When asked what her goals and vision are for SHORE’s future, Debora replied, “I look forward to working with a strong team of staff and Board Members that will enable us to address the challenges and opportunities SHORE is currently facing. As the State continues to be unresponsive to fully supporting or reimbursing the services we provide, we need to further diversify our revenue sources and expand the scope of our current programs and services. Our efficiency and effectiveness of staff time needs to increase through the use of current technologies and support systems. Establishing corporate partners to assist in meeting our mission will be essential. With a staff now dedicated to coordinating volunteers, SHORE can strengthen and grow our community of volunteers to assist in a variety of venues. Finding a new home for the Lois Lloyd Center – Adult Services Program currently in Evanston, will be at the forefront of our planning for the next couple years. As for the future of SHORE, like all successful businesses, will be based on listening to the individuals we serve and other stakeholders and offering services that the community needs. Through increasing our visibility in the community and building collaborations with other entities, SHORE will better serve the individuals and the community as a whole.” Congratulations Debora and the best of luck in your new position!

SHORE Receives 3-Year

CARF Accreditation

In early March, several programs/services were surveyed

by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation

Facilities (CARF), which is a prestigious international

accreditating agency. As a result of the three day survey,

the agency was awarded the highest level of

accreditation - a three year accreditation that runs

through April 2015. This marks the 14th consecutive

three year accreditation that the agency has been

awarded.

The areas that were accreditated include: Community

Housing, Community Integration, and Community

Employment Services: Job Development, Job Supports,

Job-Site Training and Organizational Employment

Services.

CARF stated, “SHORE Community Services demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality throughout the organization. The consistent satisfaction of the stakeholders is an indicator of the organization’s interest in meeting the needs of the persons served. A committed team of board members and staff facilitates individualized supports. Regular updates are provided to the board, and there are numerous effective mechanisms for internal and external communication. Persons served, funders and other stakeholders express a high degree of satisfaction with services that allow persons served to experience and participate in an array of training and employment programs and housing opportunities that enhance personal growth. The leadership and staff members are dedicated to the mission of the organization and work tirelessly to achieve the highest quality.” The agency received only one recommendation out of over 1100 standards. If you get a chance, please thank the staff and board for their continuous efforts to ensure that only the highest quality programs and services are provided through the guidance of standards that are administered through CARF.

Annual Appeal Update

From the kickoff of the Annual Appeal on November 1st, which is the agency’s largest direct mail campaign, $111,432 has been raised from over 322 generous donors. The goal set by the Board is $115,000, so we are $3,568 shy of the goal. The funds raised are used to enhance the programs and services provided to nearly 400 children and adults served by the agency. It is not too late to contribute because the appeal ends June 30th – the last day of the fiscal year. Please help us reach our goal. Special acknowledgement is extended to all our supporters of this appeal. Significant gifts have been received from the following: an anonymous company, Mrs. W. Arthur Buehler - A Super Senior

Mr. Arthur G. Buehler, member of SHORE’s Board of Directors, was recently recognized by the North Shore Senior Center as a “Super Senior.” A luncheon was held on May 24th at the center and awards were given out afterwards. To be a “Super Senior,” an individual must be a volunteer for a local organization and be nominated for their outstanding services.

Since 1980, Mr. Buehler has been a SHORE Board Member. He served as Board President from 1989-2005 and continues to serve on a number of committees. As President, Mr. Buehler oversaw tremendous growth of the agency. For over 25 years he has been an active volunteer at the agency’s re-sale shop called Second Time Around Thrift & Gift Shop in Skokie. In 2002, SHORE honored Mr. Buehler, and his late wife Joyce, with the Thomas and Lois Lloyd Humanitarian Award for their dedication and commitment to improving the quality of life for persons with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. A group home called SHORE Homes East was re-named the Buehler House in their honor. The Buehler’s late son Eric lived at this home. Additionally, Mr. Buehler was a Boy Scout Leader and a member of the Northbrook Civic Foundation. Congratulations Art!

Volunteers Needed at Resale Shop

& For Picking Up Items

The agency’s re-sale shop, Second Time Around Thrift and Gift Shop, needs volunteers. Solely volunteers run the shop and we need your help to fill in shifts at the shop, which is located at 4123 Oakton Street in Skokie. Hours of operation are Tuesday and Friday 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 12:00-4:00 p.m. Monday the shop is closed for re-stocking and volunteers can assist with this as well. Volunteers typically work 2-4 hour shifts and even once or twice a month is acceptable.

The shop is a community resale “boutique” offering gently used women, men and children’s clothing, jewelry, accessories, books, kitchenware, linens, decorative items, small furniture, vintage items and more. Best part is that all proceeds from the shop benefit SHORE.

In addition, SHORE is seeking a core of volunteers that could help Dan Lloyd, Volunteer, pick-up items from church rummage sales, retirement communities, local businesses and even private donors. Must be able lift, carry, load and unload items. Time frame varies from 1-3 hours and help may not be needed more than once or twice a month. All items picked-up are sold at the re-sale shop.

Please contact Meridith Murray, Board President and Volunteer Shop Manager at (847) 673-3172 or visit www.shores2ndtime.com for more information. Helping at the shop or with the pick-up will go a long way towards generating much-needed funds for the agency.

New Staff

SHORE would like to introduce a few of our newest staff members, which includes: Allison Cobert, Georgette Smith and Michelle Ess. In January, Allison Cobert started as the Event & Volunteer Coordinator. She will be working in the Development Department and is responsible for planning and implementing all special events, coordinating volunteers and other fundraising duties. Georgette Smith began as a Temp in January for the Accounting Department and was hired full-time as the Accounts Payable/Payroll Clerk in March. Michelle Ess was hired in March as the Program Manager at Buehler House/SHORE Homes East. Welcome!

Car Donations Accepted

Did you know SHORE accepts used cars? Since July, five cars were donated to the agency and $2,250 was raised from the sales. Vehicles that no longer run are accepted and tax credit is given as is allowable by law. For more information please contact the Development Department at (847) 982-2030 ext. 11 or 21.

Brittni Grace – Outstanding Volunteer

Since August 2011, Brittni Grace has been working full-time as a Developmental Trainer at SHORE’s Joseph Koenig, Sr. Training Center. What makes this significant is that she has volunteered to work in this position for one year through a program offered by the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC).

The mission of the JVC offers women and men an opportunity to work full-time for justice and peace. Jesuit Volunteers are called to the mission of serving the poor directly, working for structural change in the United States, and accompanying people in developing countries. The challenge to Jesuit Volunteers is to integrate Christian faith by working and living among the poor and marginalized, by living simply and in the community with other Jesuit Volunteers, and by examining the causes of social injustice. Since 1956 the JVC has worked in collaboration with Jesuits, whose spirituality the volunteers incorporate in their work, community, and prayer life. The JVC offers the volunteers a year or more of experience that will open their minds and hearts to live always conscious of the poor, committed to the Church’s mission of promoting justice in the service of faith.

Brittni stated, “I really value the JVC focus on volunteering with non-profits. She picked SHORE because she is interested in working with the population we serve.”

Brittni’s primary job responsibility as a Developmental Trainer is to supervise a group of 14 individuals at the training center. She trains them on packaging and assembly jobs, checks their quality and tracks the payroll. Everyone in her group has an Individual Program Plan and Brittni implements each person's goals; training them on a variety of skills such as pro-social behavior, functional academics, and good work habits, to name a few.

Anni Braverman, Rehabilitation Coordinator, stated, “Brittni continues to excel in her position as Developmental Trainer. She is committed to the mission of SHORE and providing quality services. Brittni has supervised and motivated her trainees to do their best to complete as much work as possible while maintaining quality. She has also facilitated goals from individual plans and contributed to the progress of the trainees. Brittni is a team player, flexible, helpful and positive.”

Brittni obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from McMurry University in Abilene, Texas in 2010. Her work experience includes one year as a Residential House Manager at Breakenridge Village in Texas. Brittni was responsible for the care of six women with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. By the first week in August, Brittni will complete her year of service. She plans to return to Texas where employment in the area of working with individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities will be pursued. Thank you Brittni for your dedicated service to SHORE. We wish you well in all your future endeavors.

Ticket to Work

SHORE's Joseph Koenig, Sr. Training Center is an Employment Network (EN) for the Ticket to Work Program, which provides most people receiving Social Security benefits (beneficiaries) more choices for receiving employment services. Under this program, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues tickets to eligible beneficiaries who, in turn, may choose to assign those tickets to an Employment Network (EN) of their choice to obtain employment services, vocational rehabilitation services, or other support services necessary to achieve a vocational (work) goal. The EN, if they accept the ticket, will coordinate and provide appropriate services to help the beneficiary find and maintain employment. If you have a Ticket and you are interested in being considered for assistance with gaining community employment call Anni Braverman, Rehabilitation Coordinator, at (847) 581-0200 x 33.

Pizzamania The Kiwanis Club of Evanston held their annual fundraising event called “Pizzamania” on February 21st, which was “Fat Tuesday” at Giordano’s in Evanston. The venue was held at a new location, 1527 Chicago Avenue and the larger space helped in accommodating the over 300 people attending the event. For four hours, Kiwanis members and student volunteers from the Evanston Township High School Wrestling Team served unlimited pizza and beverages. Tom McRaith, Kiwanis Member and SHORE Honorary Board Member, kept the Mardi Gras tradition alive by passing out beaded necklaces as people entered the restaurant. The event realized nearly $5,000 for our programs and services. SHORE extends its gratitude to the Kiwanis Club for hosting the event, Giordano’s, the Evanston H.S. Wrestling Team for volunteering, the Board for supporting the event, Richard Similio of Circle Realty Advisors for allowing guests to park for free in the building garage, and the individuals and company’s listed below that were ad mat sponsors. In Memoriam

SHORE was saddened by the loss of a person served and several other friends. Maurice, a person served by the Adult Services Program, suddenly passed away on December 8th at the age of 27. He enrolled in the program in September 2006, after his public school education ended at the age of 22.

Debbie Shulruf, Director of the Lois Lloyd Center, stated, “Maurice loved life. His smile would light up his face and the room. Maurice was energetic and always willing to help staff with tasks.”

LEEDA, the CILA where Maurice resided, held a memorial service at the Lois Lloyd Center, which was attended by staff from SHORE, LEEDA and Park School, where he graduated, persons served and some relatives of Maurice.

In October 2011, Betty Carlson passed away. She was a long-time friend and supporter of SHORE and her son Olaf resides at the Patricia Lloyd Townhomes. Reva Margolies passed away in December and she was a Member of the Lakewood League, which was a woman’s group that did extensive fundraising that benefited SHORE. She also volunteered at the Second Time Around Thrift and Gift Shop. Richard Braun, father of Debora Braun, Executive Director, and Mollie Schaffer, mother-in-law of Douglas Schwartz, Board Member, passed away in March. To note, Mr. Braun’s name was added to SHORE’s Endowment Honor Roll Plaque as a result of significant contributions the agency received in his memory. The Honor Roll was established years ago as a way to secure a brighter future for the individuals we serve.

Our condolences are extended to all the families mentioned on their loss. We will miss our friends dearly.

Celebrating the Holidays

December was a festive month as holiday parties were held at many of SHORE’s facilities. The Lois Lloyd Center had a luncheon and family members of persons served in the Adult Services Program attended. Santa Claus made a surprise visit to the delight of the crowd. Over 20 students and staff from the North Cook Young Adult Academy in Skokie volunteered to set-up, serve food and cleanup after the party. The center also had a door-decorating contest with Group 7 winning 1st place with the door theme of “Holiday Diversity.” An open house was held at both SHORE Homes West and Buehler House/SHORE Homes East. Families were asked to bring an appetizer or dessert while SHORE supplied main dishes. For all the holidays, the CILAs (Community Integrated Living Arrangements) get together to enjoy a special dinner. SHORE’s Joseph Koenig, Sr. Center had a pizza party. Volunteers from the DoubleTree Hotel in Skokie brought a gift for everyone with Santa Claus in tow to greet the excited trainees. In addition, Joe Koenig, owner of Trim-Tex, Inc. with a few staff distributed knit hats to the nearly 200 trainees. The hats had the Trim-Tex logo and the American flag stitched on them, which is a perfect gift to help keep warm throughout the long winter. A Staff Appreciation Holiday Party was held on December 16th at Giordano’s in Morton Grove. The party was underwritten by the Board of Directors as a way to thank the staff for all their hard work provided throughout the year to our persons served. It was also a time for staff to bid Jerry Gulley farewell since many would not see him again before he retired on December 31st. On behalf of the employees, Jerry was presented with a wine basket and was given a gift certificate to notify him that he would be receiving wine each month for one year since he is an avid wine connoisseur. Jerry was surprised and was looking forward to the wine deliveries. Other tokens of appreciation for staff came in the form of baked goods and other food from family members, and each employee received a small monetary gift as a result of donations received from the Board, Therapy Providers of America and numerous parents and family members. Staff was very appreciative of the party, money and the kindness shown. Thank you to all who contributed to the enjoyment of the holidays.
