Hail to the Red & the Blue! The fall season has already

arrived in my hometown

of Portland, Oregon. The

temperatures are leveling out around

65 degrees and the dark clouds

filling the sky love producing rain on

football Saturdays.

Here at SMU, the weather is a

completely different story. Blue

sky, humidity and the acceptance of

sweat on the Boulevard make for one of the best game-day

experiences.

This week, SMU has a great opportunity to show their

improvement as Washington State (from that rainy and

cloudy northwest) travels south, trying to spring an upset.

The Cougars are hoping to come out of here surviving the

climate change, and with a win under their belts.

Two years ago, the Cougars got the best of SMU, but much

has changed since then. Playing a big-time PAC 10 program

at home is exactly what the Mustangs need right now.

Washington State is an opportunity–

An opportunity for fans to show their continued support

by packing Gerald J. Ford stadium; an opportunity for recruits

to see the talent that SMU is beginning to accumulate, and

then jump on the bandwagon; an opportunity for spirit and

passion to continually be brewed inside us.

Washington State is more than “the game before TCU

comes to town,” but rather it is a turning point of the season.

Yes, families will start arriving in town over the next week,

but we haven’t gotten to next week yet. The importance of

this weekend’s game cannot be expressed enough. At one

win and one loss right now, the Mustangs are on the verge

of something special, once again. Of course, there are, and

always will be, those doubters that cannot get over the fact

that SMU was great in the early 1980s, and feel it will never

return back to that level. Win, and you prove all the doubters

wrong once more.

After the win (yes, I know I am speaking optimistically

here), the Mustangs will move to 2-1 and have a winning

record once again. Winning is slowly becoming the norm

around here again. SMU is 6-2 in their last eight games, and

6-1 in their last seven home games. Now is the time to grab

your friends, neighbors and even that bandwagon fan on the

side of the road, and bring them to the game.

I traveled to Texas Tech two weekends ago to cheer on

SMU in the first contest of the season. Wearing a blue shirt

with 85 other passionate Mustang fans and holding a sign that

read “Life After Death” made for a great afternoon. When

I got home, a die-hard SMU fan that could not make the trip

asked me about the sign.

We talked about the horrible past, and came to a conclusion

that maybe we need to begin writing a new story for football

at SMU. We always want to make sure to remember the

greats that have played previously at SMU, and boy have we

had some good ones, but we need to try to move out of that

shadow cast onto SMU by the ‘Death Penalty.’

I think Washington State provides the Mustangs with

exactly that chance.

Enjoy the Boulevard because it is truly a special event. The

sun is out and the grills are on, but remember to walk, run or

parade on down to the stadium in time for kickoff. Winning

is the ultimate cure for a sunburn, and the perfect way to cap

off a great Saturday. And besides, we all know what to look

forward to after a dominating performance over Washington

State – bring on those Horned Frogs!

Pony Up!

The clock is ticking as the SMU Mustangs prepare to take on the Washington State Cougars at Ford Stadium Saturday afternoon.

It has been almost a year since the Cougars devoured the Mustangs 30-27 last year at Martin Stadium. Washington State came back 17 points in the third quarter, leaving it up to their kicker, Nico Grasu to boot a field goal for the win in overtime.

It was the only win for the Cougars that season, compared to the Ponies who overcame the loss and went on to win eight games in 2009, including the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

The Mustangs are currently 23-point favorites to win.

Both teams are coming off their first wins of the 2010 season in games played last Saturday. Washington State defeated Montana State on Sept. 11,

23-22 thanks to Grasu’s 18-yard field goal kicked just two minutes before the end of the fourth quarter.

It was the Cougar’s first win since they beat SMU last year. The same day, SMU clobbered UAB 28-7 in their first conference game of the year.

SMU quarterback Kyle Padron will meet WSU’s Jeff Tuel for the first time on the field this Saturday. Tuel was 18 of 29 for 204 yards for the Cougars win over Montana State. Padron was 18 of 33 for 145 yards against UAB.

As a freshman last season, Tuel finished the year throwing for 789 yards and six touchdowns. Padron completed 1,922 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Mustangs and the Cougars were both upset in the their non-conference season openers. Washington State was creamed by Oklahoma State on Sept. 4. at Boone Pickens Stadium, losing 65-17. Tuel completed only 14 of 29 passes and threw a total of 212 yards, with one touchdown.

Sept. 5, just a day after Washington

State’s loss, Texas Tech beat SMU 35-27 at Jones AT&T Stadium. Padron completed 21 of 28 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns.

In both games it came down to the teams kickers. Cougar kicker, Grasu and Mustang kicker Matt Szmanski hold the two longest field goals in NCAA FBS so far this season.

Grasu connected on a 56-yard field goal in the second quarter against OSU, the sixth longest field goal kick in Washington State history. At Tech, Szmanski booted a 61-yard field goal, his career best.

On Saturday, SMU Head Coach June Jone’s run and shoot style offense will take on Washington State coach Paul Wulff ’s scout style offense. It is the coaches third season with their respective teams.

The CBS- televised game is set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, where the C-USA Mustangs will take on the Pack 10 Cougars.

Johnson is developing into one of SMU’s most explosive playmakers on offense. Last year, he was named to the Conference USA All Freshman Team. In the opener vs. Texas Tech Johnson nabbed an amazing one handed catch which was featured on Sportscenter’s top 10 plays. Last week vs. UAB, Johnson led the Mustangs in receiving with 7 receptions for 45 yards and 2 touchdowns.

3 DARIUSJOHNSON

WR • Missouri City, TXBanjo is considered to be a defensive stalwart and a leader in the Mustang secondary. Last Year, he was second on the team with 86 tackles and also had one interception along with three forced fumbles. Banjo is the fi rst SMU player to be awarded the No. 23 in honor of SMU's legendary Jerry LeVias, the player who broke the color barrier in the defunct Southwest Conference. Last week vs. UAB, he recorded 6 tackles including 5 solos.

23 CHRISBANJO

DB • Sugar Land, TXInitially recruited to play linebacker, Line has stepped up as SMU’s feature running back. The sophomore scored seven touchdowns in 2009 and was considered a short yardage back. Line has already eclipsed last year's rushing total, proving that he is more than just a big back. Last week vs. UAB, Line rushed for a career high 122 yards and two touchdowns.

COUGARS TO WATCH

Montgomery is looking for revenge after SMU cut his season short last year in the third game of the season when a hit on his leg caused compartment syndrome. Despite the injury, the University of California transfer recorded the only 100-yard rushing game by a Cougar in 2009. Last week vs. Montana St., Montgomery rushed for 116 yards and one touchdown.

21JAMES MONTGOMERY

RB • Rancho Cordova, CALast week vs. Montana St., Beck registered a career-high 10 tackles including fi ve solos and one interception. In 2009, he recorded 41 tackles and two interceptions including one he returned 67 yards for a touchdown against SMU. Beck transferred to Washington St. from Glendale College after being named to the NJCAA All Region First Team in 2007.

13 MYRONBECK

LB • Seattle, WALast season, Tuel found success after being inserted as the starting quarterback midway through the season. He became only the second true freshman in school history to start at quarterback and did not disappoint — throwing for 789 yards and six touchdowns. Last week vs. Montana St., Tuel passed for 204 yards and two touchdowns.

Go M-U-S-T-A-N-G-S goThe Daily Campus takes a closer look at the SMU Spirit Team

TYLER WILLIAMS/ The Daily Campus

SMU senior Brooke Wright, foreground, cheers with the SMU cheerleading squad last Saturday at the SMU vs. UAB football game.

[email protected]

“ 5-4-3-2 give a cheer for SMU, M-U-S-T-A-N-G-S. Go Stangs go,” Briana Darensburg shouts from the sidelines of Ford Stadium, along with 34 other SMU cheerleaders who cheer for the Mustangs.

Darensburg is one of the 14 members to join the SMU Spirit Team’s new Blue Cheer Team this year. The Spirit Team now includes two separate cheer teams thanks to new coach Brandy McCollum.

McCullom, a Texas native, recently returned to her home state after four years of helping her husband coach cheerleading at Oklahoma State, McCollum's alma mater.

It has been four weeks since McCollum has been on the Hilltop and already she says she feels great. She is responsible for coaching both the Red and Blue teams at SMU.

“ I’m very picky about how they perform, the way they look and the things they do. I expect a lot, and so far its going ok,” McColllum says about her role at SMU.

McCullom must be doing something right; she has already received a lot of positive feedback.

“The new coach is very organized, it’s awesome,” says junior accounting major and Red team member Morgan McVicker.

“She likes things a certain way, which is great because its makes us push hard, and if we mess up we fix it. We

are starting to look more like a collegiate team.”The Spirit Team means business, and with the addition of a new team this year there

is added competition. The teams are organized based on talent. The new Blue team allows people with a

passion for cheering to show their spirit at the sidelines of home football games, as well as at some home volleyball matches and basketball games.

While the blue team only practices two days a week, the red team practices at least three times a week for a total of six hours or more.

“We all lead by example,” says junior Red team member Ryan Ross. “When people see our positive attitudes its raises their moral and spirit. We are here to support the athletes, and to provide extra entertainment. It gives us an opportunity to show off our athleticism skills as well.”

Of the 18 women and three men on the small coed Red team, all can successfully land a round off handspring back tuck at the least and each member has a good knowledge of overall cheer leading.

In addition to cheering all Mustang home football and basketball games, the team also travels to some away games, and competes in the National Cheerleaders Association Championship every spring.

SMU is the birthplace of modern cheer leading. Former SMU alumni cheerleader Lawrence Herkimer, who originated the pom-pom, spirit stick and the Herkie jump, founded the NCA.

Last year the SMU cheer leading team placed third at NCA, adding to their two second place wins in 2008 and 2009.

This April, the Red team will compete in the NCA Daytona Beach International Championship.

Until then, the spirited team will continue to practice and decorate the SMU sidelines, cheering on the Mustangs full heartedly.

With football season just kicking off, the cheer squads are ready to show off their skills.

And how does the team handle the fall Texas heat?"We make sure to stay hydrated. It's important to drink water whenever we get a break,"

says Darensburg. Despite temperatures in the nineties last weekend, the SMU cheerleaders appeared

flawless with big grins on their faces, cheering proudly and loudly adding volume to the fans in the bleachers.

Look for the Spirit Team at SMU's next football game this Saturday as the Mustangs take on the Washington State Cougars, and the cheerleaders take on the sidelines.

The Boulevard

SCENE ON THE BOULEVARD

Mustang fans filled the Boulevard on Saturday Sept. 11 to cheer on the football team as they played the UAB Blazers.

The Boulevard was filled with alumni, students and fans of all ages as they barbecued, reminisced and revelled in that Pony spirit.

The fans all gathered at Ford Stadium that night to watch a stunning defeat of the Blazers in a 28-7 win for the Mustangs.

Last week's game was SMU's first home game and first Boulevard of the season. Mustang fans held true to the spirit required to kick off the Mustang football team in what promises to be one of the most exciting football seasons in SMU's history.

The Daily Campus will feature photos from the previous week's Boulevard in every edition of The Boulevard.

Readers are encouraged to submit their own photos for conisderation to [email protected].
