Dear Supporter,

We are just over three weeks away from our

170th Birthday Celebration. Hopefully, you will

have received an invitation and are able attend.

Our event will start at 6:30pm on Saturday 8th

June 2019 and will be held at Bishop Hannington Memorial Church. We will

be joined by worship band The Rock of Life, who are coming from Wiltshire,

and, our main speaker, President of Christian Vision for Men, CEO of the

Edge, and founder of The Code Movement and The Gathering, Carl Beech.

The evening will be packed with great testimonies of God’s goodness over

the years from local church leaders and our staff. It is an event that we hope

you will not want to miss!

Page 3: Dear Supporter,

We are delighted to introduce

Grant, our new Grant and

Business Relations Manager, who

completes our Head Office team.

We asked Grant to introduce

himself:

I grew up in South Africa, before

moving to England in 2001. I

completed my Diploma in Civil

Engineering and worked in the

Engineering field for 20 years,

both in South Africa and England.

Having sensed a time for change,

I then worked in finance for a local

charity for over 12 years until

January 2019. I have been involved in men’s ministry, in varying capacities,

and I am extremely passionate about this area of church life. I am South East

Regional Director for Christian Vision for Men (CVM) in a voluntary capacity.

Apart from men’s ministry, I am also passionate about helping people

struggling with addiction and I head up The Recovery Course in the Redhill

and Reigate area.

I am married to Shaleen, and we have 2 cats, Mack and Kimi. I enjoy all

sports, especially rugby and cricket, and I am an avid supporter of the

Harlequins rugby team. I am very excited to be part of Brighton and Hove

City Mission and I am looking forward to using my skills and experience to

serve alongside my colleagues and to see how the most vulnerable in society

can be best served.

If you know of any grant-making bodies or businesses who would love to

support us, please contact Head Office, and we’ll put you in touch with Grant.

Our Schools team has been in a state of

transition since Kerry, our former Schools Team

Leader, handed in her notice in October 2018, to

left us in February 2019 to join another Christian

organisation. From November to February we

searched for someone to head up out team 35

hours per week, term-time only. However, no

suitable applicants came forward. Therefore a

decision was made to restructure our Schools team, appointing a team leader

for 3 days per week, assisted by 2 part-time team members. Following a

successful interview, Lloyd was appointed as our new Schools Team Leader

in mid March.

Following the appointment of Lloyd, our team gained another team member in

May. Helen has been appointed to work for us 19 hours per week, term-time

only. Helen is the youth worker at Holland Road Baptist Church and brings a

wealth of knowledge to the team, having been a teacher for many years.

Nairne remains in the team and

has been offered additional hours

working in our Schools team from

June. She will be developing our

Relationship and Sex Education

work within secondary schools.

Our Schools team vision for 2019

and into the future is to see a

Christian presence in every school

in Brighton and Hove and beyond.

They want to achieve this by

humbly serving schools, assisting

them with what they need. (from left to right) Nairne, Schools Team Member,

Page 9: Dear Supporter,

When delivering compassion, love, and care to

our clients our Brighton Food Bank staff work

well together as a team. It is a real privilege to

help those that visit us and we feel proud to work

as God’s servants. So who is part of our team?

Mike, our Brighton Food Bank Team Leader, is

very well supported by Tony and Hannah.

Between the three of them they have a wide

range of skills, which is important in handling the complex situations our clients

bring to us, talking to agencies, and engaging with people who wish to donate

items. As we help 18 clients each day, we need a strong and committed group

people to enable the work that we do. We are blessed with 17 dedicated

volunteers who listen to the crisis of each client. This can be extremely

difficult, however, with prayer, the Holy Spirit and our companionship anything

is possible. In addition to this, managing donations requires a dedicated band

of people to collect the food donated from various location, carry the food up

32 steps, and place the items onto the shelves. The addition of fresh fruit and

vegetables arriving on our doorstep has meant that the time from when an

item arrives to it being available to our clients is crucial in ensuring that no

food goes to waste. We have 2 amazing volunteers who regularly collect food

from various supermarkets, businesses, and churches in our city, and over 10

helpers, that consist of those

who are retired, Duke of

Edinburgh students, former and

current clients, and young

offenders, who commit at least 2

hours per week to keep our

shelves stocked. If you are

interested in joining our Brighton

Food Bank team of volunteers,

please contact our Head Office. (from left to right) Tony and Hannah, Brighton Food Bank

Team Members, Mike, Brighton Food Bank Team Leader

Page 10: Dear Supporter,

Sometimes when a ministry is growing it can be a

daunting experience, how will we be able to cope

with all these visits that are demanded of us?

This is exactly how our Rest Homes team were

feeling and sometimes it is easy to forget that we

have an amazing God who provides.

At the beginning of the year we were offered

funding for a paid member of staff in our Rest Homes team. We have been

praying for the right person to join our team 2 days a week to cover the

demand from homes who are asking our team to start delivering services and

become more involved in befriending residents one-to-one. Last month, a

manager of a home approached Bev to ask if a female resident, who was

having trouble getting on with the other residents, could be befriended. Bev

was unsure how she was going to fit in an additional visit, when one of our

volunteers told Bev that she had been thinking about becoming a befriender.

Our volunteer is now successfully visiting the resident and it seems to be a

God inspired match. God also provided on another occasion when Bev was

asked by an activity coordinator of a home

to start providing services. Bev had no idea

how a service could be run in this particular

home as there weren’t any volunteers

available in the area surrounding the home.

However, one of our volunteers who helps

in our food bank stepped up. It so

transpired that the home was opposite the

house of our food bank volunteer and she

was happy to visit there with her husband.

Please pray that we never miss an

opportunity of God’s provision.

Bev , Rest Homes Team Leader
