A PRAYER FOR THOSE
AFFECTED BY THE HURRICANE KATRINA
Loving God, we ask you in this time of great fear and sorrow to be with all who suffer and experience pain, loss and death through the tragedy of the hurricane in New Orleans. Through the inspiration of your Son Jesus, the Prince of Peace, lead us in ways that can assist those affected by this tragedy. May we join our efforts with all people of good will to bring your healing to those who are in need. Strengthen and comfort all who grieve the loss of friends and relatives. Strengthen and guide those who are working in relief efforts – providing comfort, food, shelter and whatever is needed to bring healing to people’s lives. Help them bring your peace and your justice to this troubled area. Mary, consoler of the grieving pray for us Jesus, healer of those in need graciously hear us. God of Peace and justice, guide our efforts.

ShareLife To Channel Aid For Victims of Hurricane Katrina ShareLife, the charitable fundraising arm of the Archdiocese of Toronto, announced that it will channel funds to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. Hundreds of thousands of families are homeless in the wake of the violent hurricane that struck the Gulf Coast last week. Funds collected will be sent to Catholic Charities USA, the organization commissioned by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to represent the Catholic community in times of domestic disaster. They will be offering both short and long-term relief to the affected regions. Schools may wish to be involved in fundraising efforts for this cause. We ask that schools gather funds raised and send one large cheque to ShareLife marked – “ShareLife Hurricane Katrina Relief”. Some schools may wish to channel funds through their local parish. If this is the case, we invite you to let us know of your efforts so that we may recognize your school accordingly. Should you have additional questions, do not hesitate to contact our office. Thank you for your ongoing support. Those wishing to make a donation may do so in the following ways: Online at www.sharelife.org Through their parish, making cheques payable to “ShareLife – Name of Parish – Hurricane Katrina Relief” By credit card through the ShareLife office at: 1-800-263-2595

WELCOME BACK MESSAGE FROM
THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
Welcome back for the 2005-2006 school year. I hope that the summer months have provided you with the opportunity of getting much deserved rest and relaxation. I would like to extend a special welcome to those students and staff joining us for the first time, as well as to those who are returning. I extend best wishes for a successful school year I would like to stress the importance of the role of each and every one of us within the Board -- trustees, senior staff, principals and vice-principals, teachers, support staff, students, parents and the parish. My vision is to lead within a model that respects each other and to live in an educational community in which each person is felt valued. We are guided by the Board’s priorities, which are to nurture our Catholic community,
to improve student learning and achievement and to build capacity to lead and learn. In our various roles in Catholic education we are called upon to provide a caring, safe learning environment for our students so that they will achieve success to their full potential. As a Catholic school system, we will continue to face challenges. There are some who will continue to question our right to exist. However, by working together in an atmosphere of trust and respect, I am confident that TCDSB is up to the challenge. Our collective efforts will result in a revitalized school system for our students, parents and staff. As a spirit driven community, we draw comfort and strength that we are not alone and that together we will overcome challenges that come along. One of the challenges the world is facing is the devastation in the Gulf Coast, and especially in New Orleans, where hundreds of thousands of families have lost everything to hurricane Katrina. In light of this disaster, we offer our thoughts and prayers for them and their loved ones. We know that the rebuilding efforts will require massive financial assistance. We can help individually and collectively in the relief efforts. I encourage the TCDSB community to participate in the fundraising campaign for the victims of hurricane Katrina coordinated through ShareLife. We as a Catholic community will continue to pray for those who have lost their lives to this natural disaster, and to those who have been impacted by this tragedy. Having spent 25 years as a teacher and administrator with this Board, it is great to be back after an absence of eight years. Your support and encouragement is greatly appreciated. The Toronto Catholic District School Board is a system of which I have always been proud. I am excited about the opportunity to serve as your Director of Education and look forward to meeting many of you as I visit schools in the upcoming months. Best wishes for a great 2005-2006.

STUDENT TRANSPORTATION SERVICES
2005 – 2006 EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCE TRANSPORTATION
The transportation for elementary school students approved under the Exceptional Circumstance Regulation of the Board Policy S.T. 01 will only be provided subject to space availability on existing vehicles, and at no additional cost to the Board. If a student lives on an existing bus route, transportation will not be provided under Exceptional Circumstance, as service is already available.
A list of students that have been accommodated to receive transportation has been sent to the respective school and these names have been included on the Exceptional Circumstance Special Education List of eligible students.
Limited funds are available to supply T.T.C. tickets for secondary school students applying under Exceptional Circumstance regulation of the Board Policy. Details to follow. MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION
Medical transportation will only be provided, at no additional cost to the Board, subject to space availability on existing vehicles. Requests for medical transportation (for students only) should not be processed as an Exceptional Circumstance, but rather as a regular Request For Transportation (FORM PD 0200, (R09/98) together with the medical certificate (FORM PD 0230, (09/98). The transportation request will not be processed if the Board’s medical certificate (FORM PD 0230, (09/98) has not been properly completed and signed by the physician. Where students live on a regular route, the existing vehicle will provide bus service. PROCESSING TRANSPORTATION REQUESTS - GENERAL GUIDELINES
In order for the Student Transportation Services Department to set up services for the 2004-2005 school term, we will require your cooperation to ensure that full documentation is provided on the Request for Transportation Form (FORM PD 0200, (R09/98). Requests for transportation cannot be processed unless they are properly documented and approved in accordance with the Board’s Transportation Policy. Procedures to provide Kindergarten Transportation will be distributed under separate cover.
TRANSPORTATION – EXCURSIONS
All Toronto Catholic District School Board schools are responsible for arranging their own transportation for excursions.
♦ It is advisable to create PO’s when ordering buses for excursions. By creating a purchase order, you ensure that the monies are available for payment to the vendor. As in the past, you can also use the school CIBC Purchase Card.
♦ Unfortunately the purchase of TTC tickets cannot be made with the Purchase Cards and will remain a cash transaction. Discussions have occurred with local TTC ticket distributors to determine if local ticket purchase demands could be met. Large quantities of tickets have been identified as difficult to handle at the local level. Because of this difficulty, purchases of large quantities of TTC tickets can be coordinated through the Student Transportation Services Department, as per the current normal procedure.
♦ In addition to the foregoing, the purchase of wheelchair excursion transportation will continue to be ordered centrally through the Student Transportation Services Department.
♦ As during the previous three school terms it is not necessary to send bus excursion forms to the Student Transportation Services Department.
♦ The Excursions Standard Operating Procedures, which will include a list of approved carriers and a revised price listing, will be e-mailed to all schools.
If you have any questions, please call the Student Transportation Services Department at 416-229-5313

STUDENT TRANSPORTATION SERVICES
The following is an outline of the minimum requirements necessary to process a request for transportation and associated timelines:
1. As in previous years, during the first few weeks of school, the Student Transportation Services Department will require additional time from the date a request is received to implement service. However, due to the recently negotiated coterminous sharing agreement, a coordination of requisition deadlines and transportation start dates must be implemented. Adherence to the following schedule should ensure transportation by the scheduled start date. After September 30, 2005, requisitions received will revert back to the normal 72-hour minimum prior to the commencement of transportation services. Parents should NOT be notified that transportation service would be provided unless confirmation is received from the Student Transportation Services Department. The following is the proposed schedule for processing requests for transportation during the peak period:
Requests Processed by the Transportation Department Student Transportation Start Date Wednesday, August 17th – Monday, August 29th Tuesday, September 6th
Tuesday, August 30th Tuesday, September 6th
Friday, September 2nd Friday, September 9th
Wednesday, September 7th Tuesday, September 13th
Monday, September 12th Friday, September 16th
Wednesday, September 14th Tuesday, September 20th
Monday, September 19th Friday, September 23rd
Wednesday, September 21st Tuesday, September 27th
Monday, September 26th Friday, September 30th
Wednesday, September 28th Tuesday, October 4th
Friday, September 30th Wednesday, October 5th
2. All requests for transportation are initiated at the central office, Curriculum Support Unit and school levels.
Requests cannot be accepted over the telephone and each addition, change and cancellation must be transmitted to the Student Transportation Services Department on the Request for Transportation Form. Schools that have/will be submitting requests for Junior Kindergarten students must indicate the date when service is to commence. In cases where requests have been submitted with an unspecified start date, a memo will be required to activate the service. This memo should have the following information:
• Student name and student number • Requested date of service
If further information is required, please contact the Student Transportation Services Department

The painting is entitled “Growing in Truth and Love” the motto for St. Dorothy’s School. You will see many symbols representative of our Catholic Faith over a serene background. It represents the paradise that was given to us by our Creator as stated in the Book of Genesis. This passage of the bible being opened in the top right hand corner. Many of God’s marvellous creatures co-exist serenely in this peaceful environment. You will see the continents bridging all peoples of the world. This unification inspires harmony, love and togetherness on our planet, in our community and in our school. The Board logo which represents “Faith, Hope and Charity” is delivered by a dove, symbol of peace. In Christian symbolism, fish are of great significance. They are the symbol for Christ. The trees reaching up to the sky represent growth, both physically and spiritually. Water symbolizes many things for Christians. It is the symbol of eternal life. By being baptized in water, we symbolically go through the death, burial and resurrection through which we become children of God. The Holy Trinity is forever present. God, the Father is sculpted into the mountainside ever present and always protecting His priceless creation. The Holy Sprit is present in the highlighted horizon on the upper falls. In the water, you will notice the fish, symbol for Jesus circling the School Board Logo of Faith, Hope and Charity. These are values which He taught and lived by. The children in the painting are striving to reach the summit. They are helping one another. They are headed towards the gifts of the Holy Spirit. They are “Growing in Truth and Love.”
