Deaf Village Ireland News
We are almost three months in the new Village and there is a great buzz in the centre and everyone is impressed with the modern buildings. There is a very nice atmosphere in the centre. The Sports centre is up and running very well attracting 1300 people with 200 of them from the Deaf community. It is evident that the swimming pool is being used well, with over a hundred families using these facilities. The name of the sports centre is “Inspire Fitness Centre” The membership for the Deaf Community has been very cheap €125.00 for the first three months now it is €150.00. Deaf people must register with DSI before they join membership. Information on this can be sought on the IDS newsletter or [email protected] it is important for the Deaf community to understand the significant business that Inspire Fitness Centre is undertaking to help the centre make money for the running costs of Deaf Village Ireland. All the organisations have moved into the Village. The Deaf Heritage Centre is not open yet. The designers will be coming in shortly. When I spoke with the different organisations, on how they were settling in, everyone loves working in the Village and is so excited about the project. However there were some significant teething problems particularly around the groups wanting to use the Multi- Purpose Hall at particular times which clashed with some of the classes that Inspire Fitness Centre had put on like Spinning, Boxercise, Boot camp, Bums n tums & kettle bell. It is hard to please everyone and we have to work on this together. Most of the Organisations moved in August but Deaf Village Ireland opened for business on the 10th September 2012. We will have an official opening of the centre, probably in January 2013. We are waiting to hear officially from the government if they are available to attend our opening day. We have had lots of visitors from abroad and all around Ireland visiting the centre. There is a lot of publicity about the Deaf Village Ireland. In England everyone is talking about the centre. The English TV crew “Remark” filmed the DVI in September and RTE “Hands On” filmed recently which was on air 18th November.

New Furniture in the Atrium with 55” TV A lot of people really like the new “funky” couches in the Atrium and would like to have another one or two more to fill out the spaces in the Atrium. Fund raising was discussed to help get funds for this. If you have any idea’s or wants to help, please contact the Manager of the DVI. We would appreciate your help. Second TV in Atrium A new 40” TV has been installed outside the church for all organisations to use for displaying events by text or ISL. TV in Reception There is a plan to install a 37” TV in reception to
inform the Deaf community of events in ISL.
Con’s Corner- This Corner is named after Con
Lynch who has worked for the Deaf for 52 years!
Con has dedicated a lot of his free time in
Drumcondra Deaf Club. He was always there to
help and assist anyone. To honour Con for all his
hard work over the years, he will be
remembered in this corner!
Results of the Questionnaire from the Deaf
Community.
Meeting Room will be officially called Rathmines Room The Meeting Room on the left is The Rathmines Room. Booking of rooms [email protected]
Old Chapel Wing will be called Thomas Mahon Building- Named after a Deaf man who was a past pupil of St Joseph’s in 1856 & travelled to America to raise funds to build the Chapel Wing. Thomas Mahon raised 14 million! Which was a lot of money in those days!
A second questionnaire will be sent out to the Deaf community to decide on the name of the Multi- Purpose Hall.
