Day 5
Little Rann of Kutch
Breakfast at the first blush of dawn today as the Deccan Odyssey pulls into the Viramgam station
where you will disembark to drive to a stop over point and transfer to jeeps for a safari into the
deceptively named Little Rann of Kutch.
The Rann is a seasonal salt marsh, the largest in the world at over 7500 sq. km, a saline desert where
the dry air whips your face, mirages abound and parched earth unfolds as far as the eye can see.
During the monsoons, these arid flatlands fill with water creating a still, salt y sea.
Explore the Rann on your jeep safari; the Wild Ass Sanctuary here is one of the few places to spot the
ghudkar, or Indian wild ass. Other species here include the desert fox, jungle cat, jackal and several birds.
Since there is virtually no vegetation for animals to hide behind, they are easy to spot while driving
around.
After your visit to the sanctuary, lunch will be at the Rann Riders Resort with time to relax and refresh
yourselves. Enjoy the regional specialties of the Maliks of Rann, and delic ious Gujarati fare in this
charming resort surrounded by the desert.
Spend some time walking around and meeting the other species of the lodge which include the unique
to the region Marwari and Kathiawari horses.
Later, drive out for a village safari to meet the varied communities that call the Rann their home. You
will find the Agarias, salt-panners, hard at work drying out the salt. Visit the homes of the Rabari tribe
and experience their way of life. Another interesting aspect to look out for are the bea ded bangles
made by the Mirs of Dasada. Continue to a local school where you will be greeted by enthusiastic
children eager to share information about themselves and learn about your part of the world.
Having taken in your share of this great white vastness, return to the Deccan Odyssey for dinner and
head for Patan.

Day 6
Modhera - Patan
This morning the Deccan Odyssey rolls into Patan, the 8th century fortified town, the capital of
Gujarat in medieval times.
Breakfast over, disembark and drive to the sun temple at Modhera. This grand, awe -inspiring 11th
century sandstone monument was built by the Solanki dynasty and is dedicated to the sun god. The
complex is full of elaborate carvings and the resident priest enjoys explaining the legends they depict.
A step tank in front of the temple has 108 shrines that lead down to the water.
After visiting the sun temple, drive to Patan to visit the lovely 11th cent ury step well called Rani ki Vav,
a fine example of subterranean well architecture. Walk down into the depths of this extravagant step
well, one of the biggest in Gujarat, passing hundreds of delicate carvings and statues of Parvati, Shiva,
Vishnu and other gods etched into its side walls. It is evident that this well was constructed not just to
store water but was also a site for worship and community gatherings.
Thereafter, visit Patola house, the centre of the Salvi family’s traditional craft, the creati ng of
exquisite silk Patola sarees. Weavers since the 12th century, the Salvi’s have enjoyed the patronage of
the royalty of Gujarat as the sarees created by them have gained the reputation of works of art.
Having visited Patola house, drive back to the Deccan Odyssey for lunch on board. The afternoon is at
leisure as you proceed towards Nashik.
In the evening watch the tapestry of rural India unfold as you sip a sun downer before dinner.

This morning the Deccan Odyssey brings you to the holy city of Nashik, which is rapidly gaining the
status of being the wine capital of the country.
After breakfast, disembark for an active start to your morning as you head to Pandu Leni - considered
one of the most ancient Jain and Buddhist cave temples in India. Some of this set of 24 caves, date
back to 1st century BC and others are from a more recent period like 13th century AD.
After your climb down from the caves, drive to the Grover Zampa vineyards for an exclusive tour of one
of the finest Indian wine producing facilities. Walk through vines laden with Chenin, Chardonnay and
Shiraz grapes. Be taken through the age old ‘méthode traditionnelle’ used to make one of the best
known brands of sparkling wines in India.
Allow the sommelier to acquaint your taste buds with their finest creations of white, red, rose and
sparkling wines and experiment pairing them with your meal at the vineyards.
Return to the Deccan Odyssey for lunch, and relax for a while.

Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan is the alighting point for the famous Ranthambore National Park, and India’ s
efforts to conserve the dwindling tiger population can be seen here. The park is one of the finest tiger reserves
in the country and the most likely place to spot one of these majestic animals.
Enjoy an early morning breakfast before you set out for your morning game drive.
Ranthambore is home to several other species as well; you can see herds of Chital and Sambhar deer as well as wild

Arriving at Agra, you will realize that the Mughals were not just the greatest dynasty to rule India but also its
greatest builders. After a leisurely breakfast on board, you will visit the Taj Mahal, which was Emperor Shah
Jahan’s gift of love to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and is truly the world’s most wondrous monument. The
making of the Taj Mahal is as much a fable as the edifice itself. It took 20000 men 22 years to build t his
unrivaled mausoleum and its exquisite white marble was brought from 200 miles away by caravans of
elephants and camels.
Lunch at a City Hotel.
After lunch, your tour of Agra continues as you visit Itmad-ud-Daulah, a marble mausoleum built by Nur Jahan,
the wife of Emperor Jahangir, in memory of her father, Ghiyas Beg. Sometimes called the ‘Baby Taj’, it is
beautifully conceived in white marble, mosaic and lattice.
Thereafter proceed to Agra Fort, another outstanding example of Mughal architecture, and t he seat of Mughal
reign and administration for three generations. The present structure owes its origins to Emperor Akbar who
had its first buildings of red sandstone erected on the eastern bank of the river Yamuna. His grandson Shah
Jahan, the most artistic and prolific builder of the dynasty, later added the impressive marbled private quarters
and the mosque while Aurangzeb added the outer ramparts. A visit to the Diwan-e-Am, ‘Hall of Public
Audience’ and the Royal Pavilions is not to be missed.
Later, you have the opportunity to visit the local markets to admire the exquisite Pietra Dura (marble inlay)
artefacts and Mughal ornaments OR as an optional activity you may avail of spa facilities at a hotel before

Agra
Arriving at Agra, you will realize that the Mughals were not just the greatest dynasty to rule India but also its
greatest builders. After a leisurely breakfast on board, you will visit the Taj Mahal, which was Emper or Shah
Jahan’s gift of love to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and is truly the world’s most wondrous monument. The
making of the Taj Mahal is as much a fable as the edifice itself. It took 20000 men 22 years to build this
unrivalled mausoleum and its exquisite white marble was brought from 200 miles away by caravans of
elephants and camels.
Lunch at a City Hotel.
After lunch your tour of Agra continues as you visit Itmad-ud-Daulah, a marble mausoleum built by Nur Jahan,
the wife of Emperor Jahangir, in memory of her father, Ghiyas Beg. Sometimes called the ‘Baby Taj’, it is
beautifully conceived in white marble, mosaic and lattice.
Thereafter proceed to Agra Fort, another outstanding example of Mughal architecture, and the seat of Mughal
reign and administration for three generations.
Later, you have the opportunity to visit the local markets to admire the exquisite Pietra Dura (marble inlay)
artefacts and Mughal ornaments OR as an optional activity you may avail of spa facilities at a hotel before
completing your tour of this historical city.

Sawai Madhopur – Ranthambore National Park
Sawai Madhopur, in Rajasthan is the alighting point for the famous Ranthambore National Park, and India’s
efforts to conserve the dwindling tiger population can be seen here. The park is one of the finest tiger reserves
in the country and the most likely place to spot one of these majestic animals.
Enjoy an early morning breakfast before you set
out for your morning game drive.
Ranthambore is home to several other species as well; you can see herds of Chital and Sambhar deer as well as wild
boar, Nilgai antelope and chinkara gazelles. There are also sloth bear, a few leopards and crocodiles.
Extensive bird life includes jungle fowl, partridges, quails, the crested serpent eagle, woodpeckers, flycatchers etc.
There are also water birds like storks, ducks and geese at the lakes and waterholes. If it’s your lucky day, you
could spot a tiger lolling around lazily in the sun, or feverishly hunt ing down deer around the lakes!
When you’re done with the jungle, return to the comfort of the Deccan Odyssey. Feel free t o share the spoils (of your
photo-shoots!) over a leisurely lunch before you set out for a village safari.
The people of Rajasthan’s villages are mostly tribal who subsist on farming and hunting. These friendly folk are
warm and welcoming, happy to show guests around their villages, giving deep insights into their daily lives.
The women here wear bright colours to offset the drab desert, and most people live in mud huts. Visit a local
home for a and interact with the family.
After a fulfilling afternoon, proceed for high tea at the Sawai Madhopur Lodge, the former hunting lodge of the
erstwhile royal family of Jaipur.

and you will notice a timeless quality to Jaipur's bazaars and its people.

Bijapur
Relish breakfast this morning as the Deccan Odyssey arrives at Bijapur, the historic ca pital of the Sultans of
Deccan.
Established between the 10th and 11th centuries by the Kalyani Chalukyas, Bijapur changed hands often,
passing into the hands of new conquerors and invaders. In the second half of 16th and early 17th century,
under the aegis of the Adil Shahi dynasty, their capital city of Bijapur occupied a prominent place among the
celebrated cities of India and even surpassed great cities of Delhi, Agra and Mughal I ndia. Due to the secular
nature and liberal patronage of the Adil Shahi Sultans, many scholars, poets, painters, dancers, calligraphers,
musicians, Sufi saints and other men of arts flocked to Bijapur which also came to be known as the 'Palmyra of
the Deccan'
After breakfast, disembark and first head to the
Gol Gumbaz, literally ‘round dome’, and the second largest tomb in the world; the mausoleum of Adil Shah, the
Sultan of Bijapur, it is a structural triumph of Deccan architecture, with a circular galler y where the tiniest of
whispers gets magnified owing to the unique acoustics of the dome.
Next, head to the Jumma Masjid, known as one of the first mosques in India and then onto Malik -e-Maidan,
the largest medieval cannon in the world. Don't hesitate to make a wish here as legend has it that if you touch the
gun and make a wish, it will come true!

by the Chalukyan kings in a completely experimental style, with each temple different from the others in the
complex and even from other temples in India itself.
Continue on to Pattadakal situated on the banks of the Malaprabha River and explore the architectural style here
which combines South Indian (Dravidian) and North Indian (Nagara) forms. In fact this architecture can be seen to
have influenced later architecture commissioned by the Hoysala and other dynasties.

Hampi. Stop at the Narasimha statue and spend some time taking pictures and looking around.
Next head to the mustard Ganesh, located at the base of the Hemkuta hills , and quite a misnomer as the
elephant God statue here is anything but small! Take in the breathtaking vistas around the hills with their little
caves and alcoves. Walk the banks of the Tungabhadra River as you leave the Virupaksha temple on to the
famed Vittala temple, the polar power sites of Hampi, one a living temple, the other a most extra vagant

This morning the Deccan Odyssey rolls into royal city of the Nizams, Hyderabad. Legends abound over how this
capital of the Asaf Jahi dynasty came to be called Hyderabad. One of the more interesting ones is that it was named
after Bhagmati, the Hindu wife of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, who converted to Islam and changed her name to
Hyder Mahal.
After an early breakfast this morning, disembark and drive towards the epitome of Nizami culture and
grandeur, Golconda. Originally a mud fort, it soon acquired impressive proportions after becoming the seat of
power of the Qutub Shahi dynasty. Return to the Deccan Odyssey for lunch and a little rest.

Standing tall in the centre of the city, Charminar is a global icon for Hyderabad and one of the most recognized
structures of India. It was ostensibly built there by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah to fulfill his vow of building a
mosque if the plague epidemic ravaging the city ceased. It is interesting to walk through and shop in the
markets in the Charminar area, a busy bustling area. Walk through Laad Bazaar for the local jewellery,
especially exquisite bangles, and to Pather Gatti for the famous Deccan pearls.
