Recipe Tin Project: Pecan Cookie Balls

When I pul led th is handwritten recipe out of the

old recipe tin, I was intrigued. There was no title, just five simple ingredients, and a very short jumble of instructions. After looking over the ingredients: butter, flour, sugar, pecans, I figured that this recipe was for something similar to Mexican Wedding Cakes (which I’ve always loved) and so this card moved to the top of the stack of “must makes” for the Recipe Tin Project.

The Recipe Tin Project, as I fondly call it, is a little project where I am cooking my way through an old tin of handwritten recipes. It’s chock full of old recipe cards – most of which seem to be from the ’60s and ’70s – and there are everlasting classics like Chocolate Cake and some not so timeless creations like Jellied Chicken Gumbo.

These little cookie balls fall into the “classics” category of that tin. They’re buttery and crumbly and ridiculously easy. I’m a little bit in love with them.

I was right in that they are like Mexican Wedding Cakes. They’re sweet, dense little pecan-speckled balls that are genius in their simplicity and utility. They are made of only five ingredients (six if you count the powdered sugar for dusting) and I doubt that there is an easier cookie out there to make.

The recipe card looks to me like something someone quickly jotted down to hand to a friend, forgetting the title and not even taking time to flush out the instructions. My guess is said friend took a bite of these and requested the recipe and the recipe was so simple that the woman scribbled it down from memory. She says to use “any amount of chopped pecans,” which made me smile. I found 1 cup to be the perfect amount.

The ease of these sweet little spheres makes them perfect for holiday cookie parties or bake sales… this recipe makes A LOT. They’re entirely too poppable though, and they’ll be gone before you know it. A light dusting of powdered sugar is just the thing to surround their buttery, crumbly center; it contrasts so well with the salty, nutty pecans. These Pecan Cookie Balls are a total winner, and I know I’ll be making them again and again throughout the years. This is definitely one to add to your own recipe box.

INGREDIENTS: 20 minutes to prepare serves 243 cups all-purpose flour1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened1/2 cup granulated sugar1 cup pecans, chopped

The Chamber would like to thank the community for their support this past year and also our twenty-two Board Members who give their time on various committees to accomplish all that we do.

We presented Assemblyman Bill Magee the Member of the Year Award for out-standing service to our county. He has been a long standing member of the Chamber and attends many of our events.

We presented Cazenovia College as Business of the Year for their outstanding service to the community with students and events. They have donated services and manpower for our many events as well as sitting on Chamber committees.

Guest speakers were Kurt Wheeler sharing Village updates and Molly Hagan sharing changes at the High School.

“Yes, you are rather heavy for a long journey,” acknowledged the Ork, “but you might eat of those lavender berries and become so small that I could carry you with ease.”

This quaint suggestion startled Trot, and she looked gravely at the speaker while she considered it, but Cap’n Bill gave a scornful snort and asked, “What would become of us afterward? We wouldn’t be much good if we were some two or three inches high. No, Mr. Ork, I’d rather stay here as I am than be a hop-o’-my-thumb somewhere else.”

“Why couldn’t you take some of the dark purple berries along with you to eat after we had reached our destination?” inquired the Ork. “Then you could grow big again whenever you pleased.”

Trot clapped her hands with delight. “That’s it!” she exclaimed. “Let’s do it, Cap’n Bill.”

The old sailor did not like the idea at first, but he thought it over carefully, and the more he thought the better it seemed. “How could you manage to carry us if we were so small?” he asked.

“I could put you in a paper bag and tie the bag around my neck.”

“But we haven’t a paper bag,” objected Trot. The Ork looked at her. “There’s your sunbonnet,” it said

presently, “which is hollow in the middle and has two strings that you could tie around my neck.”

Trot took off her sunbonnet and regarded it critically. Yes, it might easily hold both her and Cap’n Bill after they had eaten the lavender berries and been reduced in size.

THE SCARECROW of OZBy L. Frank Baum

CHAPTER 5 - THE LITTLE OLD MAN OF THE ISLAND - ContinuedCap’n Bill had said he could make a raft of the trees big

enough to float them all, but he had no tools except those two pocketknives, and it was not possible to chop down trees with such small blades.

“And s’pose we got afloat on the ocean,” said Trot, “where would we drift to and how long would it take us to get there?”

Cap’n Bill was forced to admit he didn’t know. The Ork could fly away from the island any time it wished to, but the queer creature was loyal to his new friends and refused to leave them in such a lonely, forsaken place. It was when Trot urged him to go on this fourth morning that the Ork had his happy thought. “I will go,” said he, “if you two will agree to ride upon my back.”

“We are too heavy. You might drop us,” objected Cap’n Bill.

Cazenovia Public Library to Host Winter-Themed

“Art for Kids” Program Children ages 8-14 are invited to join Pat Hill and Jenna

Wright Martin at the Cazenovia Public Library for a festive, winter-themed Art for Kids! The next installment of the hands-on program series will be held Friday, December 14 at 1:30 pm in the Community Room. Discussion and activities will focus on the winter scenes published by Currier & Ives—America’s longest running printmaking firm.

The New York City-based firm was founded by Nathaniel Currier in 1835. In 1852, James Merritt Ives joined the business as a bookkeeper; five years later he became a full partner. In operation until 1907, Currier & Ives specialized in the production of hand-colored lithographs. The prints were made from the work of in-house artists as well as some of the most celebrated artists of the day. Currier & Ives prints, which captured a variety of images of American life, were among the most popular wall hangings of 19th century America.

During the December Art for Kids, participants will examine several seasonal Currier & Ives prints, learn about lithography, and create their own 3D winter scenes. Each child is asked to bring a shoebox for the project. All other materials will be provided. Class size is limited to ensure program quality. Call or stop by the Library to reserve a spot.

Participants will qualify for the chance to win a beautiful art set donated by a good friend of the Library. The kit contains 178 pieces, including colored markers, crayons, colored pencils, watercolor cakes, oil pastels, acrylic paint tubes, and much more—all arranged in a beautiful wooden case with adjustable trays.
