In the article, “Chiropractic Helps Digestive Disorders”, the
author states that over $80 billion are spent each year on
drugs to relieve heartburn, bloating, acid reflux, constipation,
irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea and other digestive
disorders. These symptoms are becoming increasingly
prevalent in our society. However, science and research has
shown that chiropractic care offers a powerful solution to
this modern day epidemic.
The article states that the nervous system controls digestive
function from several different regions. The vagus nerve,
which courses out of the brain stem and runs near the atlas
bone, innervates all the major organs of digestion and
functions to stimulate the digestive process. The sympathetic
nerves coming out of the thoracic and lumbar regions and
the sacral parasympathetic nerve fibers are also all major
areas controlling the pace of digestion.
Chiropractors search for the location of spinal misalignments
called subluxations. By adjusting this misalignment, you can
restore nerve supply to the deficient organs. This chiropractic
approach coincides with the body’s natural ability to heal
itself and return itself to balance.
Several studies now back up this information. According to
the article, a published case study shows a young woman
that had been afflicted with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
once or twice a week for 5 years. After just one adjustment,
she noticed her symptoms easing up and within a short time
all of her digestive problems disappeared completely. The
report was published two years later, and all of her
symptoms were gone by then.
Another study with three infants further demonstrated this
information. The three infants had irregular bowel
movements. After trying different laxatives and other
procedures, the infants began chiropractic care. According to
the study author, Dr. Larry S. Arbeitman, D.C., “All three
experienced almost immediate improvement. By the end of
the study all three had bowel movements at least once every
day.” Subluxations in specific areas of the spines can prevent
the bowel from functioning properly. According to the article,
regular chiropractic care can help patients establish a more
natural rhythm of bowel movements.

Our Young “Brannon” Brings the Luck of the Irish to the Chicago Bulls
Feb 2, 2015 | February 2015 Newsletter, Newsletter Articles | Dan Rahill hadn’t seen his good friend, and fellow Notre Dame Alumn, Michael Moran, for several months at the usual Irish Entrepreneur meetings Michael hosted/sponsored as SVP, Commercial Banking at American Chartered Bank. Michael informed Dan that his son, Brannon, had brain cancer and he had been with him during his treatment. Brannon still spends much of his time at the hospital and, as such, Michael was unsure if he and Brannon could accompany Dan and his son, Kevin to the Bulls game on the 22nd. As it turned out, Brannon played a starring role in what was coincidentally, the same night the Bulls were celebrating “Youth Health & Wellness Night. Dan, Michael and the boys were already sitting floor seats when an anonymous couple offered up their two seats on the floor next to Marv Albert and Hall of Famers, Reggie Miller and Grant Hill. Reggie pulled Brannon up on his lap as he announced the game, just one of the many highlights of Brannon’s memorable night with his dad. It was a great night topped off by a big win!

Every winter, drivers across the state of Illinois have tragic and scary encounters with black ice, which is a thin and often invisible glaze of frozen water on the road. As cars hit this hard‐to‐see hazard, drivers can completely lose control of their vehicles, causing wrecks and frightening near‐misses. As temperatures become unpredictable from late winter into spring, it’s a prime time to learn more about the hazard of black ice.
How Can I Spot Black Ice on the Roadway?
The biggest danger of black ice is that it is hard to see and largely indistinguishable from an unfrozen road surface. However, here are a few tips for predicting and spotting the dangerous condition:
Black ice may be a danger any time the temperature drops below 40 degrees, especially in the morning, evening, or when temperatures change rapidly.
Sections of roadway affected by black ice may appear wet or slightly darker than the road surface in other areas.
Black ice is especially common on bridges, under bridges, and in areas that that are shaded or prone to water runoff.
How Can I Drive Safely If Black Ice Is Present?
Driving on black ice is just like driving on any kind of ice, but it’s often even more dangerous because people can’t see it and may not be driving as cautiously as they might when ice is clearly visible. Here are some tips for driving when the conditions are right to create black ice:
Slow down, especially while turning. Maintain a little more distance from the vehicle in front of you. Give yourself more time to brake or change lanes. Don’t use cruise control. Turn your lights on. Wear your seatbelt. Understand how your car reacts in icy conditions
Don’t overcorrect or slam on the brakes if you do start to slide.

You have worked hard your entire career, and it you are now looking to your
retirement. You have braved the harsh northern winters, and 80° and the sun sounds enticing. The question remains, should you purchase a second home, or simply rent in the locale you desire to be? We have been asked this very question on a weekly basis, and as you will see in this primer, there is not a simple solution. The answer depends on many factors that you need to think through. Our goal with this article is to get your mind churning so you make the best decision, both financially and personally. The Personal Decision How often do you intend on going to your retirement home each year? How many years of usage do you expect to get out of this home? The amount of time you expect to spend in this home is very important to determining whether it makes sense to begin with, both in terms of how often you intend to visit the home each year and how many years of use you believe you will get. If you foresee yourself spending several months per year at this second home, utility is high, and it may make sense to purchase a home rather than renting. However, if you intend on just spending a few weeks per year there, it may not be worth the costs for a mortgage/upkeep/property taxes (as explained below). There is also a question as to what happens as you age – do you intend on travelling to your second home, or do you want to do more travelling elsewhere? If it is the latter, it makes more sense to rent. Your usage may not be the only reason you want to purchase a second home. Do you intend on creating a place where your family can get together in one setting? If so, this may be another reason to buy. You may also want your family and friends to have the ability to visit a singular place even when you are not there.
The Financial Decision The main crux of this decision first hinges on whether or not you are financially independent ‐ you have accumulated
enough resources so that you are comfortable living your life as expected in retirement. If this is not the case, your answer is simple – save for your retirement and rent. However, for those lucky enough to have reached financial independence, the next question is whether or not it makes financial sense. First, do you have your current home paid off? If not, how would you feel about having two mortgages? Even if you have enough resources to support two mortgages, there is still the risk of a market downturn. I would consider whether or not you are going to be able to sleep at night knowing that you have such debt. You have dealt with such hurdle of a second mortgage, does it make sense to purchase a second home as opposed to renting? To make this determination, we believe it makes sense to understand your mortgage payment and compare it to the rent first, then layer on maintenance (of 1% of the value of the home for maintenance and/or assessments), insurance (case by case basis, as there is some homeowner’s insurance that is different from others – IE is there a need to insure flooding? Hurricane protection? Etc.) and finally property taxes (which can vary tremendously from 1‐3% of the value of the home). As you can see, the costs of owning a second home are not simply just the mortgage, but all of these additional costs. Thus, it is not a simple analysis.
