Deadpool is the definition of apassion project. The character fromMarvel comics was first introducedon the big screen in 2009 in theutterly laughable X-Men Origins:Wolverine. The one thing that filmgot right about the character was thecasting. Ryan Reynolds was born toplay Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool.Everything else they did with thecharacter was so bad, fans didn’tknow if they’d ever get a chance tosee him on screen again. ButReynolds was determined. He foughtthe studio for years to get a properDeadpool film made, but Fox waswary because R rated comic bookmovies are a tough sell.

After script rewrites, leaked testfootage, and budget cuts, Fox final-ly agreed to produce the film. Andlet me just say, we should all thankthem. Deadpool is not only anexcellent film, but ranks near thetop of the already illustrious collec-tion of Marvel films.

Deadpool is the origin story ofWade Wilson, a former SpecialForces operative turned mercenaryfor hire. After finding out he hascancer and only a short time left tolive, he opts to drop everything,including the woman he loves, toundergo a series of experimentaltests in an attempt to rid himself ofthe disease. When things go wrong,he ends up terribly scarred but gifted

with accelerated healing powers.With his new abilities and alter ego,Deadpool must hunt down the oneswho did this to him in order to gethis old life back on track.

For those of you with zeroknowledge of the source material,let me just say, this is a very adultcomic book film. If you have kids,I would highly recommend youwatch it first and then decidewhether or not it is appropriate.This is an R rated film, and for goodreason. Sure he looks a tad likeSpiderman, but this ain’t PeterParker. But in order to do the charac-ter justice, it had to be rated R.

With that being said, I’m so gladthis came out on Valentine’s week-

end because I loved this movie. Thewriters really nailed the tone andcomedy of the comic, and you reallycan’t say enough about Reynolds inthis movie. Much like RobertDowney Jr. IS Ironman, ReynoldsIS Deadpool. He is perfect as themerc with a mouth that you reallycan’t see anyone else playing thisrole. Almost every line he deliverswill make you chuckle, if not fallout of your seat laughing, so muchso that you may have to watch mul-tiple times just to hear all the jokes.And he’s just as good at reeling it inwhen things get serious. I’ve been afan of his since Van Wilder, and itwas a bummer that he really hadn’tbeen able to break out in a big way.This is the one, and good for himbecause he put his heart and soulinto this, which really shows.

The action is top notch, especial-ly considering the film’s budget.The freeway scene, which has beenaltered a bit from the test footage, isfantastic and serves as a big chunkof the film’s opening. This scenereally showcases what Deadpool iscapable of, from his gunplay to hisrazor sharp wit. Part of me wishesthey would’ve spent a little moretime explaining the motives of thebad guys, but Marvel films have hadthis problem from day one.

In the end, these are small gripesfor an otherwise great movie goingexperience.

With news recently surfacing that there will

be three final movies in the Fast and Furious franchise,

it appears producers have someone in mind for a villain

role.

Charlize Theron is reportedly being recruited

to play the main villain in the upcoming Fast 8,

which is tentatively scheduled for April 4, 2017.

Nothing has been made official, but filming is expected

to start soon.

The report come on the heels of Theron’s

well-received performance as Imperator Furiosa in last

year’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
