Hi, my name is Cindy Guillaume and I am the Dean for the School of Education. I would like to congratulate you on your decision to pursue a graduate degree and personally welcome you to your first course at Northcentral University.

You might want to think of this first course as a Student Success course. In this course we show you the types of things you're going to be doing at Northcentral as you get your degree, where to find the tools we have to help you do this: a time management program, our Library, the Writing Center, online tutoring, the Dissertation Center, and introduce the team of people supporting you such as your faculty and Academic Advisor. The Student Orientation highlighted some of these points and will always be available for you on your Student Portal. If you have not yet watched the orientation, please do so before continuing with this presentation.

Let’s start with the syllabus. You got a tour of the course room and the syllabus in the Student Orientation. But, you might be wondering “Where and when I do find out what I need to do?”

This nitty‐gritty type of information is on your Activities tab. Details related to how to complete the assignments (or activities – you might hear both of these words used interchangeably here at Northcentral) will appear in the Activities tab of your course room. We understand that this may be your first online course, and even if it is not, we understand that the Northcentral platform is different than others you might have used in the past. We also know that it is important for you to succeed in this course. So, you will find all of the information you need to complete each and every activity in the Activities tab. Click on the assignment that you are working on and an overview of the assignment will appear.  You can print out the instructions from this screen using the “Print” function on your computer.

I know you are ready to dig into this course and get your program started. But, before you do, I would like to offer you some tips that will increase your chances of success and graduating on schedule.

It is very important to review your syllabus prior to starting the course. A first readwill give you the focus on the activity,  the amount of resources to be covered and the approximate time involved.

It will be critically important for you to manage your time effectively to finish not only this course, but your program. Northcentral courses are 3 credits and you should expect to spend an estimated 10‐15 hours per week for a 12 week course and 15‐17 hours a week for an 8 week course. If you are in a doctoral program, when you hit the dissertation writing stage, you will likely average closer to 15‐20 hours a week. Courses have a set end date and all courses note either suggested or actual due dates. Even if your course notes that a due date is “suggested” it is in your best interest to complete that activity on or before that date. Falling even a few days behind in one or two activities can result in not completing the course. 

We know our students – if you are the “average” Northcentral student you are about 40, working a full time job, and have kids under the age of 18 at home. Even if you do not fit this profile, we understand that you are a busy adult. 

As Dean, when students fail a course, I know. For 8 out of every 10 cases the reason for the failure is not the difficulty of the work, it is simply a lack of effective time management and falling behind.  Northcentral has teamed up with a Time Management Expert and in this first course. During this course you will learn skills like how to color your choices, how to avoid interruptions, and what it means to flexicute. These are skills that will have immediate pay‐off, in your personal, work and academic life. Completing a graduate program (even a 100% online program) takes time. We will help manage your time so that you are successful.

This course will start off slow, giving you some time to learn and acclimate to the system. It will pick up around activity 3 and from that point until the end of your program, every time you submit an activity you will be receiving critical feedback. You will be able to read your instructor’s feedback by opening the file they will upload after each activity you submit. 

Receiving critical feedback is part of the process and I ask that you frame the feedback in such a way that you look forward to your instructors’ suggestions about how to improve your work. Your instructor’s job is to help you succeed. You cannot do that without critical feedback that pushes you to grow as a scholar.

Remember, the criticism is not about you, as a person. It is about the work you submitted. Our job is to mentor you into a graduate candidate and critical feedback is a necessary part of this process. After all, this is what you are paying for!

Communication is important in a 100% online program.

To better assist you, please communicate with instructors via the Compass messaging system rather than regular e‐mail. If you have something come up prevents you from completing your work, please contact your Academic Advisor and instructor immediately. Your Academic Advisor can work with you to determine possible options. 

Your instructor at Northcentral University provides one‐on‐one communication. Your point of contact for all course related questions regarding grades, assignments, and syllabi are to be directed to your instructor.

A graduate program will take you years to complete and academic endeavors will become a part of your daily life during these years.

Enjoy the process: of learning to become a more scholarly writer, of fine tuning your critical thinking skills, and, if you are in a doctoral program of becoming a scientist and eventually an expert in your area of research. 

When I was in graduate school, I lived by the following guidelines: Show up; Work hard; Remain focused on your studies; Stay committed to learning; Announce your professional goals with daily verbal affirmations i.e. ‘I will be Dean at Northcentral University.’ ; Keep motivated; Have fun, but always remember humility, respect, patience, and kindness.
