council report The Mayor announced that the Council meetingsduring December would be held on 6th and 13thand tha t the meet ing a f te r the Chr is tmas b reakwould be held on 17th January.T h e n e w t e r m o f o f fi c e o f t h e p r e s e n t C o u n c i l

appeared to start with the hope that Aldermen andres idents wou ld be ab le to work together in anamicab le f ash ion . Bu t t he mee t i ng on 15 thNovember showed that the facade is crumbl ing.

T h e fi r s t i n c i d e n t w a s t h a t o f a r a t e p a y e r i nanother Ward who was objecting to a developmento n t h e l a n d n e x t t o h i s r e s i d e n c e w h e r e a s u bs t a n t i a l h o u s e h a d b e e n d e m o l i s h e d a n d p e r m i ss ion to use the land as an open park ing areawas being sought. However, the developer wantedt o e r e c t a 2 0 f t . w a l l o n t h e s t r e e t f r o n t a g e

)and an 8 ft. wall at the rea: which, with a landifeise of 9 ft. would have meait a 17 Vratepayer's legal spokesman politely requestedjpermission to speak against the building of thesewalls and the Mayor told him he should have made ana ppointmeitto speak at Council meetings and Aid.Casey then moved that the question be put andthe Labor majority voted for the development toproceed.The second inc ident concerned the long-s tand ingcomplaints of noisy industry by residents of St.A n d r e w ' s S t r e e t . A i d . O r i g l a s s s t a t e d t h a t apetition had been sent by the residents (and a^receipt held) to Council 6 weeks before butp^here was no mention of the petition on thefSusiness paper. At first it was denied that apetition had been received " and then it was admitted that "a letter with some signatures" had^een received and had been handed to the Counci l 'ss o l i c i t o r s a n d t h e r e t h e m a t t e r r e s t e d . I tj^ppears that Council received another solicitor'siietter accusing the residents of paranoid[ ehaviou and harrassing tactics against Mr.-^literis, "a manufacturer of switchboard com-^ponents". These seem to consist of large steelcabinets and girders and the use of V steel.T h e C o u n c i l ' s a t t i t u d e i s t h a t t h e r e s i d e n t s a r every naughty and cou ld get themselves in tot r o u b l e . W h e n t h e r e s i d e n t s s i g n e d a r e p l y t ot h i s s o l i c i t o r ' s l e t t e r , d o c u m e n t i n g t h e m a n ya b u s e s o f t h e N o i s e P o l l u t i o n A c t b y S l i t e r i s ,their reply was handed to the Council'ss o l i c i t o r s ! W h o d o e s C o u n c i l r e p r e s e n t ? W h a tlegal action do they plan to take and againstwhom?
