Come Back Peter“Dear Talking Pictures TV/ Renown Pictures, A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine contacted you regarding a 1952 film called Come Back Peter. It was a bit of a long shot, but you replied in super quick time and said it was being aired in July. I have been trying to track down this film for 50 years as I had a part in it. I remember seeing it on the TV a couple of times in the 1960s but not since and I would love my wife and three daughters to see what I got up to all those years ago.My grandfather was a set construction manager at Shepperton Studios and he found out that a baby was wanted for a new film. The film was “Come Back Peter” and the baby ended up being me (Baby David). I was only 6 months old at the time so don’t remember much about it. Apparently I was responsible for a script change as I contracted chicken pox during the filming!! As you can imagine, I am thrilled that Talking Pictures not only have the film but intend showing it again – so many thanks for that. I had exhausted all avenues I could think of in my quest and decided it had either been lost or destroyed. I am now really excited at the prospect of seeing it once again and showing it to my grown up family. I’ve sent a still from the film where my screen aunt has just noticed my chicken pox spots.

Although my Grandfather worked at Shepperton Film Studios, I think there was a tie-up with Bray Studios, as I believe the exterior shots were filmed around Bray.I must also say how excited I am to read that the film will also be released on DVD in August.”

BOOK OFFERS – RECOMMENDED NEW RELEASE

THE CURSE OF SHERLOCK HOLMESThe Basil Rathbone StoryBy David ClaytonBasil Rathbone is synonymous with Sherlock Holmes. He played the Victorian sleuth in all fourteen Fox/ Universal films of the 1930s and 40s, as well as on stage and radio. For many people, he is Holmes, however, he grew to hate the character. Holmes placed restrictions on his career: before he was an esteemed theatre actor, appearing in Broadway plays such as The Captive and The Swan, the latter of which became his launchpad to greater stardom. In his long career he appeared in many films, including: Love From A Stranger (1937), The Dawn Patrol (1938), The Mad Doctor (1941), Crossroads (1942), Frenchman’s Creek (1944), The Court Jester (1956) and many more. However, he never escaped his most famous role. Basil Rathbone was not Sherlock Holmes. In The Curse of Sherlock Holmes, biographer David Clayton looks at the behind-the-camera life of a remarkable man who deserved so much more than to be relegated to just one role.

Memories of a life in films Part 12, by Noel CroninWell, the millennium had arrived in all its glory. It turned out to be absolutely horrible for me; my dear wife Joyce passed away, who truly was my rock, and Dandelion was sold to what turned out be an American crook. I will go into detail of the FBI lawyers and the American federal system later and with more detail in a book that is being written – a must for all insomniacs!

Following the Dandelion débâcle, my health and confidence suffered and the fact that the American situation was dragging on made concentrating on films and TV difficult, but after a few years I again got interested in acquiring old film libraries and set about purchasing several old such libraries, from the BBC no less! It took three years of dogged persistence to save these films from literally rotting at the Beeb; libraries such as Butchers, New Realm; mostly British ‘B’ features but of great social value.

Having amassed several hundred old feature films what was I to do with them? Broadcasters had little or no interest; one company executive told me “we don’t play black and white after four in the afternoon”. He does now! After months of trying to place the films and with the conviction that quite a lot of people, given the chance, would watch them, the idea of starting our own channel emerged….

Next month: the start of Talking Pictures.Producer Noel Cronin founded Talking Pictures TV and Renown Pictures. Noel is contributing a series of memories to the newsletter over the coming months. Ever since his entrance into the world of film as a young man, Noel has been interested in preserving the heritage of lost and forgotten films, shorts and programmes, and for many years has been gathering, restoring and preserving this wonderful heritage which would otherwise be lost. Noel worked for the Rank Organisation and the Central Office of Information, and bought the rights to several libraries that owned films which now air on Talking Pictures TV. His career as a producer and editor of films, documentaries and TV series spans several decades.

Earl Cameron and the Volvo In the 1950’s, both EARL CAMERON and the VOLVO AMAZON were pioneers at promoting important changes to social attitudes. Robert Hughes identifies them.Born in Bermuda, Earl Cameron CBE was believed to be the first actor cast in an English mixed-race romance; he played a sailor captivated by a dockland lass in Pool of London (1951). The role echoed his own life in the Merchant Navy, coming to England in 1939 and later marrying an English girl. Debilitated with pneumonia, Cameron was hospitalised, suffering one ruined lung. His Bermudian twang, easier for British ears to understand than a West Indian accent, opened doors professionally, but while touring, doors were cruelly closed against him when seeking out digs. Undeterred, Cameron entertained the troops in the Netherlands and India where he was warmly received. Film roles included Simba and Safari (1955), both covering the Kenyan Mau Mau uprising, and he played a murder suspect in The Heart Within (1957). In BAFTA winning Sapphire (1959), Cameron’s performance as Dr Robbins handles the revilement of racial prejudice with such dignity after his sister is murdered for her ethnicity, that only the hardest hearts could have left the audience unmoved towards the challenges facing Colonial immigrants. Flame in the Streets (1961) also examines interracial discord in both society and the workplace. Further roles included Thunderball (1965), The Dark Man (1960), Dr Who, The Prisoner and

Danger Man. At the milestone age of 100, Earl Cameron was still working. Sadly, he recently passed away on 3rd July 2020 aged 102.

The Volvo Amazon, designed by Jan Wilsgaard, first appeared in 1956, inspired by Chrysler’s New Yorker and the Checker cab. An Amazon is used to kidnap Edward Fox in The Avengers, (1968), and William Lucas dumps his Amazon for a Jaguar E Type in Dateline Diamonds (1965). The Amazon saved many lives with its revolutionary seat belt, pioneered by Volvo who generously allowed rivals to copy the configuration charge-free. So while Earl Cameron’s acclaimed film roles were sensitively addressing racial tolerance coinciding with around 75,000 arrivals settling in England from former colonies year on year, Volvo’s Amazon revolutionised car occupant safety just as Ernest Marples was cutting the ribbon to open the M1 motorway “in keeping with the new, exciting scientific age.”

Update on our postponed Film Festivals in St Albans and Stockport

Due to the recent announcement by the Minister of Culture and the Prime Minister, it is definite that unfortunately our Stockport festival in October will need to be postponed along with our Film Quiz the night before. It is also clear that due to Covid 19 and social distancing guidelines and the laws on mass gatherings that we will not be able to reschedule our St Albans Festival of Film postponed in March until next year. We had hoped to hold a Christmas event, but with everything so uncertain, and with your safety in mind, we believe its much better to look at March next year for you all. But there is good news! We have secured a new date for both of these events with both venues these are:

St Albans 7th Festival of Film Sunday March 22nd 2020 NEW DATE Sunday 28th March 2021

Stockport 8th Festival of Film October Sunday October 4th 2020 NEW DATE Sunday 10th October 2021

Here are the options for ticket holders. I’m afraid due to social distancing rules and the increase in insurance, ticket prices for our events will be going up next year BUT NOT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ALREADY HAVE A TICKET. So the options for you are as follows:1. Let us know if you wish to transfer your tickets from this year to next year at

NO extra cost and which festival of film you wish to attend. You can move to either event, if either is sold out you will be placed on the waiting list for returns. YOU WILL NOT have to pay any increase. You will be re-issued with new tickets and seat numbers.

2. If you have Quiz tickets these can also be moved as we will be holding a Film Quiz with supper or Afternoon Tea in St Albans the day / evening before and Stockport the day / evening before. Again at no extra cost to current quiz ticket holders.

3. You can use your physical tickets for either event as a credit note against any items on sale in our newsletters, including DVDs, Books, Merchandise etc, please include the tickets with your order form.

4. If you really, really don’t want to secure a place at one of the best TV & Film History events of 2021 and a terrific day out – we will issue you with a refund. To do this you must return your physical tickets to us at: Renown Pictures Ltd, PO Box 592, Kings Langley, Herts WD4 4DB. Please include with your tickets a letter letting us know what you wish to do.

5. You can always call us to discuss your options on our usual numbers: 0808 178 8212 or 01923 290555.

It’s been a very difficult decision for all of us, but it’s the best way to ensure everyone is safe and we all have something to look forward to next year!

How to beEccentricThe Essential Richard Massingham1 DVD | Years: 1934-1951 Black & White Running Time: Approx: 170 minRichard Massingham was known to anyone who went to the cinema in Britain during the 1940s. He starred as a well-meaning but bumbling everyman in a series of imaginative shorts which provided instruction to the British public on everything from how to cross roads to the correct way to sneeze into a handkerchief to bathing in just five inches of water during wartime rationing. Often producing and directing too, his films are marked by a wonderful combination of comedy, instruction, surrealism and whimsy. This new selection from the BFI celebrates Richard Massingham as one of British cinema’s most fascinating and enduring eccentrics.Contents: Dr Massingham says... Tell Me If It Hurts (1934) | Coughs and Sneezes (1945) | Jet-propelled Germs (1948) | Handkerchief Drill (1949) | Another Case of Poisoning (1949) | The Cure (1950) | Surviving the War: The Five Inch Bather (1942) | Post Early for Christmas (1943) | In Which We Live: Being the Life Story of a Suit Told by Itself (1943) | Elopement in France (1944) | An Englishman’s home... Eccentrically British! Spotlight on: Richard Massingham

(31 January 1898 – 1 April 1953)The son of a distinguished newspaper editor,

Richard Massingham is noted for directing and starring in a series of public information films made in the 1940s and 1950s. He trained in medicine and was the Senior Medical Officer at the London Fever Hospital, but Richard was always interested in the cinema and made amateur films in his spare time. He made his

first short in 1933 which featured the hospital that he worked at.The following year he made a film about a traumatic dental visit: Tell

Me If It Hurts (1934), which received critical acclaim. After his film about a lodger preparing for his day, And So to Work (1936), he secured a place with the GPO Film Unit. This prompted him to leave medicine and become a full time filmmaker. In 1938 he registered his company, Public Relationship Films and began making shorts for the Ministry of Information and other government departments. As well as directing the shorts, he appeared in them as a good-humoured figure encouraging audiences to save fuel, sneeze into a handkerchief or bathe in the war recommended limit of “five inches of water.” As an actor he possessed an expressive face with a childlike charm, casting himself as the absent-minded ‘everyman’, (always allowing the audience to feel amused and superior, while the film’s message was firmly instilled). Post-war films such as They Travel by Air (1947) and Pool of Contentment (1946), adopted a similar strategy. Some of his most popular shorts include: The Five-Inch Bather (1942), Young and Healthy (1943), Coughs and Sneezes (1945), What a Life (1948), Handkerchief Drill (1949) and Moving House (1950).As a director, actor and producer, Massingham is often overlooked,

but in the 90 or so films he made, there is enough eccentricity and wit to earn him a place beside other individualists of the British short film. His marriage to wife Betty in 1943 was a happy union which lasted for the rest of his life. He died at his home in Biddenden, Kent on 1 April 1953, during production of The Blakes Slept Here, a lavish and curious Technicolour combination of gas advertising and historical content.

A founding father of British film: William Friese-Greene(7 September 1855 – 5 May 1921)

William Friese-Greene, a prolific English inventor and professional photographer is known as a pioneer in the field of motion pictures, creating a series of cameras during the period 1888–1891.

William Greene was born in Bristol in 1855. Friese was added to his surname when he married Helena Friese in 1874. He was apprenticed to a photographer before

establishing his own business in Bath, where he met John Rudge, who was experimenting with magic lanterns to create an illusion of movement. Friese-Greene enthusiastically adopted these ideas, experimenting both with Rudge and on his own. In 1885, he opened two photographic shops in London with Esme Collings, who went on to be one of the pioneers of British film-making.

Friese-Greene obsessively patented badly thought out devices, while the true advances in making and projecting motion picture films were being made elsewhere. He began experimenting with colour cinematography in 1898, even becoming a rival of the developer of Kinemacolor, G.A. Smith. A court case in 1913 brought by Friese-Greene’s Biocolour system against Kinemacolor brought down the latter, although Friese-Greene was unable to capitalise on the victory as he was beset with financial troubles. He remained an incurable optimist, constructing a camera for taking a series of photographs on a roll of perforated film moving intermittently behind a shutter, the basic principle of a motion-picture camera. Sadly, the camera was incapable of taking pictures at a sufficient rate to capture movement and no successful presentation of moving pictures was given by him. The credit for a successful cinematographic device goes to Thomas Edison.

His other inventions in the field of printing – including photo-typesetting – brought him wealth, as did his chain of photographic studios. However, he spent everything he earned on inventing, going bankrupt three times. He died on 5 May 1921 after delivering a speech about the uncertain state of the British film industry to a meeting of the cinema trade at the Connaught Rooms in London. His claim to have been the “inventor of Kinematography” was taken up by film historian Will Day, but a series of articles written by Brian Coe in the 1960s discredited this. He was, however, one of the very first to work on the concept of moving images.

Despite his failures, Friese-Greene is nevertheless a founding father of British film. The film, The Magic Box (1951) ensures his place in history is not forgotten.

Have just enjoyed another episode of Robin Hood, I haven’t seen it since I was 8, and it’s as enjoyable for me now as it was then. For me none of the remakes of Robin Hood have come anywhere near these classic episodes. Watching Robin Hood when originally screened made me want a long bow and crossbow with arrows, which I got for Christmas and had so much fun with. My arrows ended up just about everywhere and my mother got quite frustrated. Sometime later, when I asked where they were she said she had no idea and I never found them again, so think she must have confiscated them! I hardly got into trouble, but I used to when shooting the crossbow arrows which were pretty lethal and did quite a lot of damage!

Hello Lovely People, My husband John and I have watched many films/programmes on your channel – each trying to out-do the other on “who is that?” and sharing a number of “I remember...” One provided the missing link to one of my memories. 1950s films always remind me of one holiday when we walked along the promenade, as a film starring Alec Guinness was being shot there. I have always been able to visualise the mock up of the front of a boat with actors on “deck”. The other thing I remember about that day were the words “The Mudlark”. I watched a film “The Mudlark” once but I quickly knew that was not the one and again the

memory faded. Then John put your channel on just as a film called “Barnacle Bill” was starting. I shouted out:“That’s it, OMG I am sure that’s it”. He thought I had finally flipped but I knew this was the missing link to my film – my excitement increased further when I saw a shot of the side of the “boat” and the words “The Mudlark”. I never gave it a thought that it happened when I was 12 and with mum in Hunstanton. I am still going round on a bit of a high!!! Thank you for the part you played in solving my little mystery and making this old lady very happy. All Best Wishes for the Future Judith Summers, North Yorkshire

Working with the great Peter O’Toole on The Tudors in Dublin. I was the only one who got a photo with him because I said I was living in Limerick and talked about his old pal Richard Harris. At the time they were putting up a statue of him in the town. It was great to work with a legend. Oliver Reed is buried in Church Town on the Cork Rd. At one time, Richard Harris, Peter O’Toole and Ollie Reed were all living in Ireland. Regards, Derek, Limerick.

Letters to the ProjectionistOn this page we bring you some of the interesting letters that have arrived at Talking Pictures HQ this month. We receive many letters every day about film and series requests; please be assured that we do make a note of them all. We acquire new films and series every month, so ‘never say never’! is our motto – but sadly we can’t just play those we’d like to play, without proper licensing and rights in place. Also remember, some films or TV series may no longer exist, but we will keep trying!
