The O ANTIPHONS have been chanted at Evening Prayer in monasteries since at least the 5 th century AD. They celebrate an octave (eight days) of prayer from December 17- 24. Based on the prophecies of Isaiah, each one highlights a title of the Messiah. The Benedictine monks arranged them purposefully. “If one starts with the last (Latin) title and takes the first letter of each one Emmanuel, Rex, Oriens, Clavis, Radix,Adonai, Sapientia - the Latin words ERO CRAS are formed, meaning, “Tomorrow (i.e.December 25) I will come!” O COME, O COME EMMANUEL # 38 in the missalette arranges the Antiphons differently, but if we look at them in their original order, we see the unfolding of salvation history. “O SAPIENTIA (Wisdom), refers to God the Creator who ‘orders’, i.e. designs all things. This antiphon also foretells that Jesus will be Wisdom Incarnate: “The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom. (Is. 11:2). “O ADONAI”, (Lord & Lawgiver): “The Lord our lawgiver, the Lord our king…will save us.” (Is. 33:22). Moses received the Law from God. The next five recall the Messianic prophecies, culminating with Christ’s birth. “O RADIX JESSE” (branch, rod, flower) “A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse”, the father of King David. Jesus is David’s heir. “O CLAVIS” (Key of David): “I will place the Key of the House of David on His shoulder.” (Is. 22:22). Jesus is the key that opens Heaven. “O ORIENS” (Dayspring) “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” (Is.9:1) The sun rises in the ‘orient’, i.e. the east. “O REX” (King), DESIRE OF THE NATIONS: “ For a Child is born to us; a Son is given to us; and upon His shoulder dominion rests.” (Is.9:5) “O EMMANUEL(God with us): “A virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and shall name Him Emmanuel.” (Is.7:14) Additional missalette versions of the O ANTIPHONS include # 43, 56 and 55. The Choir will sing CHRIST, CIRCLE ROUND US #55. Note also the frequent use of the word ‘maranatha’. It can mean both “The Lord has come!” (maran-atha) and “Lord, come!” (marana-tha), referring to His first and final coming.

RESPECT LIFE

Christmas: A Gift of Life “The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus' message. Lovingly received day after day by the Church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as "good news" to the people of every age and culture. At the dawn

of salvation, it is the Birth of a Child which is proclaimed as joyful news: "I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord" (Lk 2:10-11). The source of this "great joy" is the Birth of the Saviour; but Christmas also reveals the full meaning of every human birth, and the joy which accompanies the Birth of the Messiah is thus seen to be the foundation and fulfilment of joy at every child born into the world (cf. Jn 16:21)” (Pope John Paul II, “The Gospel of Life,” n.1). The next Respect Life Holy Hour: Friday, January 19, 2018 at 7:00pm.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS COLLECTION

The Second Collection at the Masses this weekend (Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17) will help defray the significant cost of our beautiful Christmas flowers and decorations. Thanks to your generosity, our Church has always been resplendent at Christmastime. As in past years, donations may be made in memory of your beloved deceased family and friends; please type or print each name neatly, and kindly limit the number of names submitted. The names of those so memoralized will be printed in our epiphany bulletin.

CONFIRMATION ENROLLMENT CEREMONY At the 10:00am Mass on Sunday, December 17, a confirmation Enrollment Ceremony will be held for all candidates receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in 2018. Please keep these young people in your prayers

PARISH CALENDAR FOR 2018 As you leave the Church this weekend, you’ll receive – compliments of the Dorsey-Carlone Funeral Home – a beautiful Catholic liturgical calendar for 2018, each month illustrated with an inspiring image of Christian art. May the Lord fill you and your family with many blessings each day of the new year!

PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD On Monday, December 18, our parish will once again participate in Advent Reconciliation, a day when all parishes in the Archdiocese, in preparation for Christmas, are offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 4:00pm through 8:00pm. No matter how long it may have been since your last confession – weeks, years, even decades – there’s no time like Advent to experience the mercy of God in the Sacrament of Penance. Seize this moment of grace!

A BLESSING FOR MOTHERS TO BE

The Fourth Sunday of Advent finds the Church waiting with the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph in anxious and joyful hope for the birth of our Savior. Assumption invites all expectant Moms to attend the 10:00am Mass next Sunday, December 24 to receive a special blessing after Holy Communion as they, too, joyously await the birth of their infants.

PROCESION IN HONOR OF THE CHILD JESUS

Each year on Christmas Day, our Spanish community celebrates the Pasada del Niño, a parade-like procession beginning at 1:00pm at the Peekskill Train Station and continuing up Central Avenue to the Church. This procession consists of “Allegorical Cars” – elaborately decorated vehicles accompanied by family members dressed as characters in the Gospel infancy narratives. The final figure in the Pasada is the statue of the Child Jesus, which was donated to Assumption in 2008 by the Archbishop of Cuenca (Ecuador). A solemn Christmas Mass will follow in the Church at 2:30pm. All are welcome to experience this festive display of faith and devotion.

NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR THE UNBORN December 28 marks the Feast of the Holy innocents when, during the Octave of Christmas, we commemorate those infants slaughtered by King Herod. The Unites States Bishops ask Catholics on that date to remember the unborn. Accordingly, Assumption will host a bilingual night of prayer on Thursday, December 28 at 8:30pm through midnight. A night of Eucharistic Adoration, music, praying of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and other prayers for the protection of innocent human life in the womb and healing for those who have had abortions.

MARCH FOR LIFE 2018 The annual March for Life in Washington D.C. takes place on Friday, January 19, 2018. Forty-five years ago, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Roe. V. Wade, legalizing abortion and leading to the deaths of millions of babies in the USA. Please join hundreds of thousands from around the nation as we march, hand in hand, to stop abortion.

CHRISTMAS FOR PARISHIONERS IN NEED Bring joy to a family in need this Christmas by participating in Assumption’s gift drive. Items requested by parish families will be listed on envelopes hung on a “Giving Tree” on display before the 10:00am Mass on Sunday, December 17. In the spirit of Saint Nicholas take an envelope bearing a name of an individual and his/her wish list. Please bring the wrapped gifts with the original envelope to the Rectory no later than 9:00pm on Thursday, December 21. No extra charge for the feeling of happiness you’ll experience.

ADVENT WREATH PRAYER – THE THIRD WEEK “Lord God, may we, your people, who look forward to the birthday of Christ experience the joy of salvation and celebrate that feast with love and thanksgiving. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.” (-William G. Storey)
