MESSAGE FROM

THE INTERIM DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

My dear Colleagues in Catholic Education, Today, I undertake another level of service in Catholic Education. I humbly recognize the degree of trust placed in me to faithfully carry out these duties. A challenging task is made possible because of your commitment and dedication. The work to which we have been called is a noble work - the education of the students entrusted to our care in schools, which draw their vitality from the Gospel Values of Jesus Christ. We are companions on this journey. We trust in the Holy Spirit to light our path. And for those who expect a word in Latin from a former Latin teacher - Adeamus cum fiducia! (Let us go forth with confidence)

Noel P. Martin Interim Director of Education

Mom gives back after surviving near-fatal illness JUSTIN SKINNER North York Mirror Jan. 28, 2005 St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School parent and Breakfast Club co-ordinator Tina Giustizia, at the school Monday, is a survivor of flesh-eating disease.

After being diagnosed with an often-fatal disease and told that she would be unlikely to survive the necessary surgery, North Yorker Tina Giustizia made a promise that she would give back to the community if she was able to pull through. Thankfully for both Giustizia and the students at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School, the operation to rid her of flesh-eating disease was successful. Once she had recovered from the

after-effects and undergone therapy to regain most of the use of her arm, the mother of three made good on her promise, running the breakfast program at St. Isaac Jogues. Giustizia was first diagnosed with the disease in July 2000, when she was suffering from a sore arm. At first, doctors told her it was likely sprained or strained and told her to keep it in a cast. "I knew it wasn't just a strain, but it wasn't until the following day when I had a really bad fever that I knew there was something really wrong," she said. "There was a little redness on my bicep, but most of the damage was inside. I was fortunate to have a doctor who knew what he was looking at." Giustizia went in for surgery quickly once the correct diagnosis was made, with doctors removing the destroyed tissue and the muscle casing from her elbow to her shoulder and across her chest. The surgery came in the nick of time. "When they detected the disease, it was about an inch away from my heart," she said. "When I went in (for surgery), the doctor told my husband I was likely not coming out. It was so much harder for him than for me, because I had a high fever and was not overly aware of what was going on." Flesh-eating disease is among the most painful afflictions known to man, and Giustizia promised that if she survived, she would devote herself to helping others. Though she experiences chronic pain in her arm, it appears normal and she is once again able to use it, a fate that exceeded her doctors' best-case scenario. She began working on the breakfast program at St. Isaac Jogues in October of 2003. "We have a population of 315 kids who come from every imaginable socio-economic and cultural background and a lot of these children would probably not be getting a decent breakfast at home," she said. "We didn't want to label these kids, so we opened it up to the whole school and called it a social club. The children pay 25 cents a day so they get to feel good about paying without feeling beholden to us because of charity." With 80 children turning up regularly to eat a balanced breakfast and take part in games and movie-watching activities, Giustizia and her team of local volunteers work tirelessly from 7 a.m. each school day. "We get in early and start cooking food right away," she said. "I'm fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers. I couldn't do it without them."on the children. "I've seen kids who were disadvantaged who have really blossomed under our eyes," Giustizia said. "The connection between the children and the volunteers is remarkable. I just feel really, really fortunate to have been able to make a difference in so many children's lives." Her own children, all three of whom attend St. Isaac Jogues, and her husband, Andrew Springer, are equally thankful that Giustizia is able to make such a difference after her battle with flesh-eating disease. "The good news about this disease is that the chance of me having a recurrence is virtually nil," she said. "It's a one-shot deal, and it's so rare to even get it once." Giustizia plans on continuing the breakfast program at least as long as her children attend St. Isaac Jogues. In addition to her volunteer work at the school, she has also helped out with a mission in Tanzania and participates regularly in a walk to raise funds and awareness to help combat flesh-eating disease

Titans top lists of OFSAA contenders SAM LASKARIS The Mirror Feb. 2, 2005

Some high school basketball insiders still believe a Scarborough-based side will be one of the favourites at the upcoming provincial championships. Surprisingly though, talk has shifted from the West Hill Warriors - a pre-season favourite to win the Ontario title-to the Mother Teresa Titans. Despite recent struggles, the Warriors remain a serious contender for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) crown, but the Mother Teresa Titans are receiving a lot of attention as well. The Titans are currently sitting atop a couple of lists of the province's top-ranked teams. Thus, Mother Teresa is viewed as a favourite to win the OFSAA senior boys' AAAA tournament, which will run March 7 to 9 in Hamilton. Talk of the Titans increased dramatically after they captured the gold medal at last month's Silver Fox Invitational in Hamilton. Mother Teresa defeated Toronto's Eastern Commerce Saints, OFSAA's three-time defending AAAA champs, 66-59 in the gold-medal game of the Hamilton tourney. Despite the rankings, Titans coach Richard Gallacher doesn't necessarily believe his side is viewed as the overwhelming favourite to win gold at the provincials. "I still think people are saying Eastern Commerce and West Hill are the teams to beat," Gallacher said. And he enjoys the fact his charges did not receive much attention at the start of the season. "I like how we've matured as a team," he said. "And I like how we've flown under the radar for a little bit." Gallacher added there are probably five teams in Toronto alone that would be capable of winning a medal at this year's provincials. This list includes Toronto's Oakwood Collegiate and Etobicoke's Father Henry Carr Crusaders. "This year, more than any other year, there's a lot of parity among the Toronto teams," Gallacher said. And unfortunately, the provincials will not necessarily feature all of Ontario's top squads. That's because only two of the teams in Toronto's public schools circuit - which includes Eastern Commerce, West Hill and Oakwood - will advance to the provincials. And only one entrant from the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association (TDCAA) will move on to OFSAA. The TDCAA features Mother Teresa and Father Henry Carr. "You're really going to have two of the province's top teams out of OFSAA," Gallacher said. "It's a difficult road to get there." The Titans are currently on a break since the school is in its exam period. Mother Teresa, which is sporting a 6-0 regular season mark, will return to action on Feb. 8 with a home contest against Neil McNeil. Mother Teresa Titans are receiving a lot of attention as well. The Titans are currently sitting atop a couple of lists of the province's top-ranked teams.

CLASSROOM SAFETY CHECKLIST

Target: Zero Injuries

Workplace accidents to Board employees are costly in both human and economic terms. The ultimate goal of the occupational health and safety program is zero injuries. An important step in preventing workplace injuries is anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling workplace hazards. Determining RISK or the likelihood of injury is crucial in evaluating hazards. The following classroom safety checklist can assist school staff in preventing accidents:

FIRE SAFETY fire exit and route sign is legible and unobstructed ceilings and exit doors are free of combustible material such as artwork, posters and paper no more than 20% of the total interior wall surface is covered with combustible materials means of egress is not obstructed by classroom furniture, boxes, and equipment

ELECTRICAL electrical equipment has CSA or Electrical Safety Authority approval labels there is a ground pin on the three wire electrical plugs electrical outlets, cover plates and wall switches are secure and undamaged electrical and extension cords are not frayed extension cords are used for temporary purposes only

GENERAL ventilation and heating grills, ducts or radiators are not obstructed by books, furniture, paper, plants or students' clothing workplace clutter is kept to a minimum to prevent fire, trip and pest control problems floor tiles or carpeting is securely fastened to reduce trip hazards audio-visual screens and maps are securely suspended shelves are firmly anchored heavy items are stored on lower shelves windows open easily and stay open according to their design in schools with natural ventilation TV carts have straps to prevent TV's from tipping over asbestos-containing materials are identified and undamaged
