ISSUE 81 Oct 2017

Dear All,

I am happy to say that we now have a dedicated department of Pediatric Radiology at MUMC, after years of planning. My sincere thanks and congratulations to Dr. Nina Stein, the new Chief and a passionate advocate for our children’s cause at MUMC, Dr. Brian Yemen, the former Site Chief and committed supporter of the plan, Dr. Karen Gulenchyn who has successfully executed the plan, Dr. Erik Jurriaans who is overseeing the adult component of the work done at MUMC, and of course our pediatric radiologists Drs. Kelly Ainsworth, Mutaz Alnassar, Heba Takrouri and Yongdong Wang for all the efforts to get this program off the ground. This has required a huge amount of dedication, persistence, resilience and faith. A great achievement for the department. This was the last missing piece in our drive to achieve excellence through subspecialization, as delineated in the plan crafted 10 years ago, and I wish all success to our new pediatric department. I hope to see new recruits joining the team in the near future, to expand the spectrum of activities.

INS IDE THIS

Our fellowship program at MUMC will resume soon and this is a sign of a healthy department, as the clinical fellows in our city-wide program are like bees cross-pollinating. I am optimistic that this will enable us to repatriate the pediatric component of our residency program to McMaster. The obstetrical ultrasounds will still be performed by the MFM physicians, but will now be included within the OB-GYN department. Our OB US colleagues will keep training our residents, but they will cover their calls. Our Department will now demonstrate excellence, sustainability and continuity of care in our 6 major subspecialties: neuroradiology, chest and body imaging including cardiac, musculoskeletal imaging, breast imaging, vascular and interventional radiology, and pediatric imaging, Congratulations to all for making our department one of the best in the country. You should all be very proud. All The best, David Koff Chair, Department of Radiology, FHS

As Faculty of Health Sciences educators, you may be asked to tutor a small group problem based

tutorial, or perhaps, you may be recruited to be a clinical preceptor/supervisor. Our Pathways provide

the necessary tools to assist you in being effective educators. For new faculty members, there is an

expectation that you attend the yearly Orientation Session for Health Sciences Faculty. This session is

offered twice-yearly and new faculty have the option of attending either in the Fall or Spring. The PFD

Pathways are counted as educational contributions for your Education Dossier.

2017-2018 PFD Academic Pathways Offerings: Please view Listing of Events here

Our Pathways include inter-professional workshops/sessions varying from the very basic concepts

(Exposure) to more advanced level training (Immersion and Mastery). They are primarily designed for

educators wanting to gain or improve their teaching/precepting skills, and who are committed to

continued reflection, evaluation, and consequent improvement of their own practice.

Participation in PFD offering will also be recorded in MacFACTS (former STAR).

On September 2nd, 2017, Drs. Hamed Basseri, Natasha Larocque and Jane Meng were invited to lead the Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) workshop at the

“McMaster Book to Bedside Conference.” This is a well attended annual conference aimed to provide medical students with more hands on experience with various clinical skills required in Internal Medicine. The Mac Rad residents led three very

successful hands-on sessions with students. Dr. Basseri even made a phantom mold for students to practice ultrasound-guided biopsies! Last year, this session was the highest rated workshop at the conference and we are sure that this year will be no

different.

EDUCATION CORNER

As we move to competency-based medical education, a new tool, Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA)

will be used for assessment.

Milestone: A defined, observable marker of an individual’s ability.

EPA: An essential task of a “discipline” that an individual can trusted to perform independently.

For example: The ability to assess and protect the airway can be a milestone of running a code which is

an EPA related to medical practice.

EPAs: Incorporate multiple milestones from several CanMEDS roles and are stage specific.

For any questions on CBME please contact Dr. Karen Finlay ([email protected]).

RESEARCH CORNER

Did you know that 65% of the studies that utilize the Department of DI at HHS are academic studies? Although industry sponsored studies seem to be growing in presence, it is interesting to see that the majority of the studies being done still are considered investigator driven. An academic study, also known as Investigator Initiated Study (IIA), is a study where the investigator designs and implements the study and acts as the sponsor, or in our case, HHS would act as the sponsor. Funding for these projects can come from a number of sources including academic grants (i.e. CIHR), government grants (i.e. ORF), or even industry grants where the company provides the funds but remains at an “arms length” from the study. While there can be many challenges that come with running your own trial, McMaster and HHS have implemented a number of services to help you carry out your IIA. For example, IIAs are exempt to being charged the 30-40% overhead that comes with sponsored trials (note: certain grants such as ORF are still charged overhead). In addition, the McMaster Industry Liaison Office (MILO) has a team that will help you with knowledge translation and commercialization come the conclusion of your study. For more information on how to build an IIA, please feel free to contact the DI & MDU Research Manager Jane Castelli ([email protected]). Next month’s Research Corner will feature Industry Research Projects.

Stephen Clarke hold the record for the world’s

fastest pumpkin carving time: 24.03 seconds.

The rules of the competition state the pumpkin

must weigh less than 24 pounds and be carved

in a traditional way, which require at least

eyes, nose, ears, and a mouth.

The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown

by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in

1993 with a 836 lb. pumpkin.

Halloween was influenced by the ancient

Roman festival Pomona, which celebrated

the harvest goddess of the same name.

Many Halloween customs and games that

feature apples (such as bobbing for apples)

and nuts dates back to this time. In the past,

Halloween has even been called San-Apple

Night and Nutcrack Night.
