Dear Padre April 26, 2020
Why couldn’t the disciples recognize Jesus after the resurrection?
Do you think we would recognize Jesus if he came back today?
Before the resurrection, Jesus likely would have suffered the ravages of illness and lack of proper nutrition that all the people of his time were subject to. After the resurrection, Jesus showed He was exalted with the very power of God. Even his physical appearance had changed. In view of His glorified appearance, the disciples were able to recognize Jesus with the aid of His marks of the passion (John 20:20). No one would go to the extreme of putting nails through his own hands and feet and thrust a spear into his side to pretend he was Jesus! He bore those marks, so He had to be the Lord. Another purpose of showing His disciples His glorified body was to assure them we would undergo a similar glorification. In the resurrection we shall be completely changed and perfected in our humanity (1 Corinthians 15:52). We are sometimes slow to recognize our Lord in the ways He indicated He would be with us today: in the Eucharist (John 6:53); in the poor (Matthew 25:40); in His body, the Church (1 Corinthians 12:12). Coming to recognize Him among us in these ways today will ensure we are more like
Him in our resurrection.

Luke’s Emmaus story in today’s Gospel teaches us first of all, that Jesus’ death and Resurrection fit God’s purpose as revealed in the Scriptures; second, that the risen Jesus is present in the Word of God and especially in the Breaking of the Bread; third, that suffering is necessary for the Messiah "to enter into his glory"; and fourth, that we have a risen Savior, One Who personally walks with us in our daily paths, talks with us through His Word and with Whom we can talk through prayer. He is the One Who opens our minds to understand and respond to His Word. The bishops at the Second Vatican Council recorded these compelling words which are still deeply relevant to the Church today: 'The Church has always venerated the Divine Scriptures just as it venerates the Body of the Lord, since from the table both of the Word of God and of the Body of Christ it unceasingly receives and offers to the faithful the Bread of Life. It has always regarded the Scriptures together with sacred tradition as the supreme rule of Faith and will ever do so” (Dei Verbum 21). Jesus is with us, is concerned about us, and provides for us regardless of what life may bring. Moreover, the Father, at Jesus’ request, has given us the Holy Spirit so that we may teach others about Him. Let us, therefore, with the perception of His presence, walk with Jesus, talk with Him, depend on Him, worship Him, and tell others about Him. We know that Jesus is present to us each day. He walks with us, even and especially in our fear and wonder. The present “suffering” which we may be experiencing is an opportunity to see Him in a closer way. Let us not imitate the unseeing of the apostles at the empty tomb or the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Rather, let us trust in His presence and go about our daily work of sharing His love and mercy in all we say and do. He IS present, let Him guide our hearts and our hands to love as He has loved us.
In His love,
We are such value to God that He came to live among us … and to guide us home. He will go to any length to seek us, even to being lifted high upon the cross to draw us back to Himself. We can only
respond by loving God for His love. ~St. Catherine of Siena

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul.
Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least
spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come
I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me
to be separated from You. Amen. Complete ministry schedules and bulletins are on our

A Sense of Scripture The Catechism speaks of two senses in Scripture: the literal sense and the spiritual sense. The spiritual sense, in turn, is made up of three kinds: the allegorical (or “typological” sense), the moral (or “tropological” sense), and the anagogical (or “heavenly”) sense. Thus Scripture, the book that tells us about Jesus, also has two “natures”: a literal meaning and a spiritual meaning. We might summarize things this way: The literal sense of Scripture is the meaning conveyed by the words, discovered through sound interpretation. All other senses of Scripture are based on the literal. This literal sense accurately describes what took place. It also points us to deeper spiritual meanings. The allegorical sense, especially of the Old Testament, signifies a foreshadowing or “type” that will be fulfilled by Christ in the New Testament. That is, the Old Testament event points us to something Jesus did or made clear in the New Testament. The moral sense of the Old Testament is recorded for our instruction. It moves the Christian to act justly in the life of the Church by indicating to us what ought to be done. The heavenly sense of the Old Testament leads us towards heaven and our fulfillment in heaven in the way that it tells us about the coming of Jesus. These senses apply most clearly in the Old Testament but may be used in the New Testament as well. How does this work in practice? We begin by observing certain similarities between Old Testament and New Testament passages. ~Steve Kellmeyer, Catholic Apologist
