It’s important to take care when preparing your scholarship application.

• Plan ahead – don’t leave it to the last minute. The online scholarship application includes a series of questions, often requiring you to submit personal statements or provide information on your personal circumstances. You can come back and finish your application at a later point, remember it can be saved online at any time.

• Check eligibility – double-check the eligibility requirements on the website and apply for all scholarships you’re eligible for. Remember when applying for the Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Excellence Scholarship, the Deakin Scholarship for Excellence, or the Deakin Student Support Scholarship you are automatically in the running for all three scholarships, so address as much criteria as you are able to.

• Be careful to use correct spelling and grammar and always have someone read over your application before submission.

• Mention your academic and non-academic pursuits, including extracurricular activities. As part of your application you should provide relevant documentation, such as a letter from your school, employer or sports association, detailing your achievements and contribution to the community.

• This is your chance to be creative and think outside the box, but keep your application clean and simple, stick to the word limit and answer questions concisely.

• Take note of the deadline of each scholarship you want to apply for and add them to your journal or calendar. Make sure you submit your application on time with all supporting documents.

Applying for a scholarship isn’t just about filling in a form, it’s also your opportunity to stand out from the crowd and be recognised for where you’ve come from and where you need to go.
