DEC - JAN NEWSLETTER

1

This month two friends and I did something we hadn’t done for a long time by taking a train trip. I thinkthe last time I travelled on a long distance train in SA I was wearing a uniform and the ticket had beenpaid for by the state!

Anyway it proved to be great fun. I don’t hold any brief for the Shosholoza Meyl but all in all it was avery enjoyable experience and we had a great time. Make no mistake there are MANY areas forimprovement but the overall experience was a positive one and elsewhere in this newsletter thereshould be an article providing a little more insight into exactly what went on.

This newsletter will be the last for 2013 and serves to cover the period December and January whenhopefully we will return refreshed and inspired to produce the next issue. Please send us some articlesand contributions for the newsletter as we are constantly in need of new material.

There is quite a lot happening in and around the club over the season ahead starting with our Yearend Run to Kenjara on the 8th and a Festive Season Club Sunday on the 29th December. The MilkBar will continue to operate on Friday evenings so we are around. Your chairman will be away fromaround 16 December to 4 January but there will be a number of members who will be around to keepall the wheels oiled and turning.

We have been pleased by the steady trickle of new members and I must remind you that all membersshould continuously be on the lookout for people who would like to join us and add to our numbersas we do lose members throughout the year to transfers mortality and other reasons. Existing membersare the best source of new members so please keep up the active recruitment of friends and familyyou think may enjoy what we do.

Otherwise the club is functioning well and with the few improvements to the facilities which we areplanning I am very optimistic about the year ahead and with your support we can continue to growfrom strength to strength.

All that remains is for me to wish you and your families wherever they are a Blessed Festive Seasonand a safe time in whatever it is that will occupy your days in the season ahead. I look forward to 2014with great enthusiasm and trust that your membership of one of the finest clubs of its kind in our countrywill continue to be an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

Until next month happy motoring and be safe out there.

Ian Holmes.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN’S DESK

1930 Chrysler 6c, one of only two in South Africa, belonging to club member Aylwin Stephenson.

This month we extend a very warm welcome to 2 newmembers. Firstly, hello to John Thompson who lives in Benoniwith his wife and a garage full of machinery includingChevrolet, Chrysler, Buick, Ford, Dodge and Jaguar. As wellas a Rambler Ambassador. Then also a hello to Helmut Wolffwho lives in Rivonia with Nita and an Alfa GTV and a Porsche.Helmut also has a collection of about 60 model cars rangingfrom 1920 to 1940 as well as a few 1:18 scale vehicles.Sounds most intriguing. This just proves my point that younever can tell what goes on behind closed doors!

Just a note re the November 24 Sunday meeting, althoughthe theme for the day is “Veteran Cars & Bikes”, could I askall the members with the older vehicles to make a specialeffort to crank up the ol’ girl (car/bike not wife!) and comealong. There are a bunch of, let’s say, pre 1930 vehicleswe’ve not seen for ages, and it would be great to see themin the parking again. They don’t need to be clean, just runningwill be fine!

The December 29th meeting will be the usual Sunday whereyou bring out the vehicle that is closest to the garage door, that is the least fuss to drive. Head for the club for the mincepie and “medicinal”(brandy) either in the pie or the coffee.

So, lastly let me just wish you all a Yummy Holiday Seasonhowever you are going to do it and drive with care. Dairiesthe 15th of January 2014 for the Chairman’s Party. This timethe club will be providing some tasty treats, so just comealong and have a chatty evening.

Till next year, Have fun Vintage Motoring, Noel.

Please join us on Friday evenings at the club, in the “Milk Bar” for a few rounds!

SAVVA Technical Tip – Electric fans

The hot weather is with us again, or just around the corner, hurrah, but think of yourcherished oldie – they don’t appreciate the warm weather like we do.

Our older cars were never made to sit in the heavy traffic we experience today and theold fan turning at idling speed isn’t going to help very much. One needs a good gust of

wind through the radiator to keep it cool - which can only be accomplished by the fitting of anelectric fan.I’ve just had a radiator cleaned out and whilst it was out I thought it may be worthwhile investigatingthe possibility of converting to an electric fan and the cost thereof. A trip to the local Silvertonradiator shop soon answered my curiosity. The proprietor knew exactly what I required and placedin front of me a fan switch (thermostat) and a brass receptacle that needed to be soldered intothe bottom of the radiator. They apparently do this on a regular basis.

Installation of the electric fan is very simple and no special expertise is required. You must howevercheck how much space you have available at either side of the radiator then decide which type ofelectric fan would best fit - a “push” or “pull” fan. Pull fans as used in most front wheel drive carsand are obtainable from most spares outlets. Push fans can be a bit difficult to find - the bestsource are the car aircon dealers they carry them in stock. They usually come in 10”12”14” sizes. The cost of a 10” is around R310.00. A warning however - the contacts in the thermostat switchesare extremely light and cannot take much current so it is imperative that a relay be used – atleast 35 amps or even heavier if you can find one.

Attached is a picture of a typical thermostat switch and the brass receptacle (socket) which fitsinto the bottom of the radiator. The black unit is analternative receptacle which can be fitted into thebottom hose (rather than taking the radiator out)and takes the standard thermostat switch.

If you can’t find these sockets in your part of theworld they are available from Silverton’s inGreymont, Johannesburg and sell for R150.00 each.

They can be ordered by contacting them on011 022 7056 or 078 633 4770.

Total cost of an installation, including theswitch, socket, relay and the fan, should bebetween R500.00 and R600.00.

DJ 2014The next DJ is well in hand under the capable leadership of Peter Hall and his team.

The event will take place over two days starting at Hillcrest in Natal on 7 March and finishing at a newvenue, the Turffontein Race Track in the South of Johannesburg on 8 March 2014. The event hasreverted to an up-run again and the two day format has also returned.

The prizegiving breakfast on Sunday morning for competitors will also be held there next year and thisshould be most enjoyable.

Regulations are out and entries are coming in steadily. The Regs and Entry forms are available onboth the SAVVA website as well as ours at vintageandveteranclub.co.za as well as on a number ofother club sites. It is always advisable to get your entry in as early as possible as this also assists theorganizers.

Once again this will be an international event and will attract a large number of entrants so entertimeously to avoid disappointment.

Peter and his team have listened to a number of experienced competitors and have done their bestto incorporate the good suggestions into the event so this promises to be another very enjoyable andwell run DJ.

As always spectators are much appreciated at the end so as soon as you get t=your 2014 diary goingmark the finish of the DJ on Saturday afternoon the 8th March 2014.

Much has been written in the past and still will be about the absolute splendour and overwhelmingspectacle that the Goodwood Revival Meeting offers. The Racing, the shows the air displays and somuch more certainly cause me to experience what I can only term as absolute spectacle (pun intended)overload. Just to give some insight to those who may not have been to one I want to focus on oneaspect only in this item and that is the Car Park as one arrives at the event. It has become a tradition and practice that anyone who arrives at the festival in an old vehicle may parkcloser to the entrance than the modern ones and it is this car park that is the topic of this article.

Before one even enters the main area the one passesthrough the parking area reserved for older cars andwhat a festival of old vehicles that is. It is a bit like ClubSunday at VVC but only 100 times bigger! I wasabsolutely arrested by the variety of amazing old vehiclesparked there and will attempt to share some insights intothe car park at Goodwood. So two club members madetheir way through the car park and first of all stoppedwhere they say cars they both own and posednext to these.

Another fascinating car was a late model Model T Fordwhich had been driven from Europe and had a sign init saying that it was “As found” and that the owner hadno intention of reducing its value by restoring it! It wascomplete with wool coming out of the seats but appearedto have made the trip from Europe in fine shape.

Elsewhere around the T can be seen many interesting cars from the mundane to the sublime.

This splendid Jaguar was in great company as were so many others.

All in all the car park took a good deal of ourtime before we even reached the entrance not tospeak of the absolutely amazing variety of stallsselling anything from period clothing to those rarebuts for our cars that we only dream about findingin SA. Racing windscreens mirrors electricalcomponents and so many other items to lighten thepurse at R16.00 to the Pound. Price of course is onlyone of the considerations another being “how can Iget it home?”

Having been lucky and privileged enough to have been to both a Festival of Speed and a Revival atGoodwood I can only be amazed and so grateful to those who made it possible. It is indeed an spectaclethat every old car lover would absolutely amazed by and if you ever get the chance, do it!!

FROM ABROADWe have a very enthusiastic member in America in the form of Sandy and Dee Mitchell and they always

are so gracious in offering hospitality to SA motor enthusiasts. Below is an email from them and anyone

wishing to go there to attend the Hershey show is welcome to contact me, your Chairman to set

something up.

Hello friends

It has been a year since last communicating with everyone. So, I thought I would give an update on

what is happening in the Mitchell household since then.

Being an avid fan of FB, especially sites that are vintage car related, I began communicating with vintage

car buffs in Mexico and South America and naturally, I received invitations to come and visit. I was

somewhat apprehensive because of my very limited knowledge of spanish. However, most of them

spoke fluent English.. With that, I turned to my wife Dee and said. "I'm heading off to Bogota and Cali

Colombia. Naturally she said "WHAT?????" I replied. " yeah " I'm gonna fly down to Cali to attend the

monthly meeting of the vintage VW club plus I'm bored." After a litte heated discussion to put it mildly

I went on line and purchased the tickets. Leaving her with our neighbor in Florida who has a winter

home, I boarded the flight from Orlando to Ft Lauderdale and on to Bogota and Cali Colombia. Arriving

in Cali, I was greeted by Luis and Maria Velez who were my hosts. Luis was the president of the local

vintage VW Club in Cali. I stayed with Luis and Maria for three days in Cali and of course I attended

their monthly meeting where I met other club members who brought their vintage VW's to the meeting.

The meeting was held outdoors in the CBD of Cali along the river which is also a park that runs thru

Cali. Cafe's line the river. A delightful meeting was held filled with laughter of Spanish and English. The

following night, I was invited to attend a small gathering with the Classic Car Club of Cali as a guest

of thier president Jacobo Vaisman. Again it was at another outside cafe along the river beer pizza and

local Colombian food filled the tables. The next evening the boys and I visited several collections of

club members. One in particular had stunning collection of British cars notably MGs. Everymoring when

I got up, I would stand on the balcony of the apartment of Luis and Maria's and gaze at the beauty of

the Andes which were towering over Cali to the west. During the day the heat was almost unbearable.

I was sweating like a %%%%%. however the locals didn't seem to mind. Upon returning to the states

I realized why as Cali is located only 200 miles from the equator and the northern reaches of the

Amazon. After a delightful three days, it was on to Bogota where my good friend Camilo Hernandez

of the Renault R 4 Club fetched me. Bogota was the extreme as far as climate. very cool as it is more

than 5000 feet above sea level. It is a town of 7 million Colombians. It is the cultural capital of Northern

South America where as Buenos Aires Argentina is considered the "Paris of southern South America.

I attended the Renault club meeting with Camilo and met many other vintage car friends. We also

went to several other club members homes to view thier collections. what a wonder 10 days with my

'brothers' in Colombia. But as with all good things it came to an end and I was bound for Florida and

on to Detroit. here are a few photos of the boys of the VW Club.

Stanley Henry Wesselink was born in Pretoria 1934 and went to school at Pretoria Boys High School.

He qualified as a Quantity Surveyor in Pretoria and then moved to Johannesburg in 1960 the year his firstson was born, to start his own practice.

He always shared an office with Pierre Kelfkins a fellow Quantity Surveyor and the first Chairman of theFerrari Club. Stan and Pierre were as far as I can determine the founders of South African Ferrari OwnersClub known as SEFAC, which has the distinction of being the oldest Ferrari club anywhere.

The Club name was derived from the name Enzo Ferrari gave his to his organisation, namely ScuderioEnzo Ferrari Auto Course, before it was changed to Ferrari SpA when Fiat took an interest in the companyin 1969. This name was modified by Pierre and Stan to Southern Equatorial Ferrari Automobile Club.

During one European tour to the two of them talked their way into an audience with Enzo Ferrari in Modena. An audience is the correct terminology as at that time you had an audience with the Pope or Enzo.

Stan was not a one-make-car-man and he owned a number of other cars including a very early Vauxhallwhich he restored himself. He also owned a number of motorcycles including heavy metal like Motoguzzisand MV Augustas. Notwithstanding his passion for fast motorbikes, Ferraris were Stan’s first love.

Stan also found time to race a 1961 Porsche RS 61 Spyder which had previously belonged to Dr DawieGous and in which Dawie won numerous races in Southern Africa. In this car Stan won races at Kyalamiand the Krugersdorp Hill Climb .Some of us well remember the car as sometimes Stan would arrive atFerrari meetings in this noisy little car.

Incidentally this car was recently sold in the States for US $ 880,000 and Stan’s ownership and racingsuccesses were mention of as part of the cars provenance.

Asked by son Coenie if he perhaps regretted that he had sold the cars, he replied in his typical quietdignified manner -” I wasn't sorry – I didn't own them because they were worth money – I owned thembecause I loved them” .

Stan was also an enthusiastic writer and at one time wrote a Classic Bike Column for Simon Fourie's BikeSA. He also participated in Veteran Bike Rallies including the DJ. He was in fact the first Clerk of Coursefor the Commemorative Run in 1970 and was honoured at the Cocktail Party this year for that achievement. For his 1st attempt at the DJ, some years later, Stan restored a 1934 Triumph, a 550cc single. He had agood 1st day's run but then could not start the bike for the second leg into JHB; the shellac in the magnetohad melted and seized the magneto.Stan was a motorcar enthusiast but not ridiculously loyal to a brand or individual cars - for him it was aboutthe experience of owning and driving them and then he was happy to move on. He honeymooned in a FiatTopolino, owned 3 Ferraris and drove a 300SE Mercedes as his last car. His first motorbike was the Triumph550 and after Moto Guzzi 'T', MV Augusta Super America he ended with a R100RS BMW.

Stan once owned a 1913 D type Vauxhall which was probably the only pre-WW1 'D' type in the world. Stan'sfather was a coach builder on the railways and together with Stan they built the wooden ribs for the bodyworkof the car which had not survived - using old photos of the car. The car was bought by Noel Mcintosh whoamongst other things drove it from Moscow to Vladivostok. He also had a 1919 Vauxhall.

Stan will be remembered as a regularly attendee at the VVC Sunday club house meetings. There he could be found sitting at one of the round tables in the milk bar, always able to relate knowledgeablestories about early Johannesburg and early motoring.

Stanley is survived by his present wife Colleen, his previous wife Caroline who is the mother of his children.Three sons who all live in the Cape and one daughter who lives in Australia.Stan owned a 1913 D type Vauxhall which was probably the only pre-WW1 'D' type in the world.

Stan you will be missed.Robert van Zyl and Coenie Wesselink.

CLUB SUNDAY JOKE

Jim wanted a job as a signalman on the railways.

At the job interview the inspector asked him this question: "What would you do if you saw 2 trainsheading for each other on the SAME track??Jim said: "I would put all signals to danger" "What if they were going too fast?", asked theinspector. Jim said," I would switch the points for one of the trains." "What if the lever broke?",asked the inspector. "Then I'd dash down the signal box steps waving a red flag", said Jim."Whatif it blew away in the wind?" asked the inspector. "Then I'd run back into the signal box & phonethe next signal box." "What if the phone was engaged?" "Well.....in that case," persevered Jim,"I'd rush down out of the box & use the public emergency phone at the level crossing." "Whatwould you do if THAT was vandalized?" "Oh well, then I'd run into the village & get my UncleHarry." This puzzled the Inspector, "Why would you do that?" "Because he's never seen a traincrash!!"
