Welcome toDealey PlazaThis is Dealey Plaza, known as The Front Door o Dallas

since its dedication in 1936 but remembered today as theassassination site o President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Dealey Plaza was the end o the presidential motorcade prior

to Stemmons Freeway and the Dallas Trade Mart, the site o

President Kennedys scheduled luncheon speech.

Historic buildings are numbered on this map as well as

markers which explain signifcant points o interest.

Historic DesignationDealey Plaza was designated a National Historic Landmark District in

1993. A plaque was installed at that time, aligned with the location

o the atal shot in the middle o Elm Street. Directly beyond the

plaque and standing atop the white pedestal, Abraham Zapruderflmed the assassination with his home movie camera. Within hours

ater the assassination, a makeshit memorial was created, with

letters and owers added throughout the weekend.

Abraham ZapruderDallas dressmaker Abraham Zapruder stood on top o this pedestal

(properly called a plinth) with his assistant, Lillian Rogers, standing

behind to steady him. He was the only photographer known to have

flmed the entire assassination and his images proved crucial tounderstanding what happened. Zapruder made copies o his flm

available to investigators within hours o the presidents death.

Te Grassy KnollJournalist Merriman Smith, riding in the motorcade fve cars behind

President Kennedy, reported seeing Dallas Police run up this hill,

which he called a grassy knoll. Some witnesses thought shots

came rom the knoll but police ound no evidence o a gunman.The wooden stockade ence at the top, rebuilt several times

since 1963, is a reproduction o the original ence.

Te riple UnderpassThe triple underpass to your let, through which the presidential

motorcade was to travel or a 1 p.m. luncheon speech at the Dallas

Trade Mart north o downtown, is still railroad property. Railroad

employees, cleared by a supervisor and watched by police, saw the

assassination and resulting chaos. Dallas Police blocked all trafc

in and out o Dealey Plaza beore the motorcade arrived.

Te First Shot

The Phil Willis photograph above, taken rom this vantage point,

shows the presidential limousine approaching what would later be

called the grassy knoll. Investigators believe the photo was taken

about the time o the frst shot. Behind you is the ormer Texas

School Book Depository. The assassins window the last window on

the right o the sixth oor is about 165 eet rom President Ken-

nedy as seen in this picture.
