Filters relocated at breweryAs part of Ind Coope's major rationalisation of its production operationsat the Burton Brewery, the beer filters have been relocated, and are nowhoused in one area - as seen above.
The work was undertaken by Blotek Systems, and involved modifyingand refurbishing a series of Orion filters and re-siting them in a filter roomlocation that would handle all beer production at the 70·acre site. Akieselguhr discharge conveying system was also supplied and installedwith each of the four 100cm filters, to handle spent cake.Biotek Systems Ltd. Dealing withdairy effluentWhen Chantler Dairies, Cheshire, decided to expand and develop specialdairy products such as cream andyoghurt, it became essential to provide facilities for treating theeffluentfrom the separation processes andbottling plant. The equipment selec- .ted for this duty was a speciallyassembled plantfrom Clearwater. '
The plant supplied is based 'ondesigns widely used throughout theUK. Initially the effluent is deliveredto a balancing tank. to provide asteady homogeneous feed for thetreatment process. Provision is madefor dosing caustic soda to maintainthe pH level at the required limit.Further chemical dosing is providedto produce suspensions suitable forseparation.
The effluent is then delivered to adissolved air flotation (OAF) unit.Thissystem of solids separation isthought to bethemost effective andpractical method of separating solidsand removing dairy wastes. Solidsare floated to the surface by theinjection of minute air bubbles andthen scraped off fordisposal.
The OAF unit not only removessolids produced (including flocculated colloidal solids) from thecrude waste, but will also removerecycled biological solids produced
from the oxidation process, thusmaking just one desludging point inthewhole plantnecessary.
The equipment also provides forbiological oxidation and humussolids separation byanintegral drumfilter.Clearwater, Riverway Estate,Portsmouth Road. Guildford GU3lU.
Speciality mediaSeveral new speciality filter mediaproduct lines composed of binderfree microfilament polymeric materials have been introduced by Hollingsworth & Vose. The materials aremanufactured at the company's recently installed melt-blown productionfacility inFall River. Mass.
Equipment leasedA £1 m contract has been signedbetween Bloseparation Associatesand North West Securities for theleasing of equipment for its newfactory at Livingston. The factory isexpected to be on-stream early thisyear.
Founded last year BioseparationAssociates will provide raw materialfor the technology and medical industries. Products are derived fromthenovel development byJohn Wall, one of the funding shareholders, oftheCascade Bioseparator.
The technology deployed by thecompany has application in otherareas of protein manipulation, andstrong international interest has already been shown, withnegotiationsto sell thisspecialist technology to anumber of overseas countries already under way.Bioseparation Associates Ltd,Grange Road, Livingston, Scotland.
They range in basis weight from 20to 400g/m2 and have been designedfor use in such applications asspeciality liquid. food and beverage, pharmaceutical and hydraulic filtration.Hollingsworth & Vose Co, 112Washington St, East Walpole, MA 02032,USA.
