Dear NASBA Guests, Hope this letter finds everyone rested from a nice Easter holiday. I think we are in for a treat as we visit the historic Greenbrier Hotel. There is plenty to experience on the property itself. Surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains, the Greenbrier is known as America’s Resort. It has hosted guests from all over the world on its 6,500 acre estate for more than 200 years. The day’s calendar of events will be placed at your door in the morning informing you of the many activities on the property. Have fun exploring the beautiful grounds and participating in whatever you so desire. We have a fun day planned for Friday. It will begin with a guided tour of the interior of the current hotel, which opened in 1913 and served as an Army Hospital during World War II. (Tom has arranged for the Bunker tour on Saturday morning, so spouses may also attend.) We will then take a short drive into Lewisburg. Quaint Lewisburg was voted “America’s Coolest Small Town”, by Budget Travel Magazine in 2011. Here we will visit the Old North House Museum. Built in 1820, the museum includes the collections of the Greenbrier Historical Society dating from the Revolutionary War all the way through World War II. Lunch will be nearby at the historic Bella Casa. It is a beautiful old home built in 1785. If time permits, we can stroll the streets of Lewisburg before departing for the Historic Landmark Organ Cave Tour. It promises to be an exciting adventure. Confederate soldiers encamped here many years ago. We hope to be back at the hotel by 3:30. Tea is served daily at 4:15 for those who would like to enjoy a little afternoon snack and enjoy the relaxing music before dinner. Safe travels and looking forward to seeing all of you soon in West Virginia!

“A Closer Look at The Greenbrier”

This walking tour of the public lobbies describes the interior of the hotel. its décor and its

development. The Greenbrier opened in 1913; served as an Army Hospital during WWII; was

redecorated by Dorothy Draper in the late 1940’s. Today, it continues to be a leading historic

hotel in America.

North House Museum

Built in 1820, the North House Museum contains the collections of the Greenbrier Historical

Society, including many of the finest examples of early Virginia furnishings. Visitors to the North

House are treated to a special view of two hundred years of life in the United States. From the

revolutionary War to the Civil War to World War II, the lives of everyday Americans can be seen

at the North House. Whether your interests are early decorative arts or life on the 18th century

frontier, you'll find just what you're looking for at the North House Museum.

Lunch at Bella Casa

Bella Casa is an historic Italian restaurant. It is located on Washington St. in Historic Lewisburg.

From its origin as a home in 1785, it has been transformed from a residential property to housing

several businesses in its lifetime.

Organ Cave

Take a tour of national historic landmark Organ Cave, located 20 minutes from The Greenbrier.

The calcite rock formation resembling a large church organ gives the cave and surrounding

community its name. First opened in 1822 as a stagecoach stop, Confederate soldiers encamped

in the cave; salt-peter was mined here. It opened commercially in 1835. Remember to wear a

light jacket and comfortable shoes for your 2-mile walk into the cave; year round, the cave is 62

degrees.
