SUMMER 2025, SOMEWHERE NEAR PHOENIX, ARIZONA

EXT. BANDIT CAMP - NIGHT

Dirt goes flying through the air in every direction as aTIRELESS BANDIT slams his crudely made axe into thedestitute ground.

The tireless bandit looks off into the distance, squintingunder the full moon, his eyes peering into the barren anddesolate landscape laid out all around the filthy, wreckagefilled bandit camp.

MOZ (30), a wiry thin man with short brown hair and atattered blue shirt and jeans, crouches behind ahalf-destroyed car within the middle of the camp as heclosely observes the tireless bandit rip his axe out of theground.

The bandit drags his axe beside him as he begins walking

away from Moz.

Moz continues watching the tireless bandit until he reachesa small lit fire, with THREE BANDITS sleeping around theflickering flames.

The tireless bandit sits atop a crate beside the fire. Thebandit rests his axe alongside the crate as his weary eyesbegin to close.

Behind the tireless bandit Moz begins searching through thecamps belongings.

Within a crate, Moz finds a small black leather sack.

Moz looks over his shoulder to see if the tireless bandithas changed position. The tireless bandit closes his eyes.

Moz carefully opens the black leather sack.

Suddenly, Moz's eyes open wide as something within the sackcatches his attention.

MOZHe was right!

Moz falls back and hits some crates stacked up behind him.The top one falls off and hits the ground with a loudCRASH. The tireless bandit and his crew open their eyes.

The tireless bandit stands up gripping his axe tightly andfaces towards the direction of the fallen crate.

The tireless bandit sees Moz standing there across the smallcamp with the black leather sack held firmly within Moz'shands.

TIRELESS BANDIT(angrily)

Nobody steals from me. I'll cleavemy own arm off with this axe beforesomebody steals from me.

The tireless bandit lunges at Moz.

The tireless bandit's crew stagger from their sleep and grabtheir blunt weapons strewn about the ground.

Moz closes the black leather sack and slings it over hisshoulder.

Moz runs away with the bandits chasing after him. Thebandits shout at Moz with their weapons clutched in the airas Moz outruns the tireless bandit and his crew.

EXT. SMALL VILLAGE - DAWN

Three dark, nearly crumbling houses with the roofs

practically falling off stand apart from the vastlyinfertile and dry desert that surrounds them. Their windowsare completely barricaded by wooden planks.

Next to one of the houses is a small hut built from twolarge metal platings and a tire.

Early sunrise Moz leaves his hut with the black leather sackon his back.

Moz approaches one of the nearly wrecked houses near hishut.

The house is missing an entire section on the eastern sideand has a poorly built wooden door on the west.

Moz steps through the missing section of the wrecked house.

INT. SAM'S HOUSE - DAWN

Inside is a bunch of brown stacked crates on the three sideswith walls. Only one interior wall remains, with a fewcrates toppled over containing canned foods.

SAM, a skinny man with curly brown hair wearing a longsleeve jacket and beat up jeans, shakes his head from his

wooden stool.

SAMThere's a door you know.

MOZThought I would use the back. AndI hate knocking.

SAMYou're lucky I wasn't asleep still

cuz' if you woke me up I woulda'ended your life sooner than "TheShark" himself.

Moz lets out a smile, and Sam laughs in return.

Sam stands up and Moz approaches him. The pair exchange ahandshake and Sam notices the black leather sack in Moz's

possession.

SAMWhat's in the sack Moz?

Moz throws the black leather sack over his shoulder and setsit down on the wooden stool.

MOZMy father was right. It exists.

Moz opens up the black leather sack and rummages through itscontents. Sam looks quizzically over at Moz.

SAMYou haven't given up on this, haveyou? It's been what? Four years?

MOZSix.

Sam lets out a sigh. Moz looks over towards Sam'sdirection.

MOZYou don't understand. Now I

actually have proof Sam.

Moz looks back to the black leather sack and reaches insideto pull out a slightly worn circular-shaped silver trinket. On the trinket's center is a decorative emblem.

Moz excitedly hands the trinket to Sam. Sam inspects thetrinket and it's emblem on the center. Sam looks confused.

SAMWhere did you get this?

MOZHow you get anything these days.

SAMYou risk your life for food n'shit, Moz. Not useless trinketswith a bird on them holding ashield.

MOZIts an eagle, moron. And its amilitary symbol. Don't youremember anything before the damnfallout?

SAM (CONT'D)

Bird, eagle, I don't care if it'sthe fucking Statue of Liberty.

Sam looks down at the ground, then makes eye contact withMoz.

SAMDoes any of that shit reallymatter? I know how to survive, that's all that matters. I wasonly 16 anyway.

MOZ

Old enough. I was only two yearsolder than you, that doesn't makethat much a difference.

Moz angrily grabs the trinket away from Sam's hands.

MOZI thought you would at leastrecognize the military symbol.

SAM

Its hard to recognize anythinganymore.

Moz turns away from Sam and places the trinket back insidethe black leather sack. Moz pulls out a wrinkled brownishparchment, folded neatly within the sack.

MOZI hope you can at least recognizethis.

Moz hands the parchment over to Sam. Sam unfolds theparchment and inspects its contents. Moz studies Sam's

reaction as he unimpressively hands the parchment back toMoz.

SAM(sarcastically)

I can see it's a map to somewhere. Can't read the shit on the backthough.

MOZ (CONT'D)Look at the back closer.

Moz shows the reverse side of the parchment, with the samemilitary symbol as the silver trinket. The parchment alsocontains directions written in French.

Moz turns back over the wrinkled parchment and points at themountains.

MOZ (CONT'D)The directions lead to a spot inthe Rockies. My father was right. It exists.

Moz begins to fold the parchment back up very cautiously.

Moz finishes folding the parchment and places it back withinthe black leather sack.

MOZ(ecstatically)

Six years of searching, Sam! I can

finally finish what my fatherstarted!

Pause.

SAM (CONT'D)Moz, you can't be serious? Thebase is a myth, just like "TheShark".

Moz furiously grabs the black leather sack and exits out ofSam's house.

Sam groans.

SAM (CONT'D)Dammit.

Sam chases after Moz.

EXT. SMALL VILLAGE - DAWN

Moz storms away from Sam's house.

Sam catches up to Moz and gets in front of his way, outstretching his arms.

SAMMoz, you can't really think itexists just because of a map andsome trinket.

Moz stops. Sam lets down his arms. Moz becomes infuriated.

MOZ(angrily)

My father didn't get killed because

of some fucking myth, Sam.

SAM(agitatedly)

I didn't say that. What I said wasthat...

Moz interrupts Sam.

MOZI know what you said. The base isreal, Sam. I know it. My fatherwas right.

SAMThen why didn't your savior go andfind the base for himself?

MOZ (CONT'D)(furiously)

Because he was too busy trying to

unite idiots like you.

TIM, a tall and muscular man with dark shades on top of hisbald head and a bright red shirt with ripped sleeves, opensthe wooden door connecting to his nearly wrecked house.

Tim peaks his head out and hears Moz and Sam arguing in thedistance.

MOZHow long do you think you cansurvive out here anyway?

SAMLonger than trying to find somefantasy land in the mountains. Youreally think your over your fear?Bullshit, you'll turn the secondyou see a fucking ant hill!

Tim exits the doorway he was eavesdropping from and

approaches Moz and Sam cautiously as they continue to argue.

MOZIt's worth trying, isn't it? Oryou afraid "The Shark" will getyou?

SAMHe's more a myth than your "Eden inthe Mountains"!

arguing about this damn earlyanyway?

Tim makes eye contact with Sam. Sam remains expressionless, and looks down at the ground again. Moz shakes his head.

TIMSomething about fantasy land?

SAM(sarcastically)

Moz's expertise.

Moz looks over at Sam disgustedly.

MOZI know you thought my father wasfull of it, but now...

Sam interrupts Moz.

SAMHaving some junk plate with astupid bird symbol and a map withthe same stupid bird symbol doesn'tmean anything!

MOZWhy not at least see if it's fake?Who would go through all thistrouble to write this?

SAMProbably the same nut job who wants

to go on this treasure chest huntto begin with.

Tim looks at Moz and Sam impatiently.

TIMAgain, what the hell are you twotalking about?

MOZAre you saying I wrote this?

SAM

Convenient it's written in alanguage you happen to understand.

MOZSo because its written in Frenchthis map is fake and I'm a liar?

SAMI never said you were a liar, youjust have your priorities out ofwack.

Page 9: Decay Sample

MOZOut of wack? You want to stay inthis shithole?

Tim looks harshly at Moz.

TIM

Hey! This shithole is more thanmost people have!

Sam nods excitedly.

SAMIts the shithole everyone wants tobe at!

Moz, Sam, and Tim look around themselves and their small,run-down little village.

One of the roofs collapses to the the ground in a loud BANG.

Pause.

MOZWhat a fucking paradise.

Moz, Sam, and Tim all burst into laughter.

INT. SAM'S HOUSE - DAY

The map is laid out on the ground. Moz studies intently atthe ground where the map is. Sam sits from his woodenstool, looking past Moz at Tim.

Tim looks down at Moz then looks back up at Sam. Timscratches and shakes his head.

TIMEven if it's real, I don't see howwe could ever make it all the wayto the Rockies.

Moz looks up and stares at Sam for a moment. Moz looks overtowards Tim's direction.

MOZThat's why we need to stop atPhoenix first.

Sam's face turns pale.

SAMNo way. I ain't ever going back

Page 10: Decay Sample

there, Moz. I told you that, don'tyou remember?

MOZThat was so long ago Sam, give me abreak. I bet she isn't even thereanymore.
