season 4 MarathonSunday, December 14, 9 p.m.Season 4 of the international hit “Downton Abbey” finds aristocrats and servants coping with last season’s shocking finale. Indiana Weekend “Food Banks, Volunteers and Community” v

Saturday, December 13, 8 p.m.From food pantries across the region, we meet the people pitching in at Second Harvest Food Bank to feed the hungry. Watch volunteers helping in the annual White River cleanup to see what motivates people to serve, and assess how much the health of the river has improved. We

will see folks bring back a historic near-downtown Muncie neighborhood, focusing on local efforts to create a “sense of

place” to improve the city’s quality of life.

Frontline “The Madoff Affair”Tuesday, December 9, 10 p.m.In the mid-1960s, Bernard Madoff tapped money from Jewish businessmen at exclusive country clubs with the promise of steady guaranteed returns on their investments. Billions of dollars were channeled to Madoff’s investment firm, and his feeders became fabulously wealthy. FRONTLINE producers Martin Smith and Marcela Gaviria unravel the story — a deception that lasted longer, reached wider and cut deeper than any other business scandal in history.

there, off to Mexico, Fiji, China and many more locations.

December 20 & December 21 - Joy to the World

Tis the season to be jolly, as family and friends gather to
