Franz SCHUBERT (1797-1828)

Piano Sonata & Impromptus

Marc-André Hamelin

The heavenly lengths of Schubert’s last piano sonata and second set of impromptus: Marc-André Hamelin captures the other-worldliness of these sublime, quintessentially ‘late’ works as do few other pianists.

Harold in Italy

Lawrence PowerBergen Philarmonic Orchestra, Andrew Manze

'Wine, blood, joy and rage mingle in mutual intoxication and make music together' was Berlioz’s (impractical) description of the finale of ‘Harold’: he would surely have rejoiced in this impassioned performance from Lawrence Power, Andrew Manze and the Bergen Philharmonic.

Piano Concertos Nos 8 & 9

Piers LaneThe Orchestra Now, Leon Botstein

Ferdinand Ries may once have been celebrated as ‘one of the finest piano-performers of the present day’ (the 1820s), but he is now remembered chiefly for his association with Beethoven. Yet the music here is never slavishly imitative: Piers Lane makes a persuasive case for rescuing these works from the pages of musical history.

The Votive Antiphons

The Cardinall’s Musick, Andrew Carwood

The monumental votive antiphon settings are among the highlights of Hyperion’s Tallis recordings from Andrew Carwood and The Cardinall’s Musick, the composer’s evolving style a musical response to the religious vicissitudes of the time. This compilation is the ideal introduction, both to the Hyperion series and to one of Tudor England’s most important composers.

Domenico SCARLATTI (1685-1757)

Sonatas, Volume 1

Federico Colli

Chandos’ new exclusive collaboration with the recent Salzburg and Leeds competition winner Federico Colli is kicking off with this first volume in a unique Scarlatti series. Playing on a modern Steinway, the Italian pianist – internationally recognised for his intelligent, imaginative interpretations and impeccable technique – here explores the keyboard sonatas of Scarlatti, taking a fresh approach from a philosophical angle, by grouping the compositions into ‘chapters’ in order to reflect the many contrasts of his life and his contradictory personality. This album is an exceptional start to what promises to be an exciting, long-lasting partnership.

John ADAMS (b. 1947)

Naïve and Sentimental Music; Absolute Jest

Doric String Quartet, Sean Shibe, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Peter Oundjian

As part of his final year as Music Director and following a two-season celebration of the Orchestra’s 125th anniversary, Peter Oundjian and the RSNO here present their second recording of music by John Adams, with the exceptional participation of the Doric String Quartet. Written for a large orchestra including six percussionists, keyboard sampler, and amplified steel-string guitar, Naive and Sentimental Music is a sweepingly symphonic masterpiece, full of contrasts and clashes. It reflects the dichotomy between ‘naive’ and ‘sentimental’ poetry as analysed by Friedrich Schiller in his 1795 essay Über naive und sentimentalische Dichtung, as well as the ‘bipolar’ musical life of Esa-Pekka Salonen, the dedicatee of this piece, who conducted the first performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1999.

Évocations, Op. 15; Pour une fête de printemps, Op. 22; Suite in F, Op. 33

Kathryn Rudge, Alessandro Fisher, François Le Roux CBSO Chorus, BBC Philarmonic, Yan Pascal Tortelier

Maestro Yan Pascal Tortelier celebrates his twenty-five-year recording career and seventy-album discography on Chandos with this album of three of Roussel’s most remarkable compositions. Although very rarely recorded, Évocations stands as a monument in the compositional life of Roussel, depicting scenes, sounds, and colours from his experiences of India. Also featured are the audacious Pour une fête de printemps, originally composed as a Scherzo for his controversial Second Symphony, and the later Suite in F, which was performed in Paris several times after its Boston premiere, to critical acclaim.

Tempesta di Mare Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Players

Expert in baroque repertoire and making period discoveries, the Philadelphia-based ensemble Tempesta di Mare extends the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Telemann’s death with this unique album played on historically authentic instruments. This recording is the first to bring together Telemann’s three surviving concerti-en-suite, from the intimate Concerto di camera to the more extravagant and impressive Concerto-Suites. CHAN 0821

Perspectives 7Alban BERG: Piano Sonata, Op. 1; Franz LISZT: Légende No. 1; Ludwig van BEETHOVEN: Piano Sonata No. 28, Op. 101; Modest MUSSORGSKY: Pictures from an Exhibition

Andreas Haefliger

Since 2004, Andreas Haefliger has been devising a series of recital programmes named Perspectives. Each programme focuses on one or two Beethoven sonatas, juxtaposed with works by other composers (ranging from Mozart to Berio) which in some way or other interact with Beethoven’s music, and with each other. The seventh instalment in the series, premièred at the Edinburgh Festival in 2017, opens with Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata, Op. 1, a highly concentrated work in which most of the music can be traced back to the two opening gestures. This is followed by Liszt’s impressionistic Légende No. 1 ‘St. Francis of Assisi: The Sermon to the Birds’. At the core of the programme is Beethoven’s Op. 101 Sonata – a work which in Haefliger’s opinion points more clearly towards Schumann than any other of the composer’s sonatas. But the grand finale of this amply-filled disc (86 minutes!) is a highly colourful and expressive performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition.

Gustav MAHLER (1860-1911)

Symphony No. 6 in A minor (1903-04)

Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä

Osmo Vänskä has a reputation for engaging with even the most iconic scores at face value, avoiding preconceived ideas and ‘time-honoured’ traditions. His and the Minnesota Orchestra’s recording of Mahler’s Sixth follows upon the 2017 release of the composer’s Fifth Symphony. Nominated for a 2018 Grammy Award, that interpretation has been described as ‘at once committed and detached, intense and transcendentally timeless’ (Norman Lebrecht) and ‘an exceptional performance that promises great things to come’ (allmusic.com).

Alec Frank-Gemmill, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Nicholas McGegan

Mozart’s horn concertos are so well-known that for many listeners the sound of the horn and Mozart are virtually synonymous. However, Mozart was not the first composer to write solo concertos for the horn; works from earlier on in the eighteenth century give a quite different perspective on the instrument. With this disc soloist Alec Frank-Gemmill provides insights into some of these early horn concertos, by composers ranging from Telemann to Haydn, by way of Mozart’s father, Leopold.

Eldbjørg Hemsing, Wiener Symphoniker, Olari Elts

Eldbjørg Hemsing has been a household name in her native Norway since childhood and made her solo debut with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 11. The present disc marks Hemsing’s first appearance on BIS, and is also her début CD. For the occasion she has chosen to highlight an all but forgotten work by a countryman, Hjalmar Borgström. His tuneful and expressive Violin Concerto in G major is combined here with Dmitri Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto. Eldbjørg Hemsing is supported in this and in Borgström’s concerto by the eminent Wiener Symphoniker conducted by Olari Elts.

Allan PETTERSSON (1911-80)

Symphonies 5 & 7Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Christian Lindberg

A characteristic trait in Allan Pettersson’s music is the use of strong contrasts – shifts between an enormous intensity and calm relaxation. This is certainly true of both works recorded here by the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and Christian Lindberg – widely regarded as the leading Pettersson interpreters of our time – the composer’s Fifth and Seventh Symphonies. The performance of the latter was conducted by Antal Doráti, the dedicatee of the work, and the event is often described as Pettersson’s ‘breakthrough’. Doráti’s 1969 recording with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra earned the performers and the composer a ‘Swedish Grammy’ Award.

Vito PALUMBO (b. 1972)

Three ConcertosConcerto Barocco for harpsichord and strings; Cello Concerto; Recorder Concerto for ‘Eagle’ recorder and large orchestra

Dan Laurin, Anna Paradiso, Mats Olofsson, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Jaime Martín

The genesis of this disc lies in a commission by Dan Laurin of a concerto for recorder and symphony orchestra. In 2013, after an intense collaboration between composer and soloist, the concerto was finished – a single movement almost thirty minutes long, and according to Laurin ‘by far the most difficult piece I have ever encountered’. The ‘Eagle Concerto’ is here coupled with two earlier concertante works by Palumbo, featuring Dan Laurin’s close chamber music partners, harpsichordist Anna Paradiso and cellist Mats Olofsson.

Royal Welcome Songs for King Charles II

The Sixteen, Harry Christophers

Charles II’s formal Restoration in 1660 marked both an end and a beginning: the end of England’s republican experiment and the beginning of a long process of monarchical reconstruction; and with a politically accident-prone king on the throne, Charles’s public relations machine could never rest. Purcell joined its small team of composer operatives just as the wave of Stuart propaganda swelled massively, and he surfed the wave with breath-taking panache, from his first court ode – the simple but rousing Welcome, Vicegerent of the mighty King – to the ambitious Fly, bold rebellion involving verse settings in up to seven parts and a six-part chorus.

1984Northern Ballet; Choreography by Jonathan Watkins

Tobias Batley, Martha Leebolt, Javier Torres, Hironao Takahashi, Giuliano Contadini, Kevin Poeung, Ashley Dixon, Victoria Sibson, Northern Ballet Sinfonia, John Pryce-Jones

Winner of the ‘South Bank Sky Arts’ Award for Dance 2016, and widely lauded by critics, choreographer Jonathan Watkins’ 1984 is an awe-inspiring retelling of George Orwell’s masterpiece. Winston Smith lives in a world of absolute conformity, his every action scrutinised by Big Brother. However, when Winston meets Julia, he dares to rebel by falling in love. Danced by Northern Ballet – the UK’s foremost narrative ballet company – to a score by Tony-nominated composer Alex Baranowski, this thoroughly modern take on Nineteen Eighty-Four will change the way you think about ballet. ‘Batley (Winston Smith) and Leebolt (Julia) are excellent, their bodies as vividly present as their faces are haunted. At the chilling end, we realise not only how intently we have been watching, but also that we too may be watched’ - Sanjoy Roy, The Guardian.

Don Giovanni

Staged by Jiří Nekvasil; Recorded at the Estates Theatre in Prague, October 2017

Simone Alberghini, Irina Lungu, Julia Novikova, Dmitry Korchak, Jiří Brückler, National Theatre Orchestra, Plácido Domingo

The world-famous singer, conductor and holder of 14 Grammy Awards Plácido Domingo has created, as conductor and artistic director, a unique Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre Prague, where the opera had its premiere 230 years ago. The production boasts original, classic scenes, traditional costumes, designed by Theodor Pištek, the Oscar winner for ‘Best Costume Design’ in Amadeus and authentic stage direction matching the performance features from 1787. The production is conceived as a replica of the legendary staging by the National Theatre Opera from 1969. ‘The palpable sense of history, enthusiasm of the cast and excitement of the star conductor all contributed to an atmosphere that made the performance seem larger than life’ (Bachtrack).

Paul CÉZANNE (1839-1906)

Cézanne - Portraits of a LifeExhibition on Screen

Described by Picasso and Matisse as ‘the father of us all’ Paul Cézanne is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. However, he remains the least well known of the impressionists and perhaps the most misunderstood. Cézanne - Portraits of a Life is based on a ‘never-to-be-repeated’ exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery, London; Musee d’Orsay, Paris; and Washington’s National Gallery of Art. His portraits provide the substance of this illuminating film which casts entirely new light on Cezanne’s life and work. Shot in 4k, featuring interviews with experts and conversations with his great-grandson Philippe Cézanne, viewers travel to the artist’s home and studio in Provence. Through Cézanne’s correspondence the DVD provides a rare understanding of the significance and genius of Cézanne and a key to a true appreciation of 20th century art.
