#37 Volcanic Landforms Background Information (do not copy!)
• Molten rock below the surface of the earth is known as magma.
• Magma collects in pockets a few miles under the surface and as pressure build it forces its way up and eventually causes a volcanic eruption through a vent, or opening in the crust.
• The cooled magma around a vent forms a conical shaped landform called a volcano.
The word volcano is derived from the Roman God of Fire, Vulcan.
• Magma contains mostly oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, titanium, manganese.
• Magma in earth’s surface is called lava. • Lava has different consistencies due to what it is
made of. • All magma contains gases.• Volcanoes explode due to the release of gases.• The strength of an eruption is due to what the
magma is made of and how much gas it contains.
