Dear Challenger,

As promised here is your Orchid Challenge Information pack that hopefully will support you with your fund raising.

Thank you for sending your £20 deposits which we have used to secure your hotel booking and as such will be deducted from your final payment (i.e. hotel will cost you around £60 for 2 nights less £20)

We have now had two organisational team meetings to plan and organise the event. At the last meeting the route was agreed in principle and is now been planned in detail.

We are currently organising vehicles to transport us and our bikes during the challenge and we have written to ferry companies asking for free channel crossing.

The basic challenge details have now been confirmed (see separate sheet) and it is important that you note and diarise dates and timings.

As with last year you will need to book the Friday off work - albeit this year the challenge will actually start on the Friday (no warm ups, team building, coffee shops!)

As we endeavour to make this event happen behind the scenes, we now hand over the sponsorship form (attachedseparately) for you to do your bit - raise money, and loads of it!!!

It is important we do not step on each others patches - people will always give more to those they know, please bear this in mind and talk to your fellow team members who work in your world to discuss how to maximise fund-raising

Remember you must raise £250 minimum - but our expectation is that you will set personal targets much higher than this.

Some ideas to generate additional funds are attached.

There is no competition for who can raise the most as everyone is at a different starting point - the most important thing is that as a team we feel in our hearts that we have done our very best.

THE ORCHID CHALLENGE 2002

The Brown Dog Orchid Challenge Team have to ride a bike 125 miles through 3 countries - England, France and Belgium.

Whilst the challenge will take place over two days - the team only have 12 hours riding time to complete the challenge.

None of the team are regular bikers, indeed most of the team have not been on a bike for years - thus making the event a real challenge for everyone involved.

You may have your own ideas - this may help!

Other than asking everyone you meet and writing to people….

1. Think of friends you know who have their own business’ or who may be very senior/influential They may provide corporate sponsorship

2. What consultants pester you for business - pester them for sponsorship

3. Get your mum to organise an ‘open house coffee day’ (Marks mum did this in 2000 and raised £1000) Have a tombola, make and sell cakes - advertise in local post office (we can do a poster or letter for you to pop in local houses around you

4. Drop a note to all local houses near you - put in SAE

5. Go on local radio - get a feature in local paper (Mark did this last year with great affect)

6. Write to local businesses

7. Contact schools (many schools received the Orchid video last year) they may do something as testicular cancer hits 15-18 year old big time

MENS CANCER

In the last 20 years, world-wide cases of prostrate cancer have increased dramatically. With the decline in deaths from lung cancer, prostrate cancer is becoming the most important issue to men.

Testicular cancer is a life threatening disease that predominantly affects young men between the ages of 15 and 40. Over the last 25 years incidence has doubled and the rise has been linked to decline in sperm count.

Though curable today, more than half the patients delay seeking treatment because of lack of knowledge or embarrassment, making treatment more complicated and distressing.

Penile cancer, though rare and largely preventable by education, usually presents late at a stage when the only treatment is mutilating surgery.

THE ORCHID CANCER APPEAL

Formed in June 1996 by former testicular cancer patient, Colin Osbourne. The Orchid Cancer Appeal was the first registered charity dedicated to fund research into diagnosis, prevention and treatment of testicular, prostrate and penile cancer and to increase public awareness of these previously neglected diseases.

The charity has achieved its primary target in securing funding to establish the Mens Cancer Unit’s research programme at Barts and the London Hospitals.

It is now setting out to extend this with the second phase of development to meet the need for funding of Men’s Cancer treatment in other parts of the UK.
