Christmas “Oplatek” Wafers Authentic, Traditional, Blessed Christmas Wafers “Oplatki” will be available at the parish office. Each wafer has embossed Nativity Scenes. Continue this wonderful Christmas tradition or begin a new one.
Polish, Slovak and Lithuanian background families observe this Christ-mas tradition. Family members and friends break off a piece of Oplatki and give it to one another to eat, expressing the best wishes and blessing upon them and asking for forgiveness. Have your family participate in this tender, touching family celebration of love and for-giveness.
A heartfelt thank you to all who volunteered to clean the church on Saturday, Dec. 7th. Thank you for sharing of yourselves for the benefit not only of our parish fam-ily, but also for those who will visit us during the Christmas season.

Shortly after the church was built, J.G. Stuckstede of St. Louis was commissioned to produce a bell. It weighed 700 pounds with a diameter of 33 inches with a ring tone of A. It was installed in the new church in 1867. The bell foundry in St. Louis began in 1855 by Johann Gerhard Stuckstede. In 1863 Stuckstede took his much younger brother Henry as a junior partner, forming J.G. Stuckstede & Bro. (1864-1883). This foundry was probably the largest American producer of bells west of Cincinnati. The foundry closed its doors in 1961.

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer
Our Gospel reading today focuses on the transition from the ministry of John the Baptist to the ministry of Jesus. Through
the centuries John has been honored as the greatest of the prophets. Jesus says of him in today’s passage, “I solemnly as-sure you, history has not known a man born of woman greater than John the Baptizer.” (Mt. 11:11) Yet we know very little about
him. He left no writings and there is no Book of John the Baptist in the Bible. The little we know from the brief accounts in the Gospels is that John was a firebrand and an eccentric, even by the standards of his time. (How else would one describe someone who wore camel's hair garments and ate locusts and wild honey?) Yet John was so alive with the fire of the Spirit that he fearlessly proclaimed the Kingdom of God and rebuked moral corruption, even though it cost him his life.
Perhaps you’ve noticed that John is not featured in our Na-tivity scenes nor on our Christmas cards. John's words are harsh and demanding and make us uncomfortable. Yet, the Gospel reminds us that if you want to get to the joy of Bethlehem, if you want to see what's in the manger, you must first go through this crazy prophet in the wilderness. We must prepare the way of the Savior by leveling the mountains and filling in the valleys that obstruct the path of God in our personal lives and in the world.
OK, but what does this have to do with us? First of all, you and I are called to be John the Baptist. No, we are not called to live in the wild, wear animal pelts, and eat insects. (Thank God!) But all of us are called to give bold witness to Jesus. By our words, deeds and our very lifestyles, others should realize that we live in the joy of knowing that Jesus is Lord. To the extent that we fall short of this (and we do), we are rightfully the target of John’s wrath. We must confront our fail-ings, turn away from ourselves and turn towards those in need.
As Jesus’ disciples we also need to be diligently working at the tasks of the Savior: caring for the poor, the infirm, the imprisoned; reaching out to those who need mercy and forgiveness; bringing the joy and light of Christ to those who have been deadened by our me-centric, indulgent culture. These actions sound very altruistic, but it is really hard, dangerous work. Like John, giving witness to Christ and the Gospel may often require us to take unpopular stances versus the so-called prevailing wisdom of the world around us.
We are called to make straight the path of the Lord by put-ting the Gospel into action. Instead of over-indulging ourselves and our children with countless non-essential presents, let's take care of those who are in dire need of necessities by including charities that serve the poor at the top of our Christmas giving lists! There are many worthy charities, but here are a few to consider: The Glenmary Home Mis-sionaries (P.O. Box 465618, Cincinnati, OH 45246 or www.glenmary.org); Catholic Relief Services (www.crs.org); Catholic Charities (www.catholiccharities.net); the Holy Family Food Pantry (912 8th Street, Waukegan, IL 60085 or www.holyfamilyfoodpantry.org); and our parish St. Vincent de Paul and PADS ministries (donations can be made at the Parish Office).
If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an email to [email protected].
Pray the Daily Rosary Please join other parishioners in the Eucharistic Chapel following the 8:00 AM Mass Monday through Thursday.
Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet The Divine Mercy Novena & Chaplet is prayed on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Fridays of the month, immediately following the 8:00AM Mass.

Family Mission Today As part of our sesquicentennial, the Mission Ministry invites you to participate in a Family Mission to Pacific Garden Mission on Sun-day, December 15, 12:30-3:30pm. Pacific Garden Mission is located at 1458 S. Canal St., Chicago, IL. On an average night, more than 500 homeless men, women and children receive safe, clean and warm shelter at PGM. During the cold winter months that number climbs up to well above 800. In addition to a clean, comfortable bed, PGM also provides food and clothing, as well as medical and dental care, if needed. Pastors and counselors provide needed spiritual help. Everything is provided free of charge to all who enter "the doors that never close." A group from St. Mary's will help make beds and prepare and serve lunch. Come join us. Invite your family and friends or come as an indi-vidual willing to help. Please contact Kathy Payette (847) 949-1633 [email protected] or Jim Robinson (847) 970-9213 [email protected] to sign up and inquire about car pooling, if needed.

Looking to the Future A General Parish Consultation
With Fr. Ron Lewinski announcing his new appoint-ment as the Cardinal’s Delegate for Parish Transfor-mation, the Archdiocese will now begin the process of selecting a new pastor for St. Mary of the Annuncia-tion. In keeping with Archdiocesan policies and proce-dures, a special Consultation Team consisting of Bishop George Rassas, our Vicar, and a representa-tive of the Priests’ Placement Board will meet with our parishioners on Monday, December 16th, at 7:00pm in the new church. The purpose of this meeting is not to name a new pastor but to give the Consultation Team an op-portunity to meet parishioners personally and to dis-cuss the needs of the parish and what they would like to see in a new pastor. Everyone is welcome to attend. The current pastor and his staff do not attend the meeting. The Consultation Meeting is divided into four seg-ments and usually lasts one and a half hours.
Prayer and Introduction with an explanation of diocesan policy regarding pastorates.
Listening to Parishioners as they speak about their parish, its needs, its blessings, its present concerns and the qualities they are seeking in a new pastor.
A question/answer period allows parishioners to ask for clarification about the process, how long it will take before a new pastor is named, etc.
A written form is given to participants asking them to:
- list the qualities they want in a pastor. Parish-ioners can name a priest they would or would not like to see as their next pastor.
- name the top three strengths of the parish -name the top three areas of greatest need in
the parish
This is a significant moment in our parish’s life and we rely upon the help of the Holy Spirit to guide us and to strengthen our unity as the parish of St. Mary of the Annunciation.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul -- Providing Assistance Every Day of the Year It is the time of year when many people think about the poor, the down trodden, the homeless, and those who have no family or are separated from family by distance or other circumstances. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul thinks about these people all year long. Their actions speak for themselves. Their work is life-saving -- helping individuals and families avoid slipping into poverty by assisting with utility bills, rent, food, transportation, medical expenses and even emotional and spiritual support. As you prepare for Christmas, consider setting aside part of your shopping budget to help the Society continue its good works with a tax-deductible charitable donation or perhaps setting aside time by joining the many volunteers who see the face of the Christ Child in those they serve. Your time and talent may make the difference for a family. Your generosity may bring Christmas to a child. Please call (312) 655-7181 or visit www.svdpchicago.org to learn how you can help your neighbors in need through membership, volunteerism or donations. Merry Christmas and God's blessings from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

“You cannot imagine how much better your marriage
will be once you start applying Allen Hunt’s life‑-changing wisdom to your relationship and life!” --
Matthew Kelly
Dr. Allen Hunt – an engaging, inspiring national speaker
on marriage Dr. Allen Hunt’s current partnership with Matthew Kelly and the Dynamic Catholic Institute marks the latest step of his fascinating faith journey. Allen left a lucrative business career to become an ordained pastor, ultimately serving as a senior minister in a United Methodist “mega church” in Alpharetta, Georgia. Allen credits his conversion to Catholicism in 2008 in part to the continuous prayers of a group of Dominican sisters he befriended at a lecture in 1992. Allen now hosts a nationally broadcast radio show and writes a weekly column on life and faith for the website Townhall.com. His Methodist preacher heritage formed him into an engaging, highly motivational speaker; his conversion experience brings a Catholic sensibility to his reflections on married life. We are delighted that our parish has been selected by Matthew Kelly’s Dynamic Catholic Institute to host Dr. Allen Hunt this February when he presents “Passion & Purpose for Marriage” right here at St. Mary!
In celebration of the rich heritage of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish and to further commemorate the Sesquicentennial Year, we are gathering recipes and compiling a new Parish Cookbook. Chop for LifeI
t’s time to put some logs in the fireplace, enjoy a lovely fire and watch your favorite TV show. But you need wood, nice dry hardwood that makes a really enjoyable fire. The seminarians at the
University of St Mary of the Lake have wood for sale. All the wood is seasoned oak from the forested grounds of Mundelein Seminary, and is chopped, delivered and stacked by the seminarians. Proceeds from the sales go to the Women’s Center, a local non-profit pro-life preg-nancy outreach program. The suggested minimum donation is $150.00 per face cord (8 x 4 ft). Smaller and larger quantities are available. The wood will be delivered on Saturday, December 14 and in January.
To order your wood contact Thomas Quirk at [email protected] or 847-837-4758. Give them a call; you will enjoy the fire and help the seminarians in their pro-life outreach.

Meditation Garden Memorial Pavers The St. Mary of the Annunciation Meditation Garden is designed to provide a serene place for
prayer and meditation. With the inclusion of our Holy Family and St. Francis of Assisi shrines to-
gether with many varieties of beautiful plants, trees and shrubs, the meditation garden provides a
welcoming environment for prayer and reflection.
In celebrating our 150th Anniversary, we want to continue the work started in the past to
enhance this sacred space, honor those who went before us, and leave a lasting legacy for those
who will come after. Therefore, we will again be installing another phase of engraved paver stones
along the pathways of our meditation garden.
You can be a part of this beautiful garden by purchasing one or more engraved pavers.
You may wish to mark the year you joined St. Mary, remember a deceased loved one, or show your
joy as our parish celebrates 150 years of praising God and sharing our faith in Jesus Christ. Even if
you have participated in a previous phase of pavers for the garden, you may have others you now
wish to remember or new blessings to celebrate during this special jubilee year.
Two sizes of pavers are available. Up to four lines of text
may be engraved on the 6”x12” paver. Up to eight lines of text may
be engraved on the 12”x12” paver. Seventeen characters are allowed
per line, including punctuation and spaces.
GARDEN CONCEPT The centerpiece of our meditation garden is a sculpture of the Holy Family. Engraved paver stones lead to this shrine and provide an outdoor gathering area for the community. From this central area, gravel walking paths move outward, meandering through the field. The shrine of St. Francis of Assisi is another key focal point in the garden where you’ll find a meditation bench for private prayer.
GARDEN SYMBOLISM In many ways, a garden and its season symbolize our Christian experience from the dawn of creation to the present day, from birth to life to death to rebirth.
Springtime In Spring, the garden bursts forth with variety, abundance and bloom similar to the way the creation must have unfolded when God crafted our meticulous perfect world, and us in it. The beauty and feelings of contentment and happiness a garden gives us is a powerful yet inade-quate glimpse of what life must have been like in the Garden of Eden when humanity enjoyed a world of paradise in fellowship with God.
Fall & Winter In the Fall and Winter, flowers wither and plants die, and what was once alive and full of life fades away. The ground becomes barren and we sense a loss of something dear. This is a reminder of original sin, the fall from grace, banishment from the Garden, death and life without God.
Spring & Summer In Spring and Summer, the garden reawakens as a place of beauty and happiness. Nature’s power overcomes the harshness of winter as it mysteriously resurrects life from the ground and plants return to their full glory. The sun and rain feed the garden, sustaining it and giving it the ability to thrive. This parallels the victory Christ won for us over sin and death through his Resurrection. We are sustained by the power of his promise never to forsake those who believe in him. Nourished by the gift of his word and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we anxiously await the day when he will return to restore his Kingdom and rule over his people. Our lifelong walk along garden paths reflects the individ-ual walks each of us experiences as Christians as we discover God’s mercy, purpose for our lives and his abiding presence.
