The character from Marvel comics was first introduced on the big screen in 2009 in the utterly laughable X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The one thing that film got right about the character was the casting. Ryan Reynolds was born to play Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool. Everything else they did with the character was so bad, fans didn’t know if they’d ever get a chance to see him on screen again. But Reynolds was determined. He fought the studio for years to get a proper Deadpool film made, but Fox was wary because R rated comic book movies are a tough sell. After script rewrites, leaked test footage, and budget cuts, Fox final- ly agreed to produce the film. And let me just say, we should all thank them. Deadpool is not only an excellent film, but ranks near the top of the already illustrious collec- tion of Marvel films. Deadpool is the origin story of Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary for hire. After finding out he has cancer and only a short time left to live, he opts to drop everything, including the woman he loves, to undergo a series of experimental tests in an attempt to rid himself of the disease. When things go wrong, he ends up terribly scarred but gifted with accelerated healing powers. With his new abilities and alter ego, Deadpool must hunt down the ones who did this to him in order to get his old life back on track. For those of you with zero knowledge of the source material, let me just say, this is a very adult comic book film. If you have kids, I would highly recommend you watch it first and then decide whether or not it is appropriate. This is an R rated film, and for good reason. Sure he looks a tad like Spiderman, but this ain’t Peter Parker. But in order to do the charac- ter justice, it had to be rated R. With that being said, I’m so glad this came out on Valentine’s week- end because I loved this movie. The writers really nailed the tone and comedy of the comic, and you really can’t say enough about Reynolds in this movie. Much like Robert Downey Jr. IS Ironman, Reynolds IS Deadpool. He is perfect as the merc with a mouth that you really can’t see anyone else playing this role. Almost every line he delivers will make you chuckle, if not fall out of your seat laughing, so much so that you may have to watch mul- tiple times just to hear all the jokes. And he’s just as good at reeling it in when things get serious. I’ve been a fan of his since Van Wilder, and it was a bummer that he really hadn’t been able to break out in a big way. This is the one, and good for him because he put his heart and soul into this, which really shows. The action is top notch, especial- ly considering the film’s budget. The freeway scene, which has been altered a bit from the test footage, is fantastic and serves as a big chunk of the film’s opening. This scene really showcases what Deadpool is capable of, from his gunplay to his razor sharp wit. Part of me wishes they would’ve spent a little more time explaining the motives of the bad guys, but Marvel films have had this problem from day one. In the end, these are small gripes for an otherwise great movie going experience.
