Dear Alumni,I’d like to welcome you to this year’s Grand Annual Alumni Homecoming and
Annual Membership Meeting. ASTIG! A Silver Thanksgiving and Interactive Gathering, the theme for this year captures the innate character of our people in Cavite - fierce, proud and demonstrative. However, having been formed in a Lasallian institution like our university certainly complements these icons and gave it more sophistication. Hence, enterprising, confident and compassionate seem to be more appropriate.
This year, we honor the graduates of the year 1988, a historical year for the institution. As one may recall, Batch ‘88 were the first graduates of De La Salle University-General Emilio Aguinaldo College (DLSU-GEAC), a name generated by the merging of the two institutions in 1987. It was also the year when the blueprints for an excellent university that DLSU-D is now were laid – the proofs emanating from its graduates, the alumni!
Allow me to share to you some of our “ASTIG” accomplishments during this fiscal year from June 2012.
1. The new logo of the De La Salle Dasmariñas Alumni Association highlights the Star of Faith, and represents both the graduates of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas and the General Emilio Aguinaldo College. The De La Salle Dasmariñas Alumni Association’s 16th Grand Alumni Homecoming, on May 18, 2013, is themed “ASTIG!” that stands for A Silver Thanksgiving and Interactive Gathering. Said theme is anchored on a popular Filipino slang “tigas” or tough in English, only reversely spelled, and inspired by the concept of being cool and unique, as defined by Urban Dictionary.

local governance, at iba pa.

6 VERDENG VERDE 2013
Thinking of the past brings back so many memories. But, what do we really remember in the past? Before we move further, let’s have some recollections of years 1988 and 2003.
It was in 1988 that the Iran–Iraq War ends, with an estimated one million lives lost. The Iran–Iraq War, also known as the First Persian Gulf War, was an armed conflict between Iran and Ba’athist Iraq lasting from September 1980 to August 1988, making it the 20th century’s longest conventional war after the Second Sino-Japanese War. Despite calls for ceasefire by the United Nations Security Council, hostilities continued until 20 August 1988. The war finally ended with Resolution 598, a U.N.-brokered ceasefire which was accepted by both sides.
On November, United States presidential election was held. George H. W. Bush is elected over Michael Dukakis. Bush served as the 41st President of the United States (1989–1993). He became the first sitting Vice President of the United States in 200 years to be elected as President of the United States.
The late Benazir Bhutto, a politician and stateswoman who served as the 11th Prime Minister of Pakistan in two non-consecutive terms. In 1988, she became the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state and was also Pakistan’s first (and thus far, only) female prime minister.
The US Drought of 1988 was one of the worst droughts ever in the United States. It was a multi-year drought which began in 1988 and continued into 1989. The drought caused $60 billion in damage. The concurrent heat waves killed 4,800 to 17,000 people in the United States. During the summer of 1988, the drought led to many forest fires in Western North America, including the Yellowstone fire. At its peak, it covered 45% of the United States. The drought of 1988 is not only the costliest drought in US history, but it was the costliest natural disaster in US history, prior to Hurricane Katrina.
In addition, Microsoft released Windows 2.1 in 1988. On the same year, the Morris worm (or Internet worm of November 2, 1988) was distributed via the Internet. It was the first computer worm written by a student at Cornell University, Robert Tappan Morris, and launched from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
At the 60th Academy Awards on April 11, the film, The Last Emperor (directed by Bernardo Bertolucci) bagged nine Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. Whereas, George Michael’s Faith, INXS’s Need You Tonight and George Harrison’s Got My Mind Set On You are some of the songs that achieved the highest chart positions in 1988.
In 2003, the War in Darfur begins. The War in Darfur, or also known as the Darfur Genocide, was a guerrilla conflict or civil war centered on the Darfur region of Sudan. It began in February 2003 when the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) groups in Darfur took up arms, accusing the Sudanese government of oppressing non-Arab Sudanese in favor of Sudanese Arabs.

FEATURESCoincidentally, the Iraq War begins with the invasion of
Iraq by the United States and allied forces. The Iraq War was an armed conflict in Iraq that consisted of two phases. The first was an invasion of Ba’athist Iraq starting on March 20, 2003 by an invasion force led by the US. It was followed by a longer phase of fighting, in which an insurgency emerged to oppose coallition forces and the newly formed Iraqi government. The US military invasion of Iraq reported 25 suicide bombings executed by 32 attackers over the course of that year.
Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) issues a global alert on SARS. Severe Acute Respiratory (SARS) syndrome is a viral respiratory disease in humans which is caused by the SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Between November 2002 and July 2003, an outbreak of SARS in South China and then Hong Kong nearly became a pandemic, with 8,273 cases and 775 deaths worldwide.
Likewise, Apple released Mac OS X Panther in October. In the same year, Concorde made its last commercial flight, bringing the era of airliner supersonic travel to a close.
Releases of sequels took place with movies in 2003. Movies like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Pokémon Heroes, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Freddy vs. Jason, X2: X-Men United, Bad Boys II, Scary Movie 3, and Final Destination 2.
In music, In The Club by rapper 50 Cent, Ignition by R. Kelly and Get Busy by Sean Paul topped the charts. On
the same year, Beyoncé released her debut solo album Dangerously in Love on June 24, 2003 during the Destiny’s Child’s hiatus. The album earned her five Grammy Awards and has sold a total of 4.9 million copies in the US.
In the Philippines, Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program was signed to provide land reform for Filipino farmers. The law was outlined by former President Corazon C. Aquino through Presidential Proclamation 131 and Executive Order 229 on June 22, 1987. The law was finally enacted by the 8th Congress of the Philippines on June 10, 1988.
Later than year, the Philippine inter-island vessel Dona Marilyn sinks with more than 600 passengers and crew members on board caused by typhoon Unsang. The vessel belonged to Sulpicio Lines, the company that also owned the Dona Paz which sank on Dec 20, 1987. Apart from the victims of the sinking of the Dona Marilyn, typhoon Unsang causes the death of some 200 people in the southern Philippines.
On the lighter side, Pugad Baboy, a comic strip created by Filipino cartoonist Apolonio “Pol” Medina, Jr., started appearing in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on May 18, 1988. The strip is about a Manila community of mostly obese people that showcase domestic life and occasionally features adventure, drama, and pure spoof sequences. Its popularity spawned numerous compilations, a live-action television series, and merchandise such as T-shirts and figurines. While on August 21, Magandang Gabi Bayan, a top rated news magazine program that time, had its first airing. The program was anchored by Kabayan Noli de Castro and aimed to expose illegalities of some Philippine government officials as well as to render public service to the Filipino people.
Then, the Tower of Power transmitter was inaugurated by late President Aquino and GMA Network board of directors. Tower of Power, serves as a transmitter facility for both GMA, GMA News TV and Barangay LS 97.1, is located in Tandang Sora, Barangay Culiat, Quezon City. The slogan GMA-7-POWER was used from November 7 to December 1, 1988 as a station ID.

Year 2003 was a very difficult year for the embattled former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, but with clever political skills, she survived and is gearing up for the May 2004 Presidential election.
A group of 321 armed soldiers who called themselves “Bagong Katipuneros” led by Army Capt. Gerardo Gambala and LtSG. Antonio Trillanes IV of the Philippine Navy took over the Oakwood Premier Ayala Center serviced apartment tower in Makati City on July 27 to show the Filipino people the alleged corruption of the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo administration. They demanded for the resignations of President Arroyo and Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes.
The ordeal of Philippines Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide captured significant public interest and caused a near-constitutional crisis when he was nearly impeached by the House of Representatives. On October 23, the House of Representatives filed an impeachment complaint against the chief justice, with plans to debate and formally vote on the complaint shortly thereafter. However, on November 10, in a 13-1 decision, the Supreme Court ruled the impeachment complaint unconstitutional.
On the side note, Sarah Geronimo was the top OPM artist that time. Geronimo competed in the singing competion, Star For A Night, hosted by Filipino pop singer Regine Velasquez. At the age of 14, Geronimo won the competition early in 2003 and automatically rose to fame. Prizes included Php 1 million cash and a managerial contract to Vicente Del Rosario, owner of Viva Artists Agency. She was given the title of Pop Star Princess as a result of the show.
Ang Tanging Ina, a comedy film, starring Ai-Ai de las Alas and Eugene Domingo, was a phenomenal hit in 2003. It became one of highest grossing Filipino film to date with a gross of Php 178 million nationwide from its theatrical run.
While on TV, it was the year that the Asianobela conquered the Philippines. ABS-CBN broadcasted Meteor
Garden on May 2003. Meteor Garden is a 2001 Taiwanese drama starring Barbie Hsu, Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Vanness Wu and Ken Chu. Who are more popular by the names of Shan Cai and the F4: Dao Ming Si, Hua Ze Lei, Mei Zuo and Xi Men. It gained so much popularity than that it’s ratings reaching over 40% and F4 posters, CDs and shirts were everywhere. The popularity of this TV drama started the so-called “Asianovela craze” and “Meteor Garden mania” in the Philippines.
In our Alma Mater, 1988 marked the foremost batch of De La Salle University – Emilio Aguinaldo College (now De La Salle University – Dasmariñas). It was the first year since General Emilio Aguinaldo College (GEAC) - Cavite transferred its ownership and management to Frere (Saint) Benilde Romancon Educational Foundation Inc., a nonstock, nonprofit sister corporation of De La Salle University, Inc. in 1987. Afterward, DLSU-D continues to expand in the succeeding years.
A lot of things had happened. Denis Waitley once said, “Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.” Together with this year’s Grand Homecoming Jubilarian (batch 1988) and host (batch 2003), let us commorate the years that led us to what we are now. Guided by Lasallian teachings, may we continue to live the legacy of faith and service, as we carry out our mission in the spirit of communion.
Here’s for the 25 years of De La Salle University – Dasmariñas and for 25 years more!

Aleli Toledo, this year’s recipient of the De La Salle Alumni Association-Dasmariñas
Chapter (DLSAADC) Outstanding Alumna, finished her degree in Bachelor in Elementary Education in 1992 with Distinction. She was first employed at Dasmariñas Elementary School (DES) as Teacher 1 in Mathematics in 1992. The passing of years, seemingly, did not waiver her passion to teach as it only improved. Hence, years later, she assumed the ranks of Teacher III in 2001, Master Teacher I in 2006 and Master Teacher II in 2011.
Toledo’s professional achievements came simultaneously with a lot more recognitions, owing them to her zeal and perseverance. She was regarded as “Most Outstanding Teacher” in DES for seven non-consecutive years; she was conferred “Guro of the Year” in District 1 of Dasmariñas in 2003-2004, “First Place Outstanding Mathematics Teacher” in 2005 Regional Search for
the DLSAADC Outstanding Alumna Awardee
Outstanding Elementary Teacher in Region IV-A; and was chosen by the DLSU-D College of Education Alumni Association as Outstanding Alumna 2011 in the field of education. To top it all, she was a “National Finalist” of the Metrobank Foundation Search for Outstanding Teachers in 2010.
What actually accentuated Toledo’s success was her genuine love for the young learners, which was not confined in the corners of her classroom but transcended across barriers to reach out to those who cannot afford to undergo formal education. She ardently participated and served as volunteer in several community outreach projects in her locale, and, after gathering sufficient and essential experiences and learning the “secrets of the trade”, co-founded several free education programs. “Kidlets for Christ Learning Center” in 2009, with Iglesia Evangelica Unida de Cristo (UNIDA ) and Brgy. Mataas na Burol was intended for pre-elementary and elementary-aged children to learn
“basic skills in arts, numeracy, reading and comprehension integrated with Bible lessons; while “Project DREAM KID” (Developing Readiness in English and Mathematics for KIDS) aimed to equip indigent elementary school-aged children with essential concepts in English and Mathematics.
Toledo also went beyond educating the youth when she co-founded the Mushroom Production Livelihood Program in 2011 as an alternative source of income for Barangay San Agustin II. She likewise chaired several beautification and health-related campaigns in her community such as feeding programs for indigent children, tree-planting, Oplan Linis Ganda, and anti-dengue campaign, among others.

represented the university and Brother President Gus Boquer at the 20th Association of Southeast and East Asia Catholic Colleges and Universities Conference held at Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages,Kohsiung, Taiwan on August 22-25.
The conference, themed “Catholic Higher Education and Sustainability in the Modern World: From Service-Learning to Social Enterprise,” paved way to the discussion of relevant topics including social entrepreneurship, Service Learning Programs (SLP) and empirical teaching experience.
The social entrepreneurship delved into the local social context via cooperation, collaboration and communication with people. This includes microfinance thru lending capital to local partner communities for small scale business, and livelihood projects by teaching the local partners how to do small business through trainings in making rags, delicacies, among others. SLP, on the other hand, is involved with free tutorial programs for slow learners, faculty volunteers for out-of-school youth or adults, and donation thru pledges. Finally, empirical teaching experience supports the social entrepreneurship and SLP by integrating the service learning programs in the curriculum, and sustainability of the SLP thru formulation of a long-term plan.
In related events, Dr. Ramos shared her expertise during the seminar on School Resource Mobilization at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei, Taiwan on August 21. On the same day, Dr. Ramos met with Dr. Charles Huang, a friend and major benefactor of the University where she formally invited Dr. Huang to serve as the guest speaker in the Success Stories Series slated on February 2013, during the Silver Jubilee Celebration of DLSU-D.

Graduating from college is just another chapter of our lives. The corporate jungle which awaits us will surely test our limits and being happy at work may
be a hard battle to win. The question is can someone really strive to be happy at work? Is work supposed to give us happiness?
Let me first give you a short of disclaimer, I am not pretending to be the guru of some sort who knows how to handle work pressure in any situation. Let us say that the tips and scenarios you will read is part of my experience and observations which may help us in travelling to a happier career.
Most people spend the majority of their lives at work. Being happy at work is essential to every people for it may harm your professional and personal life if you are not. These are the tips that will help you find happiness at work.
Seeking by defining: what is work happiness and satisfaction for you?
Happiness at work is responsibility of both employer and employee but I do believe that greater responsibility lies on employees. Happiness is largely a choice. To choose, we must know what does being happy mean to us. Is it feeling the belongingness and being valued? Is it seeing the completion of assigned tasks? Is it the salary or benefits? Everyone has his own definition of happiness and choosing to be happy may sound simple yet it’s very difficult to put into action. Your choices at work will define your experience. You can choose to be happy at work only if you know what will make you happy.
Stop complaining, stay focused and think positive
One of the biggest challenges of people being unsuccessful in searching the happiness at work is because of the complaining. Complaining, especially the unreasonable ones bring negative energy to the work place. Add to it all the negative people that surround you that bring gossips and rumors which will distract you and will make a very difficult environment to build joyful and happy workplace. So avoid complaining especially if the issue you need to complain will resolve by itself naturally. If you need to, discuss it with gentleness then find ways to diffuse it otherwise better to resist complaining. Experts tell us that “sometimes the route to happiness depends more on what you don’t do,” complaining is big part of it. Complaining and other negative activities will disrupt harmony in the workplace. Remember that “harmony is the strength and support of all societies” which must be considered all the time. So, stay focused, avoid negativity and create a mind-set that focus on positive then you will be productive and happy.
Build affinity
We are social beings. We need and learn to relate and connect to others not just as co-worker but also on personal side as well. Make friends at workplace. Take time to get to know them. You may share common interest with your colleagues which may bring boring work to more interesting one. Be sincere and genuine, show approachability and warmth towards them. Make them feel that they are important. Through these you may build affinity with others. “Liking and enjoying your coworkers are hallmarks of a positive and happy work experience.”

CAREER TIPS
Create, learn, and be the best
If you are fed up of the boredom in your work because of doing the same thing over and over again then it will make your work a hell to endure. A simple tweak to your job description may help you regain your happiness in your workplace. You can create set of goals for your work and try to use different methods doing it. By this you will learn new things. New insights in your work will stimulate your mental faculties which can give you ability to set your own high standard. Higher personal standard will give you new boost to work hard and be the best, “recognizing and being proud of your own skills and abilities”. Creating, learning new things and recognizing your abilities may help you win back your self-worth, your interest to your job, your happiness.
Avoid extra baggage at the workplace: keeping your personal problems personal
Lose of focus will affect your work performance. Difficulty to concentrate or be happy at work may occur when you are preoccupied with personal issues. Yes it is true that nobody’s life is ever going to be completely problem-free, but also remember that as we need to let go of work to have enjoyable time at home, it is equally important to leave our personal worries at home so we can be effective in our work places. Believe me that it will bring us more worries if we lose our job due to unpleasant work results.
Learn to accept and manage disappointments
Disappointment is a constant part of life, be it in personal and at work. Remember that nothing is perfect. Unexpected situations may happen and in constant change. Experts advise us not to be so attached to the idea that we should be happy at work. We must strive to be happy and part of the process is accepting the facts of life and managing disappointments.
Still not happy, push the emergency button: Job Searching
If all of the above tips did not make you happier at work, reevaluating your employer, your job, your entire career or yourself is high time. You don’t need to spend your life doing work you hate in unfriendly environment. Feeling unhappy if not addressed may grow into a tragedy. Before your unhappiness at work exhaust all your energy, you better push the red button. Utilize your non-working time doing some job searching. Job searching may help you assess and recollect your current job responsibilities or refuel your desire to achieve your personal and professional goals. Above all, it will only be a matter of time until you can say “I quit and time to move on” to your job.
It might be difficult to experience more joy at work but you may find your “oil of joy” in your workplace if you know the rules. No job is meant to make us unhappy. Experts remind us, to be happy at work we must understand our role in the organization, our relationship with work and how we relate to people. Above and beyond that, how we accept and manage disappointments are part of the whole process of “working”.

With a very challenging economy, people are now struggling to make ends meet. Earning extra pesos is something most of us need but if you’re working a full-time job and have other responsibilities to take
care of, finding a second job can be a challenge in itself. Fortunately, there are a number of online and offline opportunities that could give your income that much-needed boost.
Here are some ideas that you can use to increase your income, starting today:
1. Join a direct sales company
Direct Selling industry is one of the biggest and dynamic industries in the world nowadays and one of the easiest ways to earn some extra cash, especially if you sell products you love. All you need are brochures and share it to your coworkers during non-working time, to your friends, to your relatives, etc. Direct selling allows people to start their own business away from a retail location and this means that there are virtually no overhead costs for operating and since independent consultants work closely with a direct selling company, there is also no need to develop a product base or establish a new brand name.
2. Become a photographer or videographer
If you’re already handy with a camera and have artistic juices that are longing to come out, why not start covering weddings, birthdays, etc. People always like to have good memories on photo and video. This is a perfect side job for those who work during weekdays. A good friend of mine who is working as full time medical representative earns extra 15k to 30k a month covering special events and more importantly he does what he loves best.
3. Start buying and selling items online
Sites like eBay, sulit.com, and ayosdito.ph make it simple to buy and sell physical and digital products for profit. You’ll just need some basic Internet and marketing skills to get this going. Selling online can generate a modest extra income in a very short amount of time. Do you believe that you can earn as much as 5k to 10k in less than four hours in buying and selling a used car online? In buying and selling your products, you need to review all of the requirements and fees involved as a seller on these sites so you can choose one that will generate the most profit.

CAREER TIPS
4. Cook extra and sell
My wife loves to cook. Every time she prepares desserts for our kids, she makes sure that she has extra to sell to her coworkers. Orders started to come in during special occasions like birthdays, Christmas, New Year, etc. which surely yielded good amount of profits!
5. Do freelance work
Many jobs nowadays can be done on a freelance basis. You can accept freelance or project based editing, writing or marketing jobs. Web based companies like Odesk and Sologig can assist you in finding freelance job opportunity that fits for you.
6. Start blogging
If you have expertise on something, no matter how obscure or trivial, and you think people want to know about it you can start blogging. The beauty of running a blog is that you don’t need to quit your day job. Advertisements, recommended products, and maybe even your own product can fund your blogging and bring in profits. Though it may take time to build credibility, you may write articles to other sites which may give you additional income.
7. Become a consultant
Like blogging, people are always looking for experts to improve their business or non-profit organizations. For instance, you may help making their business up to certain code, or to making it more attractive to customers can boost their visibility and spread the word about their business. Or helping non-profit organization develop a plan for fundraising, and then oversee the process. Individuals use consultants, too. Some people use consultants for financial advice, while others may pay a consultant to teach them how to set up and maintain a garden.
Making extra money is one critical lifestyle change. I’m sharing this to show you that there are side jobs that can be done while you’re working a 40-hour per week job. Just make sure you set a smart schedule that lets you diligently focus on your work, without throwing the rest of your life out of balance.
