SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Jesus took with him Peter and John and James and went up the mountain to pray.

While he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white…

Then from a cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my chosen; listen to him!”

Luke 9:28-36

TORONTO COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EVENTS (Earth Day Leadership Projects) The City of Toronto's 4th Annual 20-Minute Toronto Makeover will take place on Friday, April 20, 2006. Last year the TCDSB displayed a phenomenal participation rate and demonstrated our Board's commitment to our community and the environment. In response to Mayor David Miller’s formal invitation, the TCDSB encourages all schools and administrative sites to participate in the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover. The 20-Minute Toronto Makeover is a city-wide initiative, and part of Mayor Miller’s Clean City, Beautiful City Campaign. Students and teachers are asked to take 20 minutes out of their day and clean up litter in any public space - parks, school grounds, street corners, etc. If your school will be participating in the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover, and you would like to receive supplies (gloves and bags), please register online using this link http://intranet/vgk/recyclingSurvey.asp Please consider the following when planning your 20-Minute Toronto Makeover event: A 20-Minute Makeover at its simplest level is a school community (or representation of a school community) setting aside 20 minutes to clean-up the school (inside and/or outside).

If you would like to clean up a local park between April 10th to 20th, please complete the attached Request Form from the City and return it back to Yukiko Pinto of Toronto Parks Forestry and Recreation via e-mail [email protected] or Fax -416-392-8221. Yukiko will put you in touch with your local Park Supervisor to make arrangements. Please indicate the exact name of the park you wish to clean, the number of students and teachers attending, and your preferred clean-up date and time. Individual classes will be accommodated on a first come, first served basis. The number of classes accommodated will be up to the discretion of each Park Supervisor. Note that the deadline for registration is March 9, 2007.

For park clean-ups, Parks and/or Recreation staff will be on-site to provide a pre-clean-up presentation and review safety rules. They will also remove bags of litter and recycling cleaned from parks and will keep sharps containers on hand.

The City of Toronto has provided the TCDSB with gloves and large coloured garbage bags for all participants. By registering with the above link your school will be sent supplies by TCDSB staff.

Participants should bring plastic grocery bags from home for litter collection - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Schools should bring 1-2 recycling containers with them to their clean-up area to collect any recyclable litter -

reduce, reuse, recycle! For park clean-ups, Park Supervisors will supply recycling baskets on-site. Schools must bring a first aid kit with them to their clean-up area, and students should be accompanied by a

staff person trained in First Aid treatment. Students participating in the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover must fill out a Media Release form, as the event

could be covered by local media. Prayer services to be used during Earth Week. In addition, Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation is having a draw to plant a tree. There are 4 large caliper trees available. Schools interested in a tree planting must register for the clean-up by March 9th. Up to four schools will be chosen, one per City district, in a random draw for the tree planting. Note that only those schools that are cleaning a local park are eligible to participate in the tree planting. Participation in events such as these allows students to live the Catholic Graduate Expectation: A Responsible Citizen, as they do their part to help create a clean and beautiful Toronto. This leadership project might be championed by a student leadership team,(i.e. ESP, Smile) an environmental club, the chaplaincy team, a science or social science class or staff and students who are passionate about environmental issues. We would ask that all schools include their caretakers as major partners in this initiative.

For information, please contact Ron Hearn at 416-222-8282, ext. 2177.

15-year-old vaults into gymnastics big-time By Jack Borenstein Monday, February 26, 2007--Town Crier Amanda Bahlibi has been immersed in artistic gymnastics for a little more than half her life. Her eighth place finish, including third on the bars, helped Team Ontario (the only Canadian team competing) finish second at the Kurt Thomas International Invitational Feb.16–18 in Frisco, Tex. Her Texas performance is an indication of the 15-year-old North York native’s potential in the sport, given her young age. An all-round athlete in sports like softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball and cross country, she was named Female Athlete of the Year at St. Antoine Daniel Elementary School. As a 7-year-old at St. Antoine Daniel, her class received a pamphlet one day that would eventually change her athletic focus.

It was from Discovery Gymnastics on Champagne Dr. that Bahlibi took the pamphlet home to her parents, who agreed to explore it. They accompanied her to Discovery’s facilities where she tried all the equipment and spoke with a coach. "I wanted to pursue the sport further, and my parents gave me the go-ahead to join up," says Bahlibi. She started in pre-competitive gymnastics at age 8, and entered Ontario provincial competition for the first time as a 10-year-old after achieving strong performances in a trio of qualifying tournaments. Artistic gymnastics for Bahlibi involves "flexibility, strength, endurance and a sense of balance."

The four elements comprising artistic gymnastics are vault, bar, beam and floor. Vault requires the gymnast to complete two vaults, with the score being the average of the vaults combined with their degree of difficulty. The bar involves swinging, fly-aways and hand stands. Beam is a routine of jumps, dance, acrobatics and a dismount, and floor consists of dance and tumbling lines followed by a series of leaps involving jumps and turns. Her floor exercise routine involves choreographed swing music, which falls in line with Bahlibi’s bounce and spring motions she undertakes while in that mode.

She works out regularly after school and on weekends at Discovery Gymnastics under the tutelage of Lindsey Carrier, her coach for the past five years. "Lindsey is a great coach who has lots of experience as a gymnast," said Bahlibi. "She has great knowledge from her years in competition, and has offered insightful advice and suggestions to improve my form and technique over the years."

Carrier, an eight-year Canadian national gymnast and now head of competitive gymnastics at Discovery, said Bahlibi picked up the sport almost immediately. "Amanda is extremely dedicated and a hard worker," she said. "She knows the program thoroughly, is always motivated and is very easy to coach." Bahlibi’s training regimen begins with a warmup that involves shuttle running from one line to another and conditioning "where you go around to different stations in a circuit, to build up overall strength along the course." She acknowledges her various sports experiences help in terms of "running, agility and overall strength."

Her current gymnastic hero is four-time U.S. artistic gymnastics national champion Anastasia Nastia Liukin. "Nastia has entertaining routines, and always achieves high marks," Bahlibi said. "She has lots of difficult moves, and her landings are always tight and solid."

Bahlibi’s 2007 gymnastic calendar continues to be busy. A week prior to the Texas meet she competed in an Elite Ontario qualifying tournament, where she finished seventh. She will compete in an invitational tournament during the March break, and will contend at the Ontario provincial championship in Caledonia in April. "If I finish in the top four I will qualify for the Eastern Canadian Championship in Saint John, N.B. in May, and that’s my immediate goal," she says. "It’s going to be difficult to go from my current Level 8 to Level 9, the top level in the sport, but I will work and practise hard to achieve that mark." Carrier is hopeful of Bahlibi reaching Level 9 in 2008.

"The beam may be her weakest event, but she has such a positive attitude about everything," Carrier said. "She’s always trying her best to improve and be consistent in all events, every time out, and is just beginning to realize her great potential as a gymnast."

Bahlibi says she doesn’t know the timeline of her gymnastic career, but would like to become a coach down the road. If and when that occurs, new devotees of artistic gymnastics will enjoy the wisdom, the easy candor and demeanour which Bahlibi displays to her teammates and coaches.

Racism: Evil in a six letter word Celine Araujo, 13, Grade 8, T.O. Transfiguration Congregated Gifted Program, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2007 www.brandnewplanet.ca H BRAND NEW PLANET, Toronto Star Black or white. About 30 years ago, that’s how people would’ve seen you. That’s how you would be judged. Black. White. This could have determined things as big as where you lived, went to school and what job you got. Even smaller things like where you sat in the classroom or bus, what books you used and how much you got paid could have been determined by the colour of your skin. Blacks were discriminated against because they spoke differently, lived differently and had different beliefs than the mainstream population. They refused to assimilate and maintained their own unique culture. They were treated like scum throughout most of history. Captured, enslaved, and treated like animals just because their skin was darker than Europeans and Americans. This discrimination, against any race, is called racism. That one little six-letter word has been able to drive people apart and has been the cause of suffering, mistreatment, wars and deaths. Racism is like the flu — it has no cure and constantly changes forms to stay alive. And although we can take shots to help prevent the flu, there are very few treatments for racism. Perhaps the worst place to be in the world in the ’50s and ’60s if you were black, was the southern U.S. Until the 1970s, America largely held racist beliefs. Although slavery had ended hundreds of years ago, people of colour were treated as inferiors. So strong was this hate against the blacks that black children weren’t even allowed to go to school with white children. Being racist or holding any kind of prejudice against any group or belief is similar to living your life with blinders on your eyes. It is like seeing the world in black and white. So, I challenge the entire world, in honour of Black History Month, to rip off your blinders and stop seeing life as having one perspective. I challenge the world to keep your mind open to the unknown. Question everything you know and learn about things you don’t know about. Try looking at life from someone else’s perspective. And although you may think that if one person changes their outlook on life it won’t matter, it can make a difference. What you do can have a positive or negative effect on the people who surround you. Choose to make your influence a positive one and set an example for others to be open-minded and kind to everyone. Open your mind. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find when you don’t see life in just black and white. Make the choice to view it in full colour, in all its glory.

Archbishop Collins visits St. Michael Catholic School

The children and staff of St. Michael Catholic School were honoured by a visit to their school by Archbishop Thomas Collins on Wednesday February 28th. In order to welcome His Grace to his new appointment and to the parish, staff arranged a luncheon with guests including Superintendent Bernice Brand, Trustee Katherine Leblanc-Miller and Father Ed McGovern.

His Grace offered words of encouragement and support to teachers, thanking us for the important role we play in Catholic education. He stressed that beyond any academic need, there is the essential spiritual need to see the individual uniqueness of each child and to help them recognize that they are loved by us and, in turn, by God.

His Grace was later presented with a collection of books from each class; each book including a submission from every student in the school. His warmth, love and ease with children was evident as he spoke to both the crowd and to individual children, thanking them, questioning them and later joining in with songs of praise sung by all the students. Before leaving, His Grace imparted a special blessing to the students and their families.
