Th 11/28 no class – Thanksgiving BreakT 12/3 Ch. 12 more on NeurogenesisTh 12/5 Ch. 9 The Saga of the Germ LineT 12/10 more on Reproduction quiz on Tues: Draw and Describe pathfinding in any animal CNSTh 12/12 don’t need to read Ch. 13 Growth in class assignment on Thurs: build an Edible Urbilaterian Ancestor you can bring extra ingredients
The Final Exam will be in our regular classroom on Friday, Dec. 20th, 8:00 – 10:00 AM. The exam will cover all the material in the course.
Also remember there are two, short writing assignments, each worth 20 points. Pick any topic in developmental biology (except your term paper topic) and learn more about it. Then write a two page paper and include all the sources you used (those can include any sources including web sites, newspapers, TV, etc). These are due anytime.

1) We learned we can make a reporter gene construct by fusing any gene promoter of interest to the GFP transcription unit. When fused to the insulin promoter, for example, the hybrid gene would be in every cell but only differentiated cells of the pancreas glow.

When fused to the insulin promoter, for example, the hybrid gene would be in every cell but only differentiated cells of the pancreas glow.2) We can use the same construct and kind of flip it’s purpose. The insulin promoter is a “tissue-specific” promoter that let’s us tag a specific cell type.
These are all somatic cells, including the cells that makes estrogenand testosterone. The germline cells make eggs or sperm in responseto whether they are in a testes or ovary (nonautonomous).
9.23 fly gynandromorph
Compare sex determinationin people (vertebrates) (nonautonomous regulated by steroid hormones) to sexdetermination in fruit flies(cell autonomous = each celldecides if it is an male orfemale).

In the nucleus of each of their cells, women have a Barr body.It is one of her two X chromosomes that has been packed awayand isn’t used.
dosage compensation
In the nucleus of each of their cells, women have a Barr body.It is one of her two X chromosomes that has been packed awayand isn’t used.
dosage compensation = Men have just one X and Women effectively have just one X, so the level of gene expressionis the same in men and women.
