For construction companies, charterschools offer profitable work that is largely
immunefrom broad-er economictrends.
One firm, Aventura-based ESJCapital Partners, got started in charter schoolconstruction in 2008 and has completed sev-eral South Florida projects since, with more inthe pipeline. Even construction industry giantslike Turner Construction are getting involvedin the sector. SEE STORY, PAGE A7

fast-growing Chartwell LawOffices, which expanded fromfour attorneys to 66 since formingin Pennsylvania in 2002, startedthe new year by opening a Miamioffice.
It brings in Jerome A. Pivnikand Caroline Nitsche Carlson,who have practiced together formore than 20 years in the litiga-tion boutique Pivnik & Nitscheand previously with KattenMuchin Zavis.
The new partners specialize inproperty insurance defense workas well as commercial and em-ployment litigation. The Miamibase is considered a jumping-off point for work along the Gulf Coast and in Latin America.

by Adolfo Pesquera, DBR. Gov. RickScott has an early chance to fill a vacan-cy on the 4th District Court of Appeal.But he is stuck with a list of four finalists
forwarded to his predeces-sor because the JudicialNominating Commissionis refusing to submit anew and expanded list.
Scott’s general counsel
asked the commission forthe maximum six nomi-nees instead of the four sent to then-Gov.Charlie Crist. The JNC met behind closeddoors and came out with the status quo.
In a similar case decided by theFlorida Supreme Court in 2009, the gov-ernor was told he had no authority toreject a JNC’s list or manipulate its pro-cedures. SEE STORY, PAGE A2
