A group of women from the targeted communities were selected based on their personal characteristics and interest in working with young children. They were trained in child development, nutrition, health and safety, and education of children from birth to 5 years of age. They also learned organizational and administrative skills, as well as methods for working with families and community organizations. Thirteen child care homes were set up through this project. rural communities in the sierra and jungle of Peru. Faculty and students of medicine, dentistry, nursing and psychology participated. Dr. Castro also coordinated the project's Community Development Program and the Woman and Child Development sub-program at poor urban settings. Participatory education activities to empower women and to promote integral development of children under six years of age were carried out with families and community organizations as part of the program. Women who participated in grassroots organizations received training on leadership, community organizing and conflict resolution. The project's activities were developed working simultaneously with 5 community health centers, 8 elementary schools, 20 formal and non-formal preschools, and 50 grassroots organizations. Funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation (Award: $1,500,000).
