9 We Should Consider What Kingdom Is Meant

The “kingdom of heaven”is the coming Messianic

kingdom on earth—thekingdom of God in Jesus, the Messiah. It isless about heaven, but rather the kingdomof the One who came from heaven.

Dear Friends of Israel,The UNESCO resolution launched by

Jordan and the Palestinians concerningthe holy sites in Jerusalem, especially theTemple Mount and the Wailing Wall, hasstirred up quite a dust storm, not only in

Israel but also internationally as well. In theresolution, the Temple Mount is referred to

only by the Arabic name, “al Haram al Sharif,”and the Wailing Wall is called the “Buraq” Wall.Israel saw the resolution as a clear attempt to bury

the historical connection of the Jewish people to theirholiest place, the Temple Mount. This is already appar-ent on the grounds there. As I recently led a studygroup on a tour of the Temple Mount and told the peo-ple about it, an Arab security guard suddenly appearedand told me in a harsh voice, “If you say the words‘Temple Mount’ one more time, I’ll throw you out ofhere. This is not the Temple Mount, it’s ‘al Haram alSharif.’”Similar developments have been noted at other reli-

gious-historic sites, such as the grave of Rachel. Priorto 1990, this site was referred to as the grave of Rachelin the Palestinian school books, but since then it hasbeen called the “Mosque of Bilal Ibn Rabah,” the firstmuezzin (caller to prayer) of Mohammed. This rewriting of history is not only an attack on

Jewish history; it’s also an insult to the Islamic histor-ical record, which has already documented the grave ofBilal Ibn Rabah in Damascus, and has always calledthe grave in Bethlehem the “Grave of Mother Rachel.”One commentator wrote, “This resolution isn’t about

protecting the cultural heritage, it’s about replacing itby rewriting history. It’s like a modern pogrom against

Jewish history, a campaign that’s trying to reinvent Jewish historyand thus negate the historic connection of the Jewish people totheir land.”The stated purpose of UNESCO is supposedly to build peace

among all people. Attempting to deny reality and facts and ignor-ing thousands of years of history will not lead to peace. It is pre-cisely this negative mindset that poisons and worsens the relation-ship between Israel and the Palestinians.Nir Barkat, the mayor of Jerusalem, said, “The UNESCO reso-

lution is just as absurd as saying that the Catholic Church hasnothing to do with the Vatican, or that Islam has nothing to do withMecca. If UNESCO says there is no connection between Jews andthe Wailing Wall, then I can only say, ‘UNESCO has utterly lostits grip on reality.’”Even Irina Bokova, the General Director of UNESCO, sharply

condemned the resolution and spoke about the importance of rec-ognizing and respecting the long historic connection that the threereligions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism, have to that site.Last but not least, Pope Francis declared in a public speech,

“God promised that land to the people of Israel.” Ayoub Kara, anIsraeli minister, thanked the pope personally for his statement. Hetold reporters, “I felt that the pope’s statement was a direct mes-sage to UNESCO, as they are attempting to negate the connectionbetween the Jewish people and the Temple Mount.”Thank God that above all, the declarations and promises of God

are written in the Bible. For those of us who believe the Word ofGod, it’s fascinating to see how Jerusalem, in particular theTemple Mount, is increasingly becoming a stumbling block for allpeoples, especially for the surrounding Islamic nations. In the knowledge that God has always worked in all things,

including UNESCO resolutions, so that His will might be fulfilled,Shalom,

When we hear the term“kingdom of heaven,” wethink automatically of thedimensions of heaven, theplace where the Lord Jesusreigns at the right hand ofthe Father, and where wewill go when we die. Even ifthis expectation is right initself, the “kingdom ofheaven” means somethingquite different.

The “kingdom of heaven”is the coming Messianic

kingdom on earth—the king-dom of God in Jesus, theMessiah. It is less aboutheaven, but rather the king-dom of the One who camefrom heaven. As the “king-dom of heaven,” it onlyoccurs in this form in theGospel of Matthew; the otherGospels call it the kingdomof God. As Matthewaddressed his Gospel to theJews, and they were afraid toexpress the name of God, heused the general term “heav-en” for God, just as Danieldid, “Hew the tree down, anddestroy it; yet leave thestump of the roots thereof in

the earth” (Daniel 4:23b; cf.2:44). It is about the kingdomthat will be ruled from heav-en.First, John the Baptist pro-

claimed it in Matthew 3:1-2.After that Jesus Himself pro-claimed it in Matthew 4:17.Later, the disciples pro-claimed it at the command ofthe Lord Jesus, accompaniedby signs and wonders(Matthew 10:5-8). Finally, the Lord said, “But if I castout devils by the Spirit ofGod, then the kingdom ofGod is come unto you”(Matthew 12:28). His castingout of devils and miraclesproved that the kingdom ofheaven had come in His per-son.Then Israel rejected her

Messiah and King. The king-dom of God took on anotherform at first, which isexplained more clearly inMatthew 13. Jesus Christascended into heaven afterHis crucifixion and seatedHimself at the right hand ofGod. The King is absent inorder to reign spiritually andinvisibly from heaven overthose who believe in Him, theChurch made up of Jews and

Gentiles. But the Lord pro-claimed in Matthew 13 that Hewill return at the end of thisage to execute judgment, andto finally set up His earthlykingdom. This is why in themillennium of peace, Satanwill actually be cast out in thesense of Matthew 12:28 and betaken captive (Revelation20:1-4).

The kingdom of heaven, thus, is not the spiritual king-dom as the body of Christ, even if this at that time wasalready hidden in God. In theGospel of Matthew it is firstlyabout the visible earthly king-dom of God, which the OldTestament prophets promisedand the Jews awaited. This wasthe situation Jesus was speak-ing in. We should not interpretsomething in the “kingdom ofheaven,” which at that timewas His doctrine but notrevealed. As someone wrote inLife Is More 2016, “We need tobe willing to glean the truthfrom the Bible, and not to readinto it our desires or tradi-tions.” The kingdom of heaven was

prophesied in the OldTestament as the reign of Godon earth from Israel (Daniel

2:44; 7:13-14; Isaiah chapters2 and 11; Jeremiah 23:5-6;Zechariah 14). As the incarnateGod and Messiah, Jesus hadcome near visibly and was pre-sent. The King and His king-dom, however, were rejectedby the Jews (Matthew 12:24;Luke 19:14; John 19:15). Fromthe visible kingdom of God onearth came the invisible king-dom in the hearts of those whobelieve in Jesus, the King ofthe kingdom (Romans 14:17; 1Corinthians 4:20; 6:10; 15:50;Ephesians 5:5; Colossians1:13; 1 Thessalonians 2:12; 2Thessalonians 1:5; 2 Timothy4:18). And the King and Hiskingdom will appear visibly atthe completion of this age, when Jesus Christ returns ingreat power and glory andestablishes His millennialkingdom on earth (Matthew13:30, 49; 2 Timothy 4:1;Revelation 11:15; 12:10;14:14-20; 19:6; 20:1-4). Afterthat, the eternal kingdom willappear in its ultimate form (2Peter 1:11; Revelation 21:1ff.;22:5), and finally the transfor-mation will take place whereGod will be all in all (1Corinthians 15:28).(MR0716/797)

What Is the Kingdom of Heaven?

A discussion with NorbertLieth on the nature of thekingdom of God, the con-nection between Israel andthe “kingdom of heaven,”the new earth, and the sig-nificance of the promisethat God will be “all in all.”

Many different opinionscirculate within evangelicalChristianity. What are themost important points inyour opinion for our under-standing of the kingdom ofheaven? We should at all costs consid-er and keep apart which king-dom is meant and at whattime. When John the Baptist,as the preparer of Jesus’ way, proclaimed the kingdom, hespoke of the imminent, visi-bly coming Messianic king-dom (Matthew 3:2). Jesusproclaimed the same thingwhen He began to appear inpublic as the Messiah. In HisSermon on the Mount, it was

about the conditions to enableus to enter this earthly king-dom of God (Matthew 5). Forthis reason, the Lord says inthe Beatitudes, “Blessed arethe meek: for they shall inher-it the earth” (Matthew 5:5).Since the rejection of Jesusby the Jewish people, thekingdom has become invisi-ble, and those who belong tothe Church of Jesus Christwill enter it. After the raptureand the Great Tribulation, thepromise for Israel will comeinto effect and the visiblekingdom with the return ofJesus will come (Revelation

12:10).

In Daniel 2:44 the kingdomof God is compared to astone that crushes the king-doms of this world. How doyou explain this prophecybriefly? What has alreadytaken place, and what is yetto be fulfilled?The statue that the Babylonianking Nebuchadnezzar dreamedof in Daniel 2 symbolizes thevarious kingdoms of thisworld. The stone that was cutout of the mountain withouthands and broke the statue inpieces points to Jesus Christ.Jesus is without earthly origin,hence the stone that was cutout of the mountain withouthands. He came from heaven,was conceived through theHoly Spirit and born of a vir-gin. At His return the Lord willcome from heaven, crush thekingdoms of the world, and setup a world empire Himself(Daniel 2:34-35). The first fourempires of the statue arealready history. They wereBabylon, portrayed by thegolden head; Medo-Persia, bythe breast and arms of silver;

Greece, by the belly and thighsof brass; and Rome, by the legsof iron. The feet of iron andclay point to the last stage ofthe world kingdoms in the lastdays, which seems to be takingplace today. In Daniel 7 andRevelation 17 we find the par-allels to the last phase.

In the Bible, kingdoms areoften mentioned in connec-tion with mountains. Canyou name a few examples?A mountain in theBiblical/symbolic language isoften a pointer to a kingdom,i.e. a governing power: thekingdom of Babylon isdescribed as a mountain(Jeremiah 51:25), Samaria also(Amos 6:1), Assyria and Egyptas well as other nations (Micah7:12). The seven mountains inRevelation 17:9-10 stand forseven kings, i.e. kingdoms. The kingdom of the Messiahbecomes a mountain (Daniel2:35, 44; Micah 4:1). Themountain of Zion stands forJerusalem, and ultimately forthe saving power of theMessiah from the capital ofIsrael (Joel 3:16-17; Revelation

We Should Consider What Kingdom Is Meant

14:1). In the Messianic king-dom the mountain of the Lordwill stand over all mountains,i.e. be exalted above all nations(Isaiah 2:2; Micah 4:1). In thisregard, it is interesting that theLord Jesus made his “govern-ment policy declaration” forHis kingdom in the Sermon onthe Mount on a mountain. As itwas about the dawning of thesovereign rule of Jesus as theMessiah of Israel, the moun-tain was a suitable place. InPsalm 15, it says as a propheticpreview of the Messianic king-dom, “Lord, who shall abide inthy tabernacle? who shalldwell in thy holy hill? He thatwalketh uprightly, and workethrighteousness, and speakeththe truth in his heart. He thatbackbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproachagainst his neighbour. Inwhose eyes a vile person iscondemned; but he honoureththem that fear the LORD. Hethat sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. He that put-teth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against theinnocent. He that doeth these

things shall never be moved.”

What part do the people ofIsrael play in connectionwith the kingdom of God?At the establishing of the king-dom of Jesus on earth, the mil-lennial kingdom, Israel willplay an important part. First, the remnant of Israel will beled through the time of tribula-tion described in the book ofRevelation, and brought torepentance. At the return ofJesus this remnant will besaved. When the Lord sets upHis kingdom, then, Israel willreign with Him. It says inDaniel 2:44, “And in the daysof these kings shall the God ofheaven set up a kingdom, which shall never bedestroyed: and the kingdomshall not be left to other peo-ple, but it shall break in piecesand consume all these king-doms, and it shall stand forever.”

How do the statements of theapostle Paul agree with oneanother, and how do youexplain them: “the Jew first, and also to the Greek”

(Romans 1:16); and, “Thereis neither Jew nor Greek”(Galatians 3:28)?The Jews were offeredredemption first, then thenations or “Greeks.” JesusChrist and His gospel came tothe nations via Israel. Chapters1 to 9 of the book of Acts tellus how redemption was firstoffered to Israel, and fromchapter 10 how it also came tothe nations. As far as redemp-tion within the Church as theBody of Christ is concerned, there is no difference betweenJews and Gentiles. There isonly one body. Within thisbody there are no nationalities. This body is under perfectgrace and no longer under thelaw. That is why it says inGalatians 3:28, “Ye are all onein Christ Jesus.”

Do the promises (particular-ly concerning the land) applyfor Israel only for the millen-nial kingdom, or beyond itfor the new earth?Israel, to whom belong thepromises as a people, appearsto remain on the new earth, asIsaiah says in chapter 66:22,“For as the new heavens andthe new earth, which I will

make, shall remain before me,saith the Lord, so shall yourseed and your name remain.”The new Jerusalem that comesdown to the earth from heav-en, has a clear connection toIsrael, to the twelve tribes, portrayed by the twelve gatesand the twelve Jewish apos-tles. For this reason, I assumethat the promises for Israelalso apply to the new earth. The Church will reign withHim from heaven, and ofcourse have continual accessto the new earth.

What does it mean that Godwill be “all in all” at the endof spiritual history? When the Lord Jesus surren-ders the reign to God theFather, then all lordship andauthority will be annulled, forGod is “all in all.” I can imag-ine that then all differenceswill be removed, also the dif-ferences between Israel andthe Church. “And when allthings shall be subdued untohim, then shall the Son alsohimself be subject unto himthat put all things under him, that God may be all in all” (1Corinthians 15:28).(MR0716/792)

When reading Jeremiah 16, par-ticularly the first 13 verses,

one senses utter hopelessness anddejection. The Jews will be slain intheir own land, and their children“shall die of grievous deaths.”

Verse 9 points to the end of the fi-nal “Babylon,” which is in the workstoday: “For thus saith the Lord ofhosts, the God of Israel; Behold, Iwill cause to cease out of this placein your eyes, and in your days, thevoice of mirth, and the voice of glad-ness, the voice of the bridegroom,

and the voice of the bride.” Thatprophecy spelled the end of Israel asa national identity in the land of Is-rael.

But there is a distinct differencebetween Israel and the rest of theworld; here is what Revelation 18:23says: “And the light of a candle shallshine no more at all in thee; and thevoice of the bridegroom and of thebride shall be heard no more at allin thee: for thy merchants were thegreat men of the earth; for by thysorceries were all nations deceived.”

MIDNIGHT CALL

“Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the Lord, and they shall fish them; and after will I send formany hunters, and they shall hunt them from everymountain, and from every hill, and out of the holesof the rocks” (Jeremiah 16:16).

Israel

MIDNIGHT CALL

That will be the end of the commer-cial world—total chaos, similar towhat we have read about Israel. However, while the nations of theworld do not have a future, Israeldoes, as evident from Jeremiah16:15. This is also emphasized bythe prophets, particularly the 12 mi-nor ones, where we read of utterhopelessness for the nations of theworld, but at each instance hope forIsrael.

RegatheringAfter the prophet thunders utter de-struction, he speaks of the return:“But, The Lord liveth, that broughtup the children of Israel from theland of the north, and from all thelands whither he had driven them:and I will bring them again intotheir land that I gave unto their fa-thers. Behold, I will send for manyfishers, saith the Lord, and theyshall fish them; and after will I sendfor many hunters, and they shall

hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of theholes of the rocks” (Jeremiah 16:15-16).

Interestingly, the majority of theJewish immigrants came from thenorth, the former Soviet Union.

From the 37 founding membersof the Moetzet HaAm, (People’sCouncil), all but six originated pre-cisely from the north of Israel: theSoviet Union.

According to the Jewish VirtualLibrary, over 1,231,000 came fromthe former USSR, followed by Mo-rocco, Algeria, and Tunisia with354,852.

Based on the many news reports,anti-Semitism, which is a close rela-tive of anti-Zionism, is increasingglobally.

Thus, we come to the introduc-tory Scripture; it is the Lord who issending “fishers.” Who are thesefishers? Doubtless, the JewishAgency. Wikipedia states, “The

HaSochnut HaYehudit L’Eretz Yis-ra’el is the largest Jewish nonprofitorganization in the world. Its mis-sion is to ‘inspire Jews throughoutthe world to connect with theirpeople, heritage, and land, and em-power them to build a thriving Jew-ish future and a strong Israel.’”

Although there are a number ofother organizations and groupssupporting the return of Jews to Is-rael, they are of little to no measur-able effect when compared withthe Jewish Agency. This organiza-tion is responsible for bringingover 3 million immigrants to Israel.Any Jew, anywhere in the worldmay take advantage of the full sup-port of this agency, to be broughtto Israel and receive all the benefitsassociated with newcomers. TheJewish Agency has in the past andcontinues today to fulfill the words,“they shall fish them.”

Next comes something more un-pleasant: “…and after will I send formany hunters, and they shall huntthem from every mountain, andfrom every hill, and out of theholes of the rocks” (Jeremiah16:16b). Who are the “hunters”?

Categorically speaking, the entireworld.

According to Wikipedia, Jewishidentity in the Diaspora has be-come more and more difficult todetermine because of intermarriageand conversions. The highest esti-mate of the world Jewish popula-tion stands at 20 million;conservatively, however, it’s esti-mated at 14.2 million. What will bethe end? “But I have gathered themunto their own land, and have leftnone of them anymore there”(Ezekiel 39:28b). That will andmust happen in the final stages.

In recent years, we have been in-formed by the news media of ter-rorist acts particularly targetingJews in Europe.

A voice from Moscow, Rabbi Pin-chas Goldschmidt, had this to say:

Goldschmidt explained that “one

train is radical Islam and Islamic

terrorism... the other train is the

antisemitism of old Europe, the

extreme right.”

He told Parliament that both

are existential threats and are the

cause of “tens of thousands of

Israel

Jews leaving France, Belgium and

other European countries.”

This has resulted in a high per-

centage of people afraid to go to

Jewish events and synagogue on

holidays, he added.

Speaking with The Independent,

Goldschmidt stated that anti-

semitism in Europe is so rampant

that “40 percent of 1,200 Jews sur-

veyed in France said they avoided

wearing symbols that identified

them as Jews for fear of antisemit-

ic attacks.”

To confirm Rabbi Goldschmidt’sstatement, another important voice:

Martin Schultz, president of the

European Parliament, stated that

“when we see that the Jewish pop-

ulation in Europe has decreased

from almost four million in 1945 to

barely more than one million

today, then we know that it is high

time not only to make a clear polit-

ical statement, but to take effec-

tive action as soon as possible.”

statement quoted by Professor Laviereads: “The researchers and scientists ofthe Technion, including many talentedyoung people, are helping to situate Israelas a bold and original global laboratory atthe forefront of scientific development inthe world.” That is precisely what Israel istoday and why they can look forward, withconfidence, to the future.Moses reminds us of Israel’s future: “For

the Lord thy God blesseth thee, as hepromised thee: and thou shalt lend untomany nations, but thou shalt not borrow;

and thou shalt reign overmany nations, but they shallnot reign over thee”(Deuteronomy 15:6). 6365

threats from multiple directions. The Defense Ministry and the

IDF will gain hugely from theannual $3.8 billion they willreceive in American aid—upfrom $3.1b. under the current10-year agreement, which endsin 2017. So too will the jointIsraeli-US missile defense pro-grams, which will receive $400million of funding in the pack-age.

In contrast, local defense pro-duction will suffer, due to a newclause that cancels the authori-zation Israel had to spend 26.3%of the assistance on domesticcompanies.

All acquisitions using USmoney will henceforth have tobe made from American firms.

One local defense industrysource told The Jerusalem Postthat production lines in Israelare now under threat, and thatsome will have to be moved tothe US. The largest Israelidefense companies have copingmechanisms to soften the blow, such as setting up subsidiarieson US soil, and acting as sub-contractors in defense tendersthat Israel will grant American

companies. The larger firms will still take

a severe blow to their produc-tion lines in Israel.

Commentary: Israel is theonly country that must takedefense seriously. No othercountry is surrounded byhostile nations, some ofwhich openly proclaim theirintention to destroy thenation. The new Memorandum of

Understanding with the USreveals the highest defenseassistance ever for the nationof Israel. Yet, there is acatch: Israel will no longer beable to use these grants toenhance their own defenseindustries. Doubtless, Israelwill know how to handle thesituation, and—in the end—this most generous defenseassistance package from theUSA will be a double bless-ing for the nation.Nevertheless, we are

The Sunni-Arab AllyISRAEL

From its birth in 1948 to1973 Israel was involved infive wars with the Arabs. After Israel survived, mostArab countries maintainedtheir hostility, but slowlythings changed. The 1978Camp David Accordsbrought a tense but lasting peacewith Egypt.

In 1994 a peace treaty wassigned with Jordan. There waseven progress on the Palestinianfront. But that was the end of themove forward. Today Israel isrecognized by over 160 of 193countries, but only two of 22Arab countries, and sees noprogress on the Palestinian issue.

Now, however, we hear a differ-ent tone in the Arab world.Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah Sisihas revealed that he talks withPrime Minister Benjamin

Netanyahu “a lot.” Israel is evi-dently cooperating with Egypt inthe battle against Islamic funda-mentalists in the Sinai.

Jordan and Israel seemingly areprivately cooperating on a seriesof common issues and meetingfrequently.

The Iranian Grand Ayatollah Khameini deridedthe “heartless and murderous” Saudis who thendenounced the Iranians as “not Muslims.” WithIran moving toward developing nuclear weaponsand Shi’ites fighting Sunnis in Syria, Iraq, Libyaand Yemen, the Sunni Arab world feels vulnera-ble.

The Sunni Arab states are hampered by internalproblems, limited military budgets (save forSaudi Arabia) and relatively weak economies. The Sunni Arab world is largely poor save for theoil-rich sheikdoms. Egypt is at $3,200 GDP/capi-ta while Jordan is at $5,200. Even oil-rich SaudiArabia is at a modest $25,000, far less thanIsrael’s $37,000.

Swiss Lausanne University found that Israel, together with the United States, Russia, Chinaand India is one of the five leading high-techpowers in the world. This year Israel is receivingover $5b. dollars in foreign tech investment.

The Arab leaders are impressed by Israeli con-nections to the US and Russia. Over the pastdecade the US has provided Israel with $30b. ofweapons, with more to come. Commentary: Israel is a powerhouse tobe reckoned with. Their strength is intelli-gence. Not many countries, if any, canafford to withdraw themselves from hersource of knowledge when it comes toweapons of war or high-tech industry. While many countries have reservationsabout Israel, 160 of 193 nations have rec-ognized Israel and established diplomaticrelations. For those who claim that Israel is isolat-

ed, these facts and figures prove theopposite. However, our view must befrom prophetic perspectives. Psalm 2reads: “Why do the heathen rage, and thepeople imagine a vain thing? The kings ofthe earth set themselves, and the rulerstake counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let usbreak their bands asunder, and castaway their cords from us.” That is what isgoing on in the invisible world; thenations—all of them—are subject to thegod of this world, the prince of darkness, the father of lies, and will always standagainst the Lord and His Anointed. Wemust remember the words Jesus stated:

“Salvation is of the Jews.”That is not in the devil’sfavor. 6372(For more on Israel’s neighbors, read Democracy Invades Islam,ITEM #1072.)

Israeli academics have made aname for themselves across theworld for their intellectual know-how, but the very real brain drainthreat is compelling many toreturn.

Israel’s leading minds—its pro-fessors, researchers, scientists andentrepreneurs—can be foundpaving the way toward innovativediscoveries in countries aroundthe world.

Whether it is developing newtechnologies in Silicon Valley, orconducting ground-breaking sci-entific research at top internation-al institutions, winning NobelPrizes, or making life-savingadvances in the field of medicine,Israeli minds are at the forefront.

Yet despite many achieve-ments, Israel now has a messagefor these academics: “It is time tocome back home.”

The Israel National Brain Gainprogram, launched by the IsraelInnovation Authority (IAA) inJune 2013, in collaboration withthe Immigration and Absorption

Ministry, the Planning andBudgeting Committee of theCouncil for Higher Education andthe Finance Ministry, aims toaccomplish this goal and bringback Israel’s academic brainpow-er.

A recent Brain Gain survey, shared exclusively with the Post, found that the desire of an aca-demic to return to Israel begins todecrease after four years abroad.

The survey found that 78% ofIsraeli academics who have beenabroad for up to four years “talkabout or are thinking aboutreturning.” This number begins todecrease after four years to 60%,and after six years to 49%, hittinga low after 10 to 15 years abroadwhen only 33% of academicsthink about returning to Israel.

Nurit Eyal, director of the pro-gram, said that today the empha-

Commentary: This remindsthe writer of his experience in1959, on the way to Australiaaboard the Castel Felice. TheAustralian agent bluntly toldus, “If you intend to return, doso before five years are up;otherwise, you will find yourhomeland somewhat for-eign.”Today, Israelis are the most

experienced foreign travelersin the world, leaving Germansin second place. We empha-size, Israel is different; theJews have been dispersedthroughout the nations of theworld for about 2,000 yearsnow. They actually became

Egyptians, Iranians, Moroccans,Algerians, etc. Many becamea part of ancient history intheir new homelands, long, long before there was a USA.Today, the success of mod-ern Israel is an incentive toreturn. Why do Israelis travel so

much, more than anyone elseon the planet? This could beanswered with a simple state-ment: they are destined torule the world; subsequently, they are gathering experi-ences.What we do know from Holy

Scripture is that God will gath-er all the Jews back to theirland. That process has beenongoing now for over 120years, particularly since thefounding of the state of Israelin 1948. What is the aim?“And I will cause the captivityof Judah and the captivity ofIsrael to return, and will buildthem, as at the first. And I willcleanse them from all theiriniquity, whereby they havesinned against me; and I willpardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned,

spective? According to the boundaries givenin Scripture, Syria is mostly Arab-occupiedIsraeli territory. During Kind David’s time,Syria became subject to Israel: “Then Davidput garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and theSyrians became servants to David, andbrought gifts. And the Lord preserved Davidwhithersoever he went. And David took theshields of gold that were on the servants ofHadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem”(2 Samuel 8:6-7). That is definitely a con-

tributing factor relating toSyria’s chaos. 6384

The feet of a 4,000-year oldmonumental Egyptian statue hasbeen discovered in theCanaanite city of Hatzor, in whatis today northern Israel.

The archaeologists think thecomplete statue is about the sizeof a fully-grown man. The piecewith the stone feet is about 45 x40 centimeters in size and sits ona square base. It was found inthe ruins of the same building asa sphinx fragment of theEgyptian pharaoh Menkaure, who ruled Egypt in the 25th cen-tury BCE.

Hatzor is a key archaeologicalsite from the Biblical period, says Prof. Amnon Ben-Tor ofthe Hebrew University ofJerusalem, who has been dig-ging there for over 27 years(UNESCO declared Tel Hatzor aworld heritage site in 2005). Thefigure may have been a gift fromthe Egyptian pharaoh to the kingof Hatzor, who was apparentlythe most important king insouthern Canaan at the time.

Certainly, the Bible itself says so.-www.haaretz.com
