Merry Christmas

This Christmas season we fi nd our world not unlike that very fi rst Christmas - a world of unrest, without peace, and in need of a Savior! The Bible had prophesied the coming of a Messiah to bring hope, peace and justice to the people. He was to come as a baby, born to Joseph and Mary in the small town of Bethlehem. Unfortunately, most of the people were expecting a king with royal splendor and did not recognize the baby Jesus, born in a simple manger. But His life, death, burial and resurrection will bring much hope to those who believe in Him - He will return in the future to rule the world and bring the peace all have been longing for. And in His love, we will continue collecting non-perishable foods for the Tri-City Food Bank here at our offi ce - please help if you can by bringing in canned and packaged food. For information on our programs, call us at 520-896-9545. We are located at 1575 W American Ave. You can also check us out at www.familyfi rstpcc.org. May God bless you and your family with hope and peace this holiday season and into the New Year!

By John Hernandez On Tuesday, Dec. 4, Oracle Ridge School opened their new playground with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Superintendent Todd Kissick and School Board President Alicia Bristow held the ribbon while all the kids took their scissors and cut off a piece of the ribbon. Thanks to a $5,000 grant through First Things First, Oracle Ridge School was able to upgrade their old playground. The new playground is covered with wood chippings for safety. New playground equipment has been added and the size of the playground area has been expanded.

By Gary EverySpecial to the Crier In the southwest, there are legends about a mysterious light and the invisible lady who holds the lantern. The story always begins with a lost cowboy on horseback, parched without any water, leaving the desert terrain for the rugged canyons on the edge of the mountains in hopes of finding a watery oasis that will spare his life. The lost and wandering cowboy sings himself a song, hoping to buck up his sagging spirits while his horse keeps plodding along unaware of the danger they are in. The cowboy sings loudly trying to pretend he is not afraid. The cowboy is lost and thirsty, in danger of dying alone. He whistles and sings until his parched throat stops him and then the echoes of the song

The cowboy and the singing light

ricochet for a little too long. The echoes take the song an extra verse longer than the cowboy does and he realizes someone else is singing along. The cowboy rejoices, he is lost no more, he has been saved!

This voice which is singing along, singing the same song as the cowboy is melodious as the song of an oriole and it belongs to a beautiful female. Of course, the cowboy has not yet seen her. He never will. All he will ever see is the light of the lantern held about horse high but all women are beautiful to a cowboy especially one who is lost and wandering. When he spurs his horse to fi nd her all he ever sees is a bright light, a light bright as a lantern held about the same height as a woman on horseback would hold a lantern to guide herself through the night. The woman only keeps singing as long as the cowboy keeps following. When the cowboy halts his horse, the lady with the light stops singing and silence fi lls the twilight darkness. Many a lost and lonely cowboy has followed the singing light needing to fi nd a drink of water from a mountain

oasis to save him from his thirsty plight. To tell the truth some cowboys have been rescued by the singing lady who led the cowboy and his thirsty horse through the labyrinth of narrow

canyon and giant boulders to discover a hidden spring or unexpected tinaja still fi lled with sweet fresh rainwater, before she, her lantern and her invisible horse ride away into the sky, slowly climbing the

stars. However, the lady with the light has also led some cowboys through the darkness to the edge of a precipice and beyond, to

where they tumble to their death. So the next time you are lost in the desert and hear the singing voice, see the light being held horse high

will the lady lead you to your death or guide you to safety? I suppose maybe that it all depends on exactly how you treat your ladies.

By Dr. Michael MilesSpecial to the Crier Are those sleigh bells ringing in your ears or could it be tinnitus? Tinnitus is a medical diagnosis given to those unfortunate individuals that suffer constant ringing in the ears with no apparent origin of the sound. It is estimated that 30 percent of the population experiences some form of tinnitus and that 25 percent of these are

bothered enough to seek professional help. Tinnitus is a condition (a state of being) not a disease. There are many reasons that can cause this phenomenon. A major distinction can be made between objective and subjective causes. The objective causes have some sort of physical source of sound that can be perceived by another person. This can occur when there are

muscle spasms inside the ear precipitating sound or louder than normal heart pulsations near the ear. Subjective causes of tinnitus are a bit more far-reaching. Sometimes the sensory hairs inside the ear that transform sound vibrations into perceivable sound in the brain can be misfiring. This can occur after trauma from very loud noises such as high volume music, gunfire,

Health Issues: Discussing tinnitusexplosions, industrial sounds, etc. Other reasons for subjective ringing or hissing or other sounds include: repercussions from medications, repercussions from degenerative nerve diseases, repercussions from infections, foreign objects in the ear, wax buildup and nasal allergies that effect fluid drainage. Tinnitus may be associated with hearing loss, though not always. It has proven difficult to remedy. Some approaches try to eliminate the perception of sound, while others simply try to mask what is thought of as “phantom” noise with other noise. Many pharmaceutical drugs include tinnitus in their long

list of possible side effects. It seems reasonable to identify and reduce or eliminate all possible drug influences...including caffeine and nicotine. It would, of course, be recommended to avoid loud noises to see if normal hearing can be restored through simple healing. Evidently, earpieces that seal off the opening to the ear and channel sound (music, etc.) directly into the ear without avenues of escape are particularly problematic. Another form of treatment to consider is cranial sacral adjustments. This is a method of subtly maneuvering the plates of the skull. Re-aligning these plates can possibly correct objective causes

of tinnitus. Some massage therapists are skilled in this form of treatment. Stress of all kinds (emotional and physical) is always a consideration in conditions like this. In this case, it can increase blood pressure and contribute to objective causes of tinnitus. It is also important to remember that there are many sources of “white noise” in our world today. These sounds can easily be misinterpreted as tinnitus. Consider the constant hum of tires on the road, the hum of high power lines and other electrical devices (especially hearing aids). Tinnitus is an irritation that is often simply tolerated, but at times can be resolved with proper evaluation.

By John Hernandez Sky Island Roasters is located at 1575 W. American Avenue. The business is owned and operated by Deb and Robert Breen. They have been in Oracle over 10 years and Robert has been operating his land surveying and drafting business Environmental Field Services LLC. Sky Island Roasters was started by their daughter Melissa and her husband Beau Wilson, and has been operating in Flagstaff for five years. The Breens have been roasting coffee for four years and brought the five-kilo roaster from Flagstaff to Oracle where they opened another Sky Island Roasters in Nov. “We are passionate about drinking and roasting coffee,” said Robert.

“Fresh roasted coffee is much more potent and pleasing to your palate.” Robert and Deb explained how coffee cherries are like wine grapes. Inside the cherries are the beans. Depending on the origin of where they are grown, they develop different flavors from the soil, climate, elevation and water. The Breens can custom roast and custom blend for those that are knowledgeable about their coffee. They have prepackaged coffees for sale or they can roast, grind and package fresh coffee in 20 to 30 minutes. Twelve to fifteen varieties of unroasted beans are kept in stock. Some of the coffees they carry are Columbian, Brazilian, Guatemalan, Mexican Chiapas and Ethiopian Harrar Fair Trade

Organic. A subscription service, which ships their coffee to customers’ homes or businesses, is also available. Their blends include their signature American Blend that consists of a finely roasted blend of Brazilian, Colombian and Guatemalan origin, a Sunrise Blend that is South American and/or Central American origin and an Espresso blend.

These are roasted to a Full City plus roast (medium). They also have a Sumatran Decaf and Columbia Decaf. Sky Island Roasters uses a mountain water decaffeination process that keeps the coffee flavors intact. No chemicals are used in the process.
